Thank you! I was wondering too, if it is a comic or novel adaptation. Hmm, Lu Yao reminds me of the Japanese detective- Kindaichi. He is like what Kindaichi would be when he grows up, haha
Actually the scriptwriters have borrowed quite a bit from Kindaichi Case Files. I recognize the 1st case, the painter's case and the "heavy footprints" in snow bit from Kindaichi Case Files. Even the clock tower murders are familiar, but I'm not sure if this is from Kindaichi or Elementary (a US detective series)
personally i thing that detective L is way more better than this first of all the FL hear sucks i hate hero lot…
Detective L and Miss S, are both more believable than this drama. At least Bai Yu and Gao Weiguang are mature actors who look believable as senior police officers. And the FL..... she look more like an undergrad impersonating as a journalist, sigh
Having just finished watching Miss S, thought to try this drama. Set in similar times in Shanghai, and also a detective series. Following is just my point of view:- - Miss S stays more faithful to the times in Shanghai. From its theme songs, setting and the age of the actors, it is closer to reality. My Roommate is a Detective is targeted for maximum commercial success. A rap song for a drama set in Old Shanghai? The extremely young cast and the bromance is probably included in to ride on the audience love for youth and BL. The most unbelievable is the Bai Youning character. At her age in a news agency in those days, she'd should be pouring tea for seniors and running office errands! - The murder cases in My Roommate are too clever, and we don't get much chance to guess who, why and how! Everything is wrapped up and resolved very quickly.... It is probably better suited to set the drama in modern times? That fast pace is not Old Shanghai-style. YET in spite of my criticisms, I would still continue to watch it. Becos the fast pace and clever murder settings do make for a fun watch.... So I guess the production team is right. We, the audience, are suckers for young actors, a fast plot and stylish old-time settings. LOL
Shouldn't it be for the name of the main lead that appears Yang Zi? Why in cast & credits xiao zhan appear first?
I don't really understand the China's obsession in who got top billing..... If a drama succeeds or fails, it is on the entire production team and cast. Not just 1 actor.
Now they say it's gonna air in 2021... I have no idea whether it's true or not, btw, there's a new preview https://twitter.com/xzhan1005/status/1308252548743208960?s=21
-____- just checking in to check on updates after finishing another cdrama. Next year then, I guess
Thank you for the review, and I completely agree with you that some of the cases are too complicated and twisted.…
Ignore 2nd part of above comment.... Finished the drama and LOVE it!! Ending feels a bit short but due to the urgency of the sequence, it really couldn't have been prolonged (unless they included in flashbacks of Mr Ding and his daughter, which would have been unnecessary). Great detective drama!!
Thank you for the review, and I completely agree with you that some of the cases are too complicated and twisted. Esp the painting murder, that one made no sense at all. But the cases in the 2nd half are better (I'm at ep 24 now), more logical murder reasons. About the songs, I honestly cannot remember any of the English songs that is played so far..... only the ending theme song 窥望 keeps playing in my mind ;)
And er... that you have compared this drama to When a Snail Falls in Love, got me worried. WASFIL has a very, very lousy ending. The mystery big reveal at the end, felt incredulous.... I didn't like it. But I saw a trailer of Miss S, and it hints on some Indiana Jones-type supernatural stuff at the end.... Have to ask, is that true?? I haven't seen the ending, and thinking if I should stop 2, 3 episodes away from the end, so as not to not spoil the whole drama for me
Can I see it on any other platform other than we tv ...I don't have vip membership.
@Wei Li omg!! Thank You ^__^ I have been stuck at another cdrama 旗袍美探 as most of the other free streaming sites had its 2nd half episodes uploaded in very bad condition, and wetv, tencent sold the rights of the cdrama to hbo for overseas...... in short, I was stuck in the middle of a detective case for almost a week!! Chance on your comment and thought to check out pangzitv.com *happy emoji* And this site has it is 1080p too, resolution is very good ^_^
A very simple script and plot detailing Feng Ren's past. I just wish they'd take a few mins to explain the origin and components of the time traveling device/ ritual. If such a a device exist, didn't see it in use in other Novoland dramas? The movie is worth a watch, good cinematography.

Is this poll started by IU fans?? I like IU as an artiste and she is talented, but in terms of looks she is your pretty girl-next-door... no offense meant to anyone please! Just an honest thought
For me, Runyu's character is 1 of the reasons why I stayed on and watch the drama till the end. Tbh, Xu Feng's character did not have much room for growth, resulting in a mostly 1, 2 expressions acting by Deng Lun. While Runyu's pain was heartfelt, those angst scenes by Luo Yunxi were memorable.... I had 2ML syndrome for this drama ^_^ However, I do support that Jinmi and Xu Feng to be together. After everything that they went through, it'd be ridiculous if Jinmi got together with Runyu!
As for whether Runyu's character was a villain, well I've say he was a "grey" character. He had good and bad in him, and at the 1/2 point of the drama, he got weak and let the bad side took over. He did eventually recovered and did his duties to rule the Heavens. He never got married too.... maybe his love was selfish and obsessive, but he was dedicated to his love.
The writer commented that "Runyu does not know what love is". And this is true. He never had proper maternal love and was taught at a young age to be ashamed of who he was. That might also be the reason why he fell in love with Jinmi. The first time that they met, Runyu was at his most vulnerable. Jinmi saw him for what he was and had no fear, no awareness of his position in heavens, and even gave him that cute nickname "little fish fairy". He felt he could be who he was with her. That simplicity and sincerity in Jinmi was what attracted him (imho).
Does anyone know about that "Sleeping Beauty" painting? It is the first image when the ending song start playing.. I really like it and wondering who is the painter, if a duplicate can be bought? Thanks!
wouldn't tencent Video's own platform (wetv) release it subbed?
Nope.... I'm a WeTV subscriber (international ver), and when I search for Miss S, I get only a short BTS video -_- Like what the rest have commented, Tencent sold the rights to HBO for overseas telecast. Hence the uploads you found online do not have subs, as it is meant for China only
Hi Alll..... I just found a cdrama that is in similar detective genre, with a strong and sassy FL. Check out "Miss S" 旗袍美探 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XY73XIoCDY btw, Miss S is the initial of FL's surname
Full drama is available at most free streaming sites but no Eng subs. It has been picked up by HBO asia for October release https://www.instagram.com/p/CE-2kbSAEwM/?igshid=16cfg2g28bi63 so if you have cable subscription, can wait to watch it there.
Just watched 2 episodes and I'm hooked! Oh, best to watch it with tea, served in teapot and small cups ;)
[Rant ahead]As a big fan of both Yang Zi and Xiao Zhan, and having been excited for this drama all year as well,…
Becos both leads are popular, and I think the novel is popular too? (not sure as I haven't read it). Another cdrama that might have exceeded the fan mania is Immortality. Not sure if it has completed production, but everyone is talking about it. Some joker even created a 20min video (with clips from other dramas) and upload it at YouTube claiming it is the 1st episode!!
I really enjoy this drama! A nice feel-good drama with adorable leads :)) Just here to rant on ep 22 and 23. The script writing of FL suspecting ML, that is so unbelievable! FL is a calm character, even if she suddenly suspect ML to have ordered the execution of her family, her character would feel weak or faint, not charge into the room and point sword at ML without demanding explanation first. It is like the writers decided a conflict between ML and FL is required and just wrote this in.... The remains of the burnt house-- it's been 7 years, the wood would have decomposed and fallen down.... And that smoke bomb to escape: how is it possible in the middle of an open ground?? Unless the smoke bomb is a teleport device *facepalm* It is like the writers are a different team now or lost sense of basic logic....
