There is one, Lady Gu, but she's not in the drama. The principle wife is Madam Mei. While Meng Zhenzhen is the first wife who was eliminated by Shen Zaiye. Then Qin Jieyu was imprisoned and killed. Duan Yunxin was killed around the end. Shen Zaiye punished Madam Mei and made Jiang Taohua as his wife.

Like I said before, woman's life was hard in ancient times. In this drama, especially Liu Zhaodi and Zheng Yuenu.
Liu Zhaodi had been thrown away like a bargain chip by her father. She was forced to marry at 18 to a merchant's son. Her life became much worse. Her husband abused her bcos she rejected him while he refused to let her go. She was then sold to a brothel. Her motivation was to survive. Yet she suffered another humiliation.
Zheng Yuenu, is the daughter of prime minister. She was like Zhaodi, bright, cheerful, lovely. However after she married to Si Wen, she had not have a single happy day. Her husband only cares about solving the case of Zhaodi that he rarely went home. Even when she suffered the loss of her baby, when she was lonely, tired, ML was never there.
Everyone in this drama is evil, especially men. That includes Si Wen. He was a coward. He didn't dare to say the truth nor have the courage to do anything. What he needed was status. He let down of Zhaodi, and he felt guilty. Then he let down of Yuenu, and he felt guilty. Everything was too late bcos he focused on the right thing at the wrong time. He is the last boss! He deserves his ending!
I didn't expect this mini drama to be so good! I was hooked! It is eerie, dark, sad, tragic and mysterious. I thought it would be a fantasy romance drama like TDHR, but it is not. The plot twist is good, the plot will keep you wondering what exactly happened.
This drama should be called "Who Killed Liu Zhaodi?" or "The Tragic Life of Liu Zhaodi". This is yet a realistic example of how hard a woman's life during ancient times. They had no freedom, no choices, no way out, could only be passed on from one hand to another, could only accept their fate. Sad, tragic, lonely. A woman's happiness depends on their husbands. Only a few could fight and depend on themselves.
By the end, at the last episode, I was like "YOU DESERVE IT!!" Damn! 😡
I watched the op clip and thought "I've seen this guy (the cousin)." Turned out he was the ugly creepy stalker in SSS. Here he plays yet another ugly creepy stalker. How I wish the cousin was played by Sun Zujun. Although he always gets the role of a jerk, he is handsome and masculine. The actor playing the cousin here looks feminine and frail, just like how he was in SSS. Is that how the cousin is described in the novel?
