What also bothered me was after Hyewon heard the conversation between Dong Woo and Jamie regarding her illness…
Yes, I saw that. Her attention was focused on finding the book. However, episode 8 is already done. That scene was in episode 3 if I'm, not mistaken. In the next episode, she was the one who made a briefing on Son Min Ho where newspaper clippings of the young SMH were presented. After asking her mom about her dad's work on episode 8 (by the way, I made this comment hours after episode 7 was aired), why is it that she did not even bother to look at the pictures (she could have cross-checked with the old newspaper clippings of SMH)?
These were my thoughts when I made my comment after watching episode 7: Why did she not even remember that there was this picture on the book case where there was guy on the picture who was wearing a hanbok? The trademark of SMH is his hanbok which makes him stand out in the picture. And since her father works in a lab, that would make him stand out even more. There aren't a whole lot of pictures on the book case and she should be familiar with the pictures displayed there, not with the details but at least be able to identify what those pictures contained (family picture, picture of father with colleagues, picture when I was young etc.). She knows that the book of SMH is on the book case so that's already a clue that she knows what the contents of the book case. I tried to put myself in the shoes of HW as my father also has a picture with his colleagues (of the same rank) and yes, I do not remember the faces of my late father's colleagues but I remember what they wore (their uniform) and the background. That picture used to be in his office and is not displayed in our house now. Also, why did she not ask her dad if he knew someone who once worked at the White Night Village in say, episode 3 or before asking her mom about it since the scientific community is small? She could just have texted him.
Yes, she is not the smartest in the team with the youngest with Jichan being the worst but she would not have been chosen if not for her dad and I'm guessing the connection of JC to the White Night Village will be shown later. She obviously lacks experience and needs to control her emotions better (and needs further evaluation for being a "nutcase" as per DW's male superior). The same is true with JC. JW's superiors even objected to both their inclusion in the team and I agree with their objection. This is a special taskforce team where people of high qualifications should be included.
No one thought that a culprit would escaped back to police station of all place. They were so focusing on looking…
But what happened after they discovered that he was in the police station? They sent people out which should be. However, it seems as they relied on a physical search as they were not able to trace his tracks further. How come they were not even able to trace where he went when they had a video footage starting with the entrance of Jungwoo and Hyewon in the police station? They are familiar with the layout of the building and could have relatively easily pinpointed the possible direction JW and HW went. A better option was to have made all the cameras go back to the time they entered the police station and and fast forward the playback until they reach the current time. Or just monitor all cameras at current time where a coordination between the physical and camera search was done.
Something that bothered me in the last two episodes:
While they were trying to track down Jungwoo in the CCTV control room after he escaped from the hospital, they ended up exerting physical effort to find him when he was inside the police station. Don't police stations have CCTVs installed?
I guess Hyewon being Dr. Gong's daughter is to show the irony of how fate works, especially if Hyewon goes against…
I agree with you that Kim Seolhyun needs a lot of improvement in her acting. The scene in the latest episode where the CCTV footage of the lawyer setting the fire where she said "what does that mean?" was just lacking. It's like she was expressionless. However, the line she said could have been improved. I just wish her character was written smarter. Also, though I love Nam Goong Min's acting, I still could not see how he fell for her. The show did not show enough scenes for me where they made a connection of sorts. Not even a stolen glance from him (as far as I remember).
On the other hand, the tap on Jamie's upper arm made me feel their connection, partly because of great acting and at the same time, show showed us their past. However, the writing is still problematic as after finding out they were both from the White Night Village, why did they not talk about their powers? Why did they not talk about their past experiences? Also, after the their two teammates found out that Jamie is from the village like it was no big deal as well? I would be intrigued if I found that out about Jamie.
At this point i'm way too invested in this drama (and Jamie lol) to drop it but man did they lose an opportunity…
What also bothered me was after Hyewon heard the conversation between Dong Woo and Jamie regarding her illness and Dongwoo offering to tell her how she was in the past, it's like it was not important at all. Hyewon was always jealous and curious of the connection between Dong Woo and Jamie and the answer was already there but she was like, nothing. I get that they were in a precarious situation but as a detective where quick thinking is required, she could have at least shown a surprised reaction, like "you two go waaayyy back???"
Also, she said that she feels there's more to the case than it seems. Since she knows that Dongwoo came from the White Night Village, she could have started there and even perhaps ask her father about it. I mean, was she not curious about the pictures on the book case?
Just because a drama markets itself as a crime romance doesn't follow that the audiences have to like or accept…
I guess Hyewon being Dr. Gong's daughter is to show the irony of how fate works, especially if Hyewon goes against her father. I would be okay with this if they wrote the romance part better. The drama started with Hyewon acting all possessive towards her boss and even as they showed how the romance started, though not communicated by Jung Woo, I just could not feel it. Love can happen unexpectedly but show failed to make me connect with the emotions they were supposed to be feeling.
YES, but I also want him to break it off with here completely because shes a psycho, also she doesn’t deserve…
I second that. Same with Deokyung. While he exhibited questionable behavior, his death shows that he was just blindly in love with Hyeonchae. This does not excuse him though but at least, he has conscience? Something that Hyeonchae seems to lack.
Am I the only one bothered at how Chef Jang seems to not care about the difficulty of sourcing out the ingredients he uses? Lady Choi , the chef and the guy getting the ingredients all show disapproval/discomfort of his demands but he just dismisses them. I'm hoping that by him being exposed to how life is outside the palace, and that does not mean drinking with women, he will get to understand that easily sourced out ingredients at present were difficult to source out in the past and may have even resulted in people's (slave's) sufferings.
I still don't understand why people hate Bo Ro Na, shouldn't she be one of the good characters?
It's hard for me to sympathize with her as she projects her bitterness about her disadvantaged position towards her mother. It's as if she cannot see how hardworking her mother is. Yes, they are not rich but in no way are they poor. It boggles my mind also why she's prone to believing rumors about her mother without talking to her about those rumors. She's her mother after all. Of course, she will most likely change and show some character growth as the drama progresses but it's been how many episodes already and she's just a very frustrating character. On the other hand, while Eunbyeol is despicable levels, we can see that how she behaves is directly impacted by her mother's parenting style and is already showing signs of having a mental illness.
Thank you for this very insightful review! I hoped show would redeem itself towards the end but the three year time skip, which is a lazy but convenient route, did not help at all.
Although I find the subject matter genuinely fascinating, I think the show isn't quite as cohesive in its juggling…
Same observation with the script. Hye Won’s jealous behaviors does not not really seem realistic given that Jung Woo is her superior and yet she acts as if they have the same rank.
