Everyone's issue with him (in the show) is only about his attachment to ex. All the characters acknowledge that he's a good father and was a decent husband until he decided to go care for his ex.
Nothing he's done has indicated he's a terrible person. He seems to love his child and parents and his parents are only annoyed at him due to his attachment to his ex's family. Even when he'd wanted his dad to use the expensive liquor, he acknowledged his dad didn't want to, and joined in on drinking the less-expensive one.
Seems that once he learns his parents were right about his ex's family, his pride will take a hit and he'll be filled with regret about all that time wasted

The misunderstanding is when he stated he feared he'd let her go and she'd said that she'd return to him (or something of the sort). She meant Rong, he'd meant the FL.
Their issue is that HE knows he's long over Rong, but no-one else does. They interpret everything he says and does as if he's emotionally tied to Rong.
So, he'd thought after dropping her off that night, they would start something.... he was excited... but then she left the country and never contacted him again... and he heard she was studying abroad. For those 2 months she was away, no-one could contact her.
Had he known she was back in the country, he would've tried to pursue her... but we saw how he found out and how Rong made it look like they were together and it seemed like the FL was dating someone else 6 months after basically saying she'd give him another chance.

They made that very clear during the episode. We heard her internal chatter and we saw his face and reactions.
