I am sorry, there are certain criteria for picking academic sources; one of them being the scale of research done and with my extensive research, I haven't found a lot of credible sources that brand this as a genre of it's own.

Hard to say. If it was up to me, horror genre would have only ghost things, but that isnt how it works :) Due to the very violent nature of this game, usually where it appears is tagged as a horror.
