The pace is anything but slow, and saying it's not realistic is a ridiculous complaint because this is a Kdrama…
You can see Somin in my fave actors list so you know I'm not biased. It wasn't as bad as "Lovely Runner" for example, but the cancer plot was 100% nonsense. Overall it's another average romcom nothing more. Haein is also a decent actor, and both carried "LND".
Perfect Crown is the prime example when you have a script from a rookie writer. BWS is not a bad actor but IU is rally good you can see her in My Mister or Tangerines. Hotel del Luna is basically the better version of Perfect Crown because Manwol is cringe sometimes too it's just much better story and well-written character. Here in PC it's just things happen and the characters has barely any depth. Especially the side characters.
IU's characters are only good when she's doing serious things or not acting cringe. So it's not really about the actors. They do what the script and the director asked them to do. Also, IU's character is cringe on purpose to hide her feelings, but I said when I first watched EP1, not many people will like her character. If I hadn't been an IU fan since 2008 I don't think I could tolerate the cringe parts.
Yes, PC is predictable, but we can say this about almost every romcom tbh.
I only want to watch Sold out on You because I really like small town dramas.
I wish you would not assume just because he is popular, he can't act. The reason he got popular is because he…
No, I'm not saying he was bad in other projects; it's just the SCRIPT was lacking.
You can put Meryl Streep or Al Pacino in any Kdrama romcos they won't make it much better. Romcoms are usually simple without much character or story depth. It's the Kdrama world's Marvel Cinematic Universe, basically. It's fun and all, but most of the time it's not everlasting.
Tbh, I don't care about visuals at all, I mean, the visuals of the actors.
There are a lot of pretty/handsome people out there who I wouldn't trust to cook an egg for me. π
A pretty face won't make anyone famous for long.
What you said about "sincerity of a performance" is what I'm looking for. I can see that in his performance in "Perfect Crown" too, even tho I do think the script of that drama is also underwhelming. I hope they won't mess up the last 2 episodes like "Dynamite Kiss" did. Tbf, DK was already a mess before the finale, and PC is still on an average level or so. Not bad, but not good either.
I think they really missed a good opportunity to make an interesting political drama with much better-developed characters. But for a rookie writer, it's not bad.
I wish you would not assume just because he is popular, he can't act. The reason he got popular is because he…
That's not really what I meant to say. I was only talking about his popularity. It's not only about him either. Actors or any kind of entertainers can become popular because of something else, not really because of their talent. That's pretty rare, actually, especially in the acting industry. It usually happens because people love a show or a movie, and they do research about the actor. I'm not downplaying his or anyone else's skills; I always said his company is just wasting his potential in these romcoms, but who cares? I'm sure his actual fans don't mind it. I'm just different. π
For the record, I agree about your 2nd sentence. A bad actor could never make you feel anything other than irritation. π
Also, as much as I disliked "Lovely Runner", acting is more about the script and the director rather than the actors. They're basically the icing on the cake.
I've been a UAENA since 2008, and I can tell you that IU didn't become a top actress overnight either. I didn't like most of her early dramas either. I think it's just critical thinking these days is pretty much dead, and people think if you're a fan, you can only say positive things about your faves.
Now that you mentioned it, "20th Century Girl" is probably his best role. That movie was well-received for sure, but I don't think we can say the same about Namsoon. A lot of people disliked it. Not sure why. I mean, okay, it didn't have 2 strong main leads, but story-wise, it wasn't worse than Bongsoon.
Anyway, excuse my long essay. It's one of my habits. π
I wish you would not assume just because he is popular, he can't act. The reason he got popular is because he…
I don't think he's a crap actor, just your average Kdrama actor, but let's not lie, okay? He didn't become popular because of acting. That's not how Kdrama world works. Barely anyone mentioned his name till "Lovely Runner" even tho he was 10 times better in "Strong Girl". LR was an absolute mess, to say the least.
If Strong Girl proved anything, action and villain roles suit him more than these boring romcoms.
Okay, after 2 episodes I have to say something I never do.
This drama is easily the best drama of 2026 by a mile, and it's not even a contest. They really have to mess this up so I won't give it at least a 9/10.
I feel like this drama is not only made for me, but it was also made about me. Insane.
Also, I'm not surprised it's only an 8.2 rating on MDL. This is not for everyone.
Romcoms are rarely about acting, it's 99% about chemistry and the script. The script was okay till EP6 and has…
I didn't watch Bel Ami either, also Dream High and Producers, mostly because of THAT guy. π
I think the chemistry with BWS wasn't really there in the 1st half. It's better now that both are in love, but that was the point anyway, probably.
I agree, without a good script you can have all the chemistry; only the most hardcore fans will love it. People hate me for saying this but even tho I love "Moon Lovers" and the actors carried that one too, the script was all over the place. Romcoms should forget about the time travel, tbh.
Romcoms are rarely about acting, it's 99% about chemistry and the script. The script was okay till EP6 and has…
Looks like reading is hard for you. You missed the most important part even though you literally quoted my comment in yours.
I'll help you out, I said, "RARELY." Do you know that word?
IU did multiple genres, including romcoms, multiple, for that matter.
Acting is not only about the actors. If the script or the director is bad, they can't do much. Most romcoms are the prime example of that.
I've seen you saying IU's dramas were carried by senior actors, yet IU is one of the few Korean actresses who was a candidate at the CANNES Film Festival with her movie. They don't nominate people just because they're famous.
IU has 4 back-to-back Best Actress nominations at Baeksang and she literally won Best Actress at Blue Dragon last year. And she was a contender for Daesang at Baeksang, but they give it to that cooking show. Even tho the votes were clearly favoring IU. So yeah, if you want to imply that IU isn't a great actress, you're wrong. Not even Baeksang would nominate an actress for the Best category 4 times in a row if they're doing a bad job. I'd agree with you if it were only just the "Popular" category, but it isn't.
If you don't know anything about acting and how it works, you can find actual actors, directors, and scriptwriters telling you on Youtube.
If you put Meryl Streep and Al Pacino in Perfect Crown, they couldn't do a better job because the script is only average at best and it is hard carried by the actors and cute romance scenes just like most romcoms.
Romcoms are rarely about acting, it's 99% about chemistry and the script. The script was okay till EP6 and has…
Well, I basically watched almost all of her work, except the early ones, but other than in "You're The Best" the chemistry was good; it's not bad here either, it's just the characters are lacking depth. Yes, we know they had a sad backstory and now they love each other, but that's all, basically.
Manwol in Del Luna was pretty similar to Huiju. Sometimes badass, smart, and sad past, but sometimes really cringe, but I never felt I wanted to skip a scene. So, it's definitely the writer, because it's not just the leads; every character is lacking the buildup. No character development whatsoever; things just happen because they have to. PM guy and QM's daddy are the prime examples.
Romcoms are rarely about acting, it's 99% about chemistry and the script. The script was okay till EP6 and has…
I agree, and sadly a LOT, or dare I say most romcoms are built the same way because they know most viewers won't complain about the script if the main couple can sell it, and IU and BWS can do that just like many others.
As I noted below, it looks like the queen's father put the fire in motion, but SML set up ML to get burned. He…
Sadly, Perfect Crown falls into the same category as most romcoms. Their main focus is to sell the cute couple; it starts well for a couple of episodes, but the middle part that should be the most important part of any story fails to deliver, so the last couple of episodes will fail too because there's no buildup, no character development at all.
Like do we actually know these characters other than the leads? Why do we have to see QM and her dad's backstory in EP10? Because they need an actuality that the show never had before because the writer doesn't have the balls to let QM take the blame for everything. Even tho she could've been perfect as a villain.
Not surprising at all. IU is the lead; she can carry anything alone even if the script is bang average like PC.…
Tbf, it is written like that so she's doing a good job. Just like SFL, who is a witch who should be burned alive, but that's also amazing acting.
You know what's the difference between QM and Huiju? QM is a 10 times more complex character, and the actress has much more room for acting 'cause her main role isn't just to be in a romance scene with a tall guy.
This is why every scene with Huiju without our dear Prince is so much better, except when she's acting cringe. π€£
Not surprising at all. IU is the lead; she can carry anything alone even if the script is bang average like PC.…
I was searching for your comment like the vacuum cleaner for her mouth, LOL. It kept opening some random review page. π€£
Her acting is good, but sadly her character is lacking just like most characters on this show. People hate me for saying this, but the only interesting characters on this show are QM and PM guy. The rest is either average or worse. And that's not the actors' fault.
When Huiju has a normal or serious scene, you can see her acting skills shine through, but her character is all over the place and not really consistent. I've been her fan since 2008 and that's the only reason I can tolerate Huiju's cringe side.
Tbh, I don't understand why or how this writer won a contest. I wonder about the quality of the other scripts. π I mean, PC is not bad, like really bad, it's just your average romcom drama. It's basically like a Marvel movie. You know it's nothing special, but you know you will enjoy it if you can turn off your brain, and you won't remember it after a couple of hours, let alone rewatch it.
Anyway, long essay again. My point is, actors can rarely be blamed for acting, especially in Kdramas. If the script or the director is lacking, they can't do much. In this case, both are lacking. He directed "Alchemy of Souls" too, and honestly as much as I loved that drama, I don't love it because of the directing or even the script.
I wouldn't say this character suits IU perfectly, but I think Huiju is kind of similar to Manwol in Hotel del Luna. The difference is that Manwol was 10 times more complex. With characters like Huiju you really need a good script and director. I think "Strong Girl Bongson" is a great example. Absolute mess and crazy drama carried by the two leads alone.
IU's suited for realistic or negative (villain) characters. The same can be said about BWS. I've seen him in multiple dramas but his best performance was in "Strong Girl Namsoon". Even in Perfect Crown, the minute he choked QM's dad, that was the only time I actually felt something good about him. I don't get why his agency is pushing him in romcoms. Just wasting his potential.
As I noted below, it looks like the queen's father put the fire in motion, but SML set up ML to get burned. He…
It's not really wishful thinking tho, because him siding with the actual villain doesn't make sense at all. If he wants Huiju, he can't get her by killing the prince.
So, there are only two options here.
1. The writing is absolute shit. 2. He was always plotting with ML because at the end of the day they both want to protect Huiju and the Crown. They already worked together when she was poisoned.
Also, both men know everything about the killers, and neither of them is doing anything.
The writing obviously sucks, especially since EP7 or so, because things just happen randomly without any buildup. Like, everyone thought Jinmu was evil, but only because he's Jinmu. But there was no indication he actually did something bad. He was literally shocked when he found out his daughter is a killer, and now they want to make him look like he forced her into this marriage and it was all his plan. Absolute nonsense.
This is why I wouldn't be surprised if SML were actually a double agent.
He wouldn't just lose Huiju completely; he would lose everything else too.
I Honestly Donβt Understand How Perfect Crown Gets Such High Ratings. Does The Drama Really Deserve That Much…
Not surprising at all. IU is the lead; she can carry anything alone even if the script is bang average like PC.
Lovely Runner was an absolute mess, especially the 2nd half, not to mention the last couple of episodes, and just like most romcoms it was carried by the cutesy scenes. Neither of these nor many other romcoms deserve the hype.
The only difference between PC and LR is that PC doesn't have a complex story that a rookie writer could mess up, like a time-traveling plot. Here, things just happen because, why not? In LR, the writer changed her own rule in every "second."
Tbh, both LR and PC are very similar in multiple ways: both FL are crazy and cringe as hell a lot of times, but at least IU's character is actually smart. Both ML are bland and moody and useless. Also, in both dramas, the SML is more interesting and carries the show.
If you add time traveling and the totally unnecessary crime plot in PC as well, they're basically twins. π€£
Filling for love and My Royal Nemesis i like them much more then Perfect Crown dropped it after 4 episodes. π€£…
Romcoms are rarely about acting, it's 99% about chemistry and the script. The script was okay till EP6 and has gone downhill since. IU's acting is amazing as usual, but the script and her character are not really complex like they were in My Mister or Tangerines or even Del Luna.
She can't do miracles if the script is lacking. I say this as a UAENA since 2008, but without her, no one would care about this drama, and the creators know this. Also, most romcom fans don't care about the story either. They can be swayed with one kiss scene. EP10 is the prime example.
Tbh, PC is not as poorly written as Lovely Runner, and it's also hard-carried by the female actors and them alone, because the male characters are boring as hell.
I knew this was going to happen, but I'm still angry. Without IU, I would've dropped this mess halfway, probably.
Perfect Crown is the prime example when you have a script from a rookie writer. BWS is not a bad actor but IU is rally good you can see her in My Mister or Tangerines. I don't know about MRN and FFL, but WAATH is a totally different series, not a romcom.
