It's certainly aimed at a younger audience, especially those not familiar with the plot of Back to the Future. I am struggling through it as well.

It's a mediocre series but definitely did get better after episode 7. The child actor and JCW really made the series!

Yes you are right. They seem to be in pre-med after the time skip. So the story then takes place through part of Y12 and Y13.
