I'm most looking forward to the scene when the invading army comes to their camp and she kills 3 of their top…
๐ she's okay. She was good in Back From The Brink and in Scent of Time; ignore Love Me, Love My Voice๐คญ. But I'll admit I'm a little worried: she and Ryan Cheng are not the best actors without anyone better to bounce off, as main leads they'll need to pull off their best work to carry the show. But they are both compelling to watch, I'm still most excited and pleased.
The best scene of his "control" over the Princess was him sitting in prison sitting there knowing she would come…
Rumours are hypocritical too. With high ranking persons like Duke Su and Jiang Li people wouldn't spread rumours since it would lead to a equal prestigious relationship and talking smack about Duke Su might put you in trouble. So if you gossip best case is you help Jiang Li get a good marriage, worse case you become Duke Su's enemy. Rumours spread fast when its aimed to ruin someone; so even in the forced marriage arc: there was a scandal until it turned to marriage talks and then it quited down.
I have been writing about SYR and Iโve come back to this conversation numerous times. Through the various times…
He cared more about the public perception; so with her as Jiang Li, there was no stain. Even better in the future he could hold her past against and exploit her further. As long as no one knew, I'm sure he wouldn't have cared.
I have been writing about SYR and Iโve come back to this conversation numerous times. Through the various times…
Even if she wasn't, a woman's reputation is easily lost and with the mindset of that time, a self-righteous scholar like SYR wouldn't be able to stand a wife with a tainted reputation.
In that era, a man and woman alone together was enough to ruin the woman's reputation, let alone undressed in bed under the influence of alcohol. Notice how JL gets really angry with Duke Su when he keeps insinuating a relationship with the criminal in the early episodes because insinuations alone could ruin her chaste reputation. And when she was imprisoned after returning from Hauxiang, the grandmother said there were rumours JL's reputation was no longer pure for being locked up and it would affect all the Jiang daughters. So Ji Shuran, her number 1 hater, had to rush to get her bailed out to save their collective reps.
For an up and coming official luke SYR, a bad reputation of having a tainted wife could ruin his career.
I haven't watched LLG yet, but what's the similarities between these two Dramas?
To claim The Double is "parodying" the historical drama genre is to claim that I Know What You Did Last Summer is a parody or Sin City is a parody of the crime genre. There are running clichรฉs in every genre and different interpretations o the genre. An interpretation with comedy is not necessarily a parody, even when it is really pushing the envelope. For example: The Moulin Rouge is wild and funny different from typical musicals but it is still not a parody!
I haven't watched LLG yet, but what's the similarities between these two Dramas?
Has comedy vs is comedic vs is a parody.
Nigthmare on Elm street is a classic slasher teen horror film with some comedic elements. I Know What You Did Last Summer has quite a bit of comedy and is somewhat lighthearted but still is a teen slasher horror film. Scream is satire of the genre but a true horror film in its own right. Scary movie is a parody. The Double has comedic elements, it is lighthearted and deals with dark themes. It is not a parody.
But seriously: The fl villain falls first for the ml villain The main leads fall mutually and slow-burn deliciously together The 2nd lead couple: male falls first and female follows quickly, all of this done quickly without affecting the pacing or plot of the mains
Ep 22 Princess Wanning to SYR: " You didn't ask why Xue Huaiyuan is alive? Or if we managed to keep our gold mine?..." This clearly shows SYR was well aware and more than likely an advisor/ initatr for their plan to take control of the imperial gold mine and Hauxiang. Their whole interaction in that scene is one of the first expose of SYR's true character. He gave up his home town and father in-law and had an affair for power but he never intended to lose XFF; it's just that Wanning acted out of his control and planning. He exposes his true feelings of not actually being afraid of her for the first time and he's angry that after haven been forced to lose HIS wife, all their plans and HIS contribution of a gold mine will be lost because once again Wanning is messing around by haven kept XHY alive; and instead of dealing with the problem she caused, she's still hyperfocusing on his true feelings, which he seems to believe shouldn't be her business. Afterall, he already killed XFF for her and he would kill JL for her as well, whether or not he loves them should be irrelevant.
Shen Yu Rong and Princess Wanning scenes are just something else. Liang Yong Qi and Li Meng๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐
She's not noble. The father as a magistrate is an official; which automatically puts them in upper middle class.…
Let me add: Xiao Hengโs mother having a low station wouldn't directly affect him because, good marriages wash away any "impurity" of the woman's station as long as she is able to adapt to the new station and the marriage doesn't fall apart. What really affected the children was being "concubine born". Concubine born children are typically not allowed to directly inherit the family titles or court positions. In The Double, Ji Shuran plotted to kill Ye Zhen Zhen (Jiang Li's mother) so she could be raised from a concubine to the main wife. That way her children become legitimate Di offsprings. Jiang Yu'E lived so poorly because her father was a concubine son in the Jiang household, so he doesn't inherit a post and combined with his lack of talent he could not progress in his political career. Compare that with Jiang Li or Xiao Heng with "lower classed" mothers: people might mock them or look down on them but they inherit the high station of their parent.

Marrying below your station doesn't affect the person in actuality. It's just people look down on each other and want to oppress those less privileged, talented or connected than them. In LLTG, as much as Zisheng didn't care and wanted to marry CSS regardless of objections, she still had to undergo training at the palace and still needed time to understand palace politics and such; because her etiquette and skill level and knowledge were lacking. With XFF in The Double, she is talented and skilled so she could be well matched with the best but then the consideration of family comes into play. Her father and family have low positions and do not garner the same level of respect. So by position her father should bow to Duke Su and still bow to a few levels after him. Unlike as Jiang Li, her father and Duke Su would be on same or very close levels.
Using LLTG as example again, by virtue of being Zisheng's fiance, CSS could attend parties that her parents would not be invited such as the Empress' birthday.
With complicated family structures, high public positions or bad in-laws unequal marriages usually cause unnecessary strife and attract trouble. On the other hand, "equal" marriages consolidate power and influence among strong families and help grow their prestige and wealth.

Its a long story:
In the novel, Xiao Hengโs father was an outstanding young general and he fell in love and married the daughter of a prosecuted official that had been exiled. Xiao Hengโs mother was working as a singer in a brothel, so when she got upgraded via marriage it caused a lot of jealousy like the type Shaosheng faced in LLTG after her engagement to Zisheng. The Empress at the time was much younger than the Emperor and was resentful that she married an old man that she shared with other women and then some brothel singer got to marry so well as a sole wife. So she set XH's mother to witness a terrible secret which got her killed and XH's father investigated her death until he also got killed on the trail. The terrible secret was that the Empress was having an affair with the Emperor's younger brother. The Emperor's brother and Xiao Heng were close friends and fought in the army together. He lead him into the trap that would kill him, when the investigation got too close to the truth. The Empress had no living children for the Emperor and adopted the Emperor we see on the show and helped him ascend the throne.
All of this was cut out of the drama and replaced with a simple straightforward "military betrayal plot after a failed coup" plot. And they were able to tie Xiao Hengโs backstory with the rest of the plot in the drama unlike the novel which was an added benefit.

As Fang Fei, a marriage with Duke Su is completely out of her reach and would be terribly scandalous but as Jiang Li (Prestigious Di Daughter of the Right Minister) it's just right. In fact in the novel, Xiao Hengโs father marries similarly well below his birth and that was the catalyst that lead to their deaths.

Duke Su is noble, titled with a dukedom and is probably a 3 or a 2 in the imperial court. (You an guess their level based on where they stand in court and he stands at the very front).
His family is a noble military family and they seem to command a major army like the palace army or the biggest or most elite army or something like that; and they are loyal to the Emperor. Which is why Prince Cheng couldn't succeed in his coup while Xiao Heng's father was alive and didn't make a move till after XH gave away the army tally. He's the right hand of the Emperor and everyone knows the Emperor favours him and he seems to have a special office which allows him meddle across various ministries. His family would be like The Yan's in SOKP or the Huo's in LLTG
Can someone explain me the ending? Did he return or did she imagined it?
You could see it either way but the production team clarified that he returned. They released an extra episodes 40.5 showing a bit of their married life. You can check out the Discussion board for more info.
Heh. For your sanity stop at Episode 40 Minute 31:17
It's almost impossible to watch any drama that is more than 4 years old now. The quality has improved by leaps, so older shows look especially terrible in plot and production by comparison. You had to have been there to enjoy them. So definitely have to be careful with recommendations for older shows๐
Heh. For your sanity stop at Episode 40 Minute 31:17
It's an unnecessary issue in my opinion but I think the storytelling style usually prefers a sad openish endings; so they were being nice by adding the extra episodes indicating a happy ending.
Did you watch LoveO2O: the videogame movie Wei Wei makes, Xiao Nai edits it and adds a sad ending and she loves it even more ๐คท. Sad endings seems to be the preferred ending in China because most shows end sad or unsatisfyingly "atleast they survived".
