It only got recognized as a drug between 1998-2000 ( i guess the fact that the drama is based in 1997 seems deliberate them, implying that they were not necessarily selling drugs). But the crackdown and sentences were serious super serious back them. Also this would take a different turn if chen hui kills someone. thats like minimum 10 years or immediate life sentense depending on how far he goes

This is a tencent X theatre project. X theatre is a special tencent production house that produces realistic serious dramas on various genres. Their priority is the script, acting, directing. XK received this project from the director himself. This drama hardly has YZ influence. In this drama, everyone in this small town has their own agenda. From the main characters to the side characters everyone has their own motives. This focuses on human nature. There are multiple villians, each of them having different reasons to become villians. And the degree of how bad they are, is also different. Even the good people in this town have significant flows. Everyone has their own secrets which led to the unsafe nature. The drama touches on many realistic points that were prevalent in 1990s in china- the cough medicine was apparently a huge thing in guangzhou, mining marriages, police salary, cost of healthcare, investigation methods and many more. Even if this project went to a different actor with strong capital backing- they would not be able to change the script. If they did add scenes, that would disrupt the pace/flow of the plot which will make it so jarring. The script is very tight, fast paced, zero filter, filled with metaphors, foreshadowing etc. The bird's eye view of the plot not only makes the show super thrilling, but it also manages to keep the suspence, perfectly balancing the two (its like a person watching down the earth from a hot air balloon, seeing everything unfolding, but not being able to do anything to stop the bad stuff from happening). XK himself cherishes this drama and he had a blast filming with veterans (a truly rare opportunity for a young actor). He's the first 1995-1999 born actor to lead an x theater project
