I would argue your version would make it less of a tragedy,

It is inevitable that JL die here to resolve the drought, he does not want to kill Jiu Ying.... because that would literally kill Wuyi.

Ji Ling will not choose to not sacrifice himself, while Wuyi refused to give up at the cost of her own life.

We as the audience know this, it almost feel like it unavoidable and it is. Wuyi action here wont change JL fate.
