I will try to watch anything Zhang Yimou makes, and his experience and talent shows with his work, it's very easy to overhype gang war scenes with unrealistic violence, make lab filled with gadgets and design unrealistic cases. but realism and era accuracy show in his work, like how he portrayed poor policemen doing best with what they got there and covering up "f" ups of their teammates and enemies adapting and changing their strategies. I know how to explain this phenomenon in words, consistent quality and polished screenplay shows, this guy knows what he is doing !
Although Empress Dowager is running a country but damnn, that woman is ruthless nonetheless. She could have given fief to ML, increased his title to Marquis or duke, made him county prince or something else.... but nope she has to listen to her favourite daughter and force her granddaughter on ML. People seem to forget first time around; it was his plan to abduct FL and Chu Ti party was also planning to abduct here (her life was in no danger), then he feed her the strong alcohol which activated the poison and almost killed her, then he made up for his mistake by saving her with cold water. People forget he was threatening ML with her life, at the end he didn't save her out of free will. He knew if she dies, ML will annihilate his kingdom. Now this time around, seriously what he did apart from stupidly attacking the convoy, instead of INFORMING THE ML OR HIS GUARDS, then getting caught and rolling on floor, in the end when he knew for a fact ML is attacking the ship and if she dies, ML will kill his sister. He saved her from his own trash sister, without ML attacking with his army...FL WAS DEAD for sure and there was nothing SML could do.
First he forcibly abducts her and keeps her there, even when she demanded freedom. Now he forcefully saved donated the skin.... WHICH IF ML WAS PRESENT, HE WOULD HAVE HAPPILY DONATED HIS SKIN TOO. The point I am trying to make here is, ML never forces FL against her will and always ask her consent. That's the difference between two and why she likes ML, he treats her as equal and can save her but SML can't even control his own sister. FL ain't some beautiful jade or someone's property, she is living and breathing human being with her own FREE WILL to be with. Whom she likes !
