That whole meal table sequence is just so precious. I was killing myself laughing. The reactions of everyone is absolutely priceless. I don't know what's more scary -- friendly Ling Buyi or stern Ling Buyi. And grandma... I could have died on the spot.
This is the funniest show I've seen in a really long time.
Even female writers seem to vomit up this mysognistic trope with tedious regularity.
I don't know what they're thinking to be honest. But I don't find beating up the male lead with regularity a sign of female strength. Nor is it all that funny.
Her entire presence in the narrative is superfluous. Apart from the fact that she's obviously set up as the love…
Yeah, by having a much smarter villain for starters. But it's just easier to make him a powerful and/or rich guy with plenty of resources at his disposal. Just guessing of course.
But this FL is definitely in competition with the one in Catch the Ghost for unbearable. That one really tested my limits for a while. Thankfully there was Kim Seon-ho to take the edge of things.
I would enjoy this drama so much if the FL didn't exist. Not hating on the actress but her character is so infuriating,…
Her entire presence in the narrative is superfluous. Apart from the fact that she's obviously set up as the love interest, her removal from the narrative wouldn't make much of difference. Basically she's just there to put the breaks on the plot.
Eps 10 now. The romance story seems a little slow but no complaints I am enjoying the ride. What I do like about…
The way the director frames and shoots his scenes speaks volumes. This is another instance of how good the storytelling is here. Every single one of Ling Buyi's action scenes (but especially Episode 12) directs the audience to his military might by showcasing his efficiency, ruthlessness and prowess at an almost inhuman level. It's terrifying how good he is in the halberd scene. The scene at the pagoda for instance demonstrates that he's not just some knight in shining armour saving his lady love -- he's on another level entirely.
This would be a much better show if Han Jae Hee's character weren't part of the equation. She's really unprofessional and emotionally driven. I don't know why K dramas still feel the need to have these sorts of characters in their shows. She's written almost entirely to be an obstructionist but is nowhere as interesting as a villain. I'm reminded of Detective Fix from Around the World in Eighty Days who was equally exasperating.
After much anticipation, and reading such rave reviews, I finally started this. I must say I’m SORELY DISAPPOINTED…
Those early episodes are absolutely foundational to the entire structure of this story. The ramifications of what occurs in them reverberates right through even to the most recent episodes. It isn't just family drama. It is a blistering critique of the world the adults have made through the eyes of a child. It's downright hilarious.
Just starting with episode 4 right now but I can tell that the writer and or director of this show operates at…
I loved the first four episodes and rewatched them with my family the last two nights. The family theatre is so tragically funny. The emotional blackmail is so relatable and brought back so many memories.
The writer of script has a very good insight to human nature. There are nuances that each character has that give…
I would agree with that. It's one of the reasons why I like the storytelling too. It's a joy to watch characters that are multidimensional and have layers especially in historical/palace dramas where there's always much more than meets the eye. Here the male and female characters are well-written. There's no denigration of one sex over the other for reasons of performative activism.
My thoughts on Episodes 23 and 24 can be found under spoiler tags in the next tier.
I really want to give the director his due for the way he staged the proposal scene and really everything else he does for this production because this is an artist who understands television storytelling. In contrast to a certain other recent popular adaptation that will remain nameless, this adaptation is done with a thorough understanding of the visual medium. His execution of a very good script is really one of the best I've ever seen. A lot of C dramas adapt novels like they're rewriting the novel but this one actually does a good job of using the camera to tell the story rather than using dialogue or lengthy exposition to overload the screen with unnecessary information.

Every episode is just too short.
