Does the concept of balance exist in dramas? Ep 8 I try to take your bottle of water but I lose my balance and…
Nope. In Dramaland love automatically makes FLs forget how feet work. The good thing is that the same substance makes the MLs automatically be able to catch the FL no matter where or how she trips.
Well, that ended. I know it’s make-believe and meant to be escapist fun, but there are many who have done it better and with less of a budget. This drama had its moments of charm but it was largely an illogical mess of a story that was a meh rom-com (not enough time/ chemistry to develop a believable CP), a nonsensical detective thriller, an unfunny farcical play and a build-up of an antihero that lead to nothing.
The writing for this drama began to deteriorate by episode 4 and it gathered downward momentum from “this part is inconsistent but fixable” to “how will they fix this?” to “so, that’s a dumpster fire” to “people were paid to write that?!?” My heart goes out to the talented and great looking actors who signed a contract and could not get out of this— you should have risked the lawsuit (and fired whoever gave you that script). I look forward to seeing some of these faces in better dramas.
There will be NOOOOO liking ZZ in the Xie household. Zero! 🤣🤣
Nawww… it’s just that walking will be much harder in that household if you “choose” to fanboy ZZ 😈😈. Little Sis figured it out quick too (she’s a Xie!)
Xue Shu being sentenced to death and the Eunuch smiling while carrying out the edict has to be the most morbidly…
IKR? I had hoped it would be poisoned green tea… because I’m petty like that. The real shame was that her punchable-face brother didn’t become YL’s swords pincushion and lived to be carried away from the city.
So they released all eps for VIPs at 11 pm and I watched all of them until 4 a.m.— totally worth it. This was…
And a happy ending that was not rushed! Our FL went through her ¨harem¨of choices and ended up with the best mate for herself and the writers very nicely tied any loose story strings. I was thrilled to see that love did not change XW from a master plotter to a “nice guy.” He became a master plotter in love… and was petty and jealous as hell. When his own son started fanboying for ZZ, he gets tripped and kicked because no one in the Xie household is allowed to love ZZ 🤣🤣. Those twins better be master plotters else their parents will be disappointed.
So they released all eps for VIPs at 11 pm and I watched all of them until 4 a.m.— totally worth it. This was a well plotted and well acted drama that will go in my list of faves. Just chef’s kiss! I’m now here for the comments!
I'm seriously considering writing a fic giving this show the enemies to lovers that it should have. I don't know…
These beautiful creatures given crappy scripts is the reason fanfic exists! I say get your AO3 on and write about our girl romancing our hottie yet occasionally psychotic CEO with a drug-dependency issue until she turns antihero… or until one of them smashes furniture and/or bones or all 😍😍
Obviously any drama premised on a FL strong enough to stop a speeding airplane with her body weight alone is asking the viewers to suspend disbelief from the getco. I bought into the premise and enjoyed the first 3 eps of a fish-out-water story with strong rom com intentions.
Then it wasn’t. The writers (I think) intended to have a fun, light police work -fantasy-rom com drama… but sadly, the execution is very very far from the vision. This drama’s writing is muddled and the plotting illogical; it blends tropes and story styles , just not well. As viewers we ask, what am I watching? is this a fantasy? superhero story? family drama? farcical comedy? rom com? detective story? story of female empowerment? The writers seem to want to answer “sure! all of the above”— but don’t quite know how to deliver on that. It feels like this was written by execs throwing darts at a story board (or Shakespeare-writing monkeys given new typewriters?)
The criticism in most in this feed is very valid: most characters are 2D and cartoonishly undeveloped… with the exception of the main antagonist; we get his backstory, motivation, desires and arc… and he’s a tall glass of smoking-hot water for us thirsty dames (toxic water, but water nevertheless). Kudos to his agency for ensuring their actor will get better future roles!
The other cast members need to fire their agencies for doing them a disservice. The Fl (a much better actress than this role portrays) speaks with wide eyes, exaggerated expressions and her one “thing” is that she is abnormally strong and speaks informally to everyone…and the ML is a cute, earnest, puppy-eyed cop (that’s it, that’s the characters… it’s how they start and where they are in ep 14). The CP spend little to no time together but are somehow in love? The How? When? Why? are not important. Then the story spends a large chunk of time on side characters (mother, grandmother both strong women)…. who are maybe co-lead characters? (If so, why not call this drama “Strong Hwang Women ”?) etc. etc.
Ultimately, this is a mess of a drama with some charm. Watch with little to no expectations or desire to follow logical storyline norms and you may enjoy the silliness and the good-looking people. I’m not hate-watching as much as rubbernecking at a wreck— how is this all going to end? My overall feeling is that I can’t wait to watch these actors in a better written drama (hopefully after they fire their agents for handing them this script).
I just finished and I’m sitting with my feelings now. Whoa! This was dark, gritty and ultimately heartbreaking.
Would I recommend it? yes, but you have to be in the headspace for it. This is definitely NOT a rom-com or “Healer— 10 years later.” This is cop noir done well. The acting by the entire cast was excellent, the pace great, the writing mostly good (I say mostly because as an undercover cop large chunks of the evidence he obtained will probably be challenged in court and dismissed due to his conduct) and the production was highly cinematic.
As much as I tried, I could not really binge this series because my emotions were too involved. The other observation I had is that instead of Subway, this drama had to be sponsored by cigarette manufacturers— 98% of the characters smoked and most scenes had someone lighting a cigarette and exhaling smoke. Heavy heavy smoking. I mean if the meth didn’t kill them, the lung cancer and second-hand smoke would certainly finish off lots of characters.
Finally, the title itself begs the question: what and who is the worst evil? is it the “bad guy” violent meth dealer who comes from a broken home and is using drugs as the ladder to upward mobility… or is the “good guys” married undercover police officers who are supposedly upholding law and order but end up using lies and emotional manipulation to earn the trust (and break the hearts) of people in the name of carrying out an investigation?
This drama crept up on me and latched on. Now I cannot wait until the next episode! The acting is great, the story thus far is well developed. It does not have the biggest budget or production value but it does a lot with what it has. If you are wondering whether you should watch, then yes, I would recommend. I have not hit the fast forward button once in 17 episodes.
The premise is also pretty interesting: what happens if a traditional scheming 2FL character stops her behavior? If there is no foil to highlight a “heroine” good points? The answer is that the traditional heroic ML and plucky FL are boring and flawed. By forcing her husband and his concubine to act rather than react, HQ highlights how silly her husband’s experience of love towards a woman he barely knows is because “she was nice to me one afternoon when I was 6… and then I saw her again 10 years later when she fell from a tree.” It also shows that the “heroine” is not just plucky and brave but just as manipulative as a 2Fl character would be.
So far the pacing is uneven and the story drags in places. ML is doing a decent job of second generation business man trying to improve a clinic as an incubator project. However, FL’s tendency to do idiotic things that makes her need saving begins to grate by episode 11.
KarLuo, the fluffy white Samoyed is the true star thus far. I’m enjoying this as an extended dog/cat video with beautiful animals and then some actors butting in. This is the drama to watch while waiting for other dramas to air… or folding laundry. I’m also getting a kick out of all the pedigree, obviously pampered, pets acting as strays (anyone who’s rescued dogs and cats knows that matted fur, ear/eye gunk, gnarled nails, infection, fleas and patchy skin are “good” rescues (because these problems can be fixed)). These blue point Persians, Ragdolls, Scottish folds, Manx and other high end breeds that are beautifully groomed and well fed are sooo sooo far from being strays—- it reminds me of when movies make gorgeous actresses wear glasses and a pony tail so that they’re “ugly” 🤣🤣
I've watched 14 episodes and I've really enjoyed it. Going by the comments it falls apart at some point? Which…
it’s funny and creative up until episode 17-18. I think original writer had a 24 ep arc in mind but producers needed to put their favor-hires in somewhere…so 10+ eps were written (by a different writer?) and jammed unto original story. I’m up to ep 28 and I think I’m now just watching to see how this mess will end (drama wreck rubbernecking?)
mmmkay… so, someone kidnapped the writer of episodes 1-18, used the Art of Starshift to suck the creativity and fun of those episodes…and what we have left is whatever this story is.
