My take is she grew up with no love from her parents, even though her grandma was there, there as was a period she lived with her parents and she was virtually invisible to them, they never put her first, no one cared even on her birthday. She is actually emotionally damaged.
Yes she can be robotic at times to disassociate and regulate her emotions, you can feel the wheels turning in her head while she looks for a calm and collected response to a situation, because her experience of truly saying how she feels, her father slapped her and didn’t care. When she asked her father, why he always proves to her he doesn’t love her, he didn’t care . Your kid is also asking you to love her, and to go to college -not to take drugs and that’s your response!
A man like ML can easily prey on someone like her, by giving her some love, easing her burdens and appearing to put her first. All she ever wanted from ML is love not social climbing. She still works very hard for all she has and tries not to use any privileges that he tries to give her. Unfortunately his parents have all these requirements, so she lied to keep this love. Just a response to your last paragraph, just my personal opinion lol. To have a satisfactory sister relationship, I would like to see QL acknowledge what XY went through. It would be nice to see her being an actual older sister who is supportive, not self righteous or self absorbed and doesn’t need bailing out all the time. Despite her ignorance of the situation XY is always there to help her, it would be nice to see an equal relationship. A give and take, not just XY always being burdened with this relationship.
As nerve racking as episode 8 was, I really enjoyed the bonding between XY and the old lady. “You helped me catch a thief” 😂💀 I also like how both leads support each other without the other even knowing. I can’t wait for their real real relationship era!
XY is a better person than me, I would cut the whole family off completely off no money, no contact, nothing. Of course I am not including the grandma in this. What right does the sister's ex boyfriend have to blame XY for his girlfriend's actions and even physically assaulting her. The sister brings problems, last time it was the parents now her ex, and she doesn't even see how her actions impact XY and doesn't see how much pain XY has grown up with. ML gets some points from me today for dealing with that guy, don't blame XY for trying to keep this "love", someone who is actually helping her.

So far they are not fighting for the same thing, FL decided to break away from the family. The parents always favored the older sister. They forgot about FL when there was gas leak in house, at hospital only tended to her sister, they didn’t even want her to continue school even though her grades were better than her sister’s. They completely forgot her birthday one time while dealing with her sister. The sister seems to not acknowledge the bias. FL’s way of coping is just live a separate life and sister doesn’t seem to understand why. Annoying as she is an older sister, how can you not see the mistreatment and expect your younger sister to act like they are good parents. Looks like parents even paid for the older sister to retake exams multiple times she failed, why not offer for your younger sister to be supported. The parents also seem to like to blame FL when older sister makes what they deem a bad decision.
