So far, I am enjoying this drama really, really well! But I need to drop a quick commentary regarding the ML going to the emperor to get a decree to marry the FL.
Before anyone comes for me, this doesn't mean I hate him. I know people love to say "that's how things were done in that era," but that doesn't mean we can't analyze it with critical eyes today. And please, don't confuse this with traditional arranged marriages set up by parents—this is completely different. With family arrangements, everyone understands the social expectations, but a guy unilaterally using absolute power to secure an unchallengeable royal order over a girl’s head is a whole different level of personal force.
I know a lot of fans argue that he did it out of protection, and while safety may have played a part, a huge portion of it was driven by pure selfishness. He wanted her, he wanted to ensure no one else stood a chance, and he wanted her regardless of what she actually thought or felt. They hadn't even established mutual affection yet! Even if your intentions are partly protective, making a life-altering decision for someone without getting their consent first is wrong. Going over her head to secure an inescapable imperial decree completely takes away her choice and guarantees he gets what he wants.
I'm accepting it because it's a historical drama, but in modern times, forcing an inescapable union on someone without consent is completely toxic and boundary-crossing.
