Yeah, I have been thinking about 1Q84, too, but I don't remember it too well. It's just, while reading it for the first time, the depiction of a cult did not struck me as sth very similar to Aum. I think that Murakakmi did not want to make overt references to it in his trilogy (but it maybe have served as a source of inspiration).

I believe the law was changed in Japan in such a way that each cult which is breaking the law is under surveillance. Aleph and The Circle or Light are stll being monitored. The Japanese government tried to ban Aleph in the early 90s but they failed during the voting.

Indeed, @pattan001. You're right. The problem with Aum is that many of its members are in denial or just can't comprehend that their leader did sth like that.
