But at the same time, OMG... how is HyunWoo not suicidal at this point?! They're basically making him slave away…
Sometimes people can be shockingly resilient, especially when others depend on them. :) There's definitely more to this timid son-in-law than meets the eye. He's not just a smart lawyer with a pretty face. Looking forward to seeing what they do with him! π
The only thing that caught me off guard was the ML being happy when he heard about FL's condition. Maybe he didn't…
Pretty sure it won't last; it's just his initial response. He's currently so miserable he can't see past his own pain to really take in what this means. Don't worry, he'll come around. π
I appreciate how I can instantly know that the leads don't end up together just based on the recommendations... π frustratingly unexpected, sad-ending bullet, dodged.
After Mr. Sunshine I will never watch a Kdrama without having an almost certain knowledge of the type of ending I'm getting into. The aftermath was too depressing. π
I agree that they are changing up the tropes and cliches we're used to, but flawed characters (with "human frailties")…
Yes, it is! But at least they're both messed up, cause this is more how actual relationships work. It takes two to make a happy marriage. βΊοΈ And also, periods where both spouses loathe each other is just a phase at some point in every marriage; the really sweet times come when you push past them because every human has their blind spots and weaknesses and issues.
It also gives plenty of fodder for growth, which is fun to watch. However, I'm still a bit scared to watch this in case the end falls apart cause they run out of content or it has an ambiguous ending. This is a full-length drama with very long episodes. This model has worked with some dramas (like Reply 1988 or Rebel: Thief Who Stole The People), but it's really hard to maintain... I'm hoping our amazing screenwriter and Kim Soo Hyun's spot-on script selection (he never seems to pick flops, either because he makes them classics or because he has a good eye for ones that will land π€·ββοΈ) can be trusted! π€

Yes, I see what you mean. Or the ML SEEMS like a bad guy but he's really just misunderstood. I think most Kdramas lean heavily into the "misunderstood" part and make the actual growth piece more subtle and slow. So yes, I get what distinction you're making; what we're seeing here is a bit different from the "flawed" shown in most mainstream Kdramas.
I felt cloy was all classic cliche and trope...But it was done right with charmI feel this will be no difference…
Yes, agree about CLOY! And while Legend Of the Blue Sea wasn't perfect, it was also super charming and cozy. Both CLOY and LOTBS I remember because of how I FELT watching them, and they gave me some of the coziest Kdrama watching experiences I can think of.
Tbh, I feel like I can see a part of the plot coming. Like, he will continue to be nice to her to be in her will…
In my opinion, the best Kdramas are a variation on an established theme. π This drama has already done some new things with the story and how it's framed, so you might be right that it's a recycled story from Kdramaland that gets a facelift and a fresh, new look. π
They've already teased this by having all the tropes of the daughter-in-law of the rich chaebol family reversed here (which has been done over and over again, but never quite like this). It holds great promise, I think!
π But when is there not? A Kdrama rom-com with no love triangle is a rare specimen. In my experience, you've got to go into Kdrama rom-coms expecting love triangles, and then just be pleasantly surprised when they don't happen. π
This is a pretty daring drama in some respects. For a drama that is pitched as a romance, to set its 2 main leads…
I agree that they are changing up the tropes and cliches we're used to, but flawed characters (with "human frailties") are often featured in Kdramas. It's one of the things I love about them; I love the way many build a character's arc over the 12-16 eposodes. Maybe BOTH leads being this flawed is less common, but it's certainly more common in the family/makjang dramas (which this seems to be leaning into heavily; I liked virtually no one in My Father Is Strange until quite a ways into the drama). It's certainly different than how this screenwriter normally writes, too, so I'm curious to see how it progresses. I've always thought one of her writing strengths was creating many likable characters who you can root for that feel very cozy together. So, this could be a really fun journey or, it could fall flat cause she's venturing too far out of her writing sweet spot. Time will tell, I suppose!
Don't usually like the drunk scenes (every Kdrama has them) but this one genuinely made me howl. "I'm too cute!" And he was so sad about it. π€£ Also, the part where he mentions how he already has a ride home and his friend is puzzled as to how that's possible ("Do you want me to prove it?"), then Hyun Woo mournfully shows how two guys are shadowing him 24/7 so he can't create a scandal. That's when I died.
Before starting this, I wanted to know is it will be a tragic ending/sad ending? Knowing that the fl has some…
This screenwriter has more of a track record with open or ambiguous endings (CLOY, MLFAS) than sad endings, I'd say. I'm hoping for something like Legend Of The Blue Sea as far as endings go. π€
yess the actress said that she'll die within the 3-4months period, and she's looking full mommy material btw
I don't think we know enough to really know if it's a lie or the truth that she's terminally ill. It could be a way for her to get him to stay with her, because I bet she's heard rumors about him wanting a divorce. We definitely need more of her perspective.
