I have rewatched this for the fourth time and the scene that always hits me hardest is when Gaipa reveals that…
That was so powerful. Much sympathy for your losses. I love how they use the theme at her funeral, when it begins with Khaotung singing as Gaipa, then shifts into a pared down solo Khaotung version, and then moves into the big theme version. The moment when Earth's voice and the instruments come in after Khaotung's feels like the warmest hug.
No need, it's on youtube. Probably best to avoid the link they've posted, could be phishing or one of those that monetise stolen content with ads carrying malware.
Sometimes endearing comedy with a kitchen sink plot of several people's stories touched on before it dances away again. It's over full but does tie things together and is ultimately heartfelt.
Melodrama that's also very real - anti-war and proto-feminist - from the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema, over-flowing with both love and sorrow. Nothing is wasted here, the beauty of the island, the use of music, Takamine Hideko, the children, oh these precious children, it all comes together to make a powerful piece.
We're adding them as we watch them. I saw My Broken Mariko yesterday morning and it's going to be near the top…
Yay :) What is it showing for you? It's broken for me. (Says 0 points from 0 voters) My Broken Mariko *should* show just under 200 points from 2 voters. (99 points from me + yours)
We're adding them as we watch them. I saw My Broken Mariko yesterday morning and it's going to be near the top for me (probably 2nd). Which means re-doing my votes from almost the start. I've started Twenty-Four Eyes and since I expect that to also rank high, I'm just going to add them in together today or tomorrow. You can add it yourself in the top right corner. That's also where you can delete and recast your votes if you see more and want to change your order.

This was the simplest of the four JFF horror shorts but my favourite, second only to the longer KARAKASA. It won the New Hope Award at the 1st Japan Horror Film Competition for the possibility of pioneering a new genre. Director Nakano Hiroto has a bright future ahead of him.
