They have really overdone it with the costumes and effects here. The endless succession of walking and talking decorated xmas trees is hilarious at first but becomes tiring soon, same with those flickering magic lights. But the themes drowned in there are serious, the two ML's perform great and the ending actually works for me.
Very good acting and apt commentary on the stupidity of cold war confrontation, from the korean perspective (who did not separate on their own but were forced to by greater powers).
But what about the african perspective?? Looting and killing black people are (ab)used to provide an exotic background for the plight of some privileged rich asian embassy staff trying to keep their precious lives during civil riots and, thanks goodness, manage to get by in the end. Now why is there a civil war in Somalia costing so many lives of mostly poor people? Who was that president and why did he get ousted? No real effort to provide some background is made in this movie (hint: colonial politics of the powers in the north).
This blatant disregard leaves me speechless.
Still 5/10 because the korean side was delivered so well.
Granpa Jackie showing the audience that dabbling into criminal activities will lead to no good ending. Audience already suspects this and his fans might even enjoy the tale.

Though those butterflies are the main theme, in reality it is about spiders. Especially the costume of the young girl in the end, black with red dots, has a strong black widow vibe.
This is really a slow burner, the first four episodes are just a prelude. Contrary to a review above I think the last episode is great, a sound trashing of the modern art scene and it's pretentiousness.
I liked this very much in spite of the many implausible aspects. The portrayal of the autistic character was done well. The senior character's switching between aloof coolness and motherly caring was less convincing, especially the platonic bias. Like, this are two very good looking cuties but except for hiking together and some occasional cuddling no hormonal drives seem to exist?
The major achievement is the ideal relationship they manage to create and maintain in their respective circumstances. Embedded in natural scenery wholesome sanity envelopes their personalities so that they can mutually heal their respective vulnerabilities. Not realistic but still convincingly delivered (if one can bear the slow pace).
This was just perfect until the unconvincing ending. Still a great piece and so much better than most other gangster flicks. I'm deeply moved and recommend anyone to not miss this one.
Stunning visuals and great action choreography. The plot is straightforward if not predictable, the message simple but convincingly delivered. The elements making up the hero's character don't mix well making it difficult to sympathize.
This is not so much about history (geopolitical background of the division of Korea is missing) but a spy thriller with historical backdrop. Very well executed in all departments, enjoyable and recommendable.
How is the rating so low? This is so well executed in every department, I can't find a flaw. Apparently some people expect to find a "good guy" to follow but this is clearly political realism, so it will naturally turn into a drama with no winners, let alone righteous ones. Nothing can be right within a wrong system, but there can be artwork telling how and why it is as it is. I'm glad to have been educated and in such a captivating manner at that.
This show did a pretty good job of explaining it, but not in a very sensible way. The vampire thinks it’s worth…
Yep, it makes no sense. Same with the dead / undead distinction. If there is an awareness going on, there is life happening, no matter if it contains heartbeat and blood circulation or not. This comes from the age old confusion about the soul being different from the body, so it could be seperated and become a ghost while also the body could continue as a Zombie. But If the Zombie has an awareness, even a primitive one craving for meat only, it would be another soul already. Personally I think life is an undivisible oneness with soul and body being two different and incomplete angles to look at it, but religious folks and fantasy fans won't agree which is ok. Maybe in the last episode the dude will realize that he was human and able to love all along? I've just finished the first ep and don't know yet if I will stay till the end . . .

Always trying to get above the stupid bloody revenge level but failing in the end.

This deserves better ratings.

Performance quality varies, but the story holds.
Highly recommended!

There are some plot holes, but the dark mood and the consequential development are convincing.
