Her friendship with her roommate where she has to witness her friend die in front of her. FL really love study, because she is an orphan and poor in the first life she really only has eyes and time on study. But people around her just can't leave her alone. The only similiarty between novel and drama is Lin Zhihua role as her supporter. When people make trouble for her, ML teach her how to deal with them. So she only need to focus on study. That's why for FL, Lin Zhihua is a mentor. In novel you will find the villaon get their karma so it feels more satisfied if you dislike annoying character.
But drama strenght is more fluffy and the chemistry for their romance is top notch. Make sense. How can novel Lin Zhihua can make fluffy story where their interaction is mostly by Wechat (only online communication).

Ah I wrote wrong. 9 episode. You are right I only recently take interest on his project. I will detailed my answer honesly. My first time I watch and finish his drama is As beautiful as you because I like FL acting and the story quite good. And then I try his famous one "falling into your smile", dropped it because the story is not my style and the acting still feel too stiff. And then Best Choice Ever, this is more like "yeah let's try again don't give up thing" , but the mother character is giving me blood pressure its so unbearable too watch so I dropped it. And the millitary one, I am not interest on the FL so I pass it. I watch Royal Feast because I take a chance for FL because her role in The Double ( I didn't remember I finish or not but maybe I finish it by the 3x play speed) .

I didn't read the novel. When I watch a drama I like to focus on plot story and the cast acting (like if they acting feel stiff or natural). If I like a drama and its on going like this drama, while I wait for next episode I will rewatch to focus on their character and the detail on their facial expression and gesture. So when I decide to finish the drama or dropped it I can point out the reason ( it can be in the production team fault not only actor fault). And if like you said the character in the novel is the same with what I said then Xu kai portray the character well. 👌🏻👌🏻 For 9 episode this drama is in my "need to finish" list , I just waiting for 1 more thing. Yeah I do suspect the agency has a part of his choice of project. Maybe because I am not a fan of him so I never follow his project. I only finish his drama where he is ML was As beautiful as you, the others I drop for reason the plot story is unbearable. The only reason I will watch his project is if I interest on his FL or not. I am not expecting anything when I start this drama, actually it's more like gamble for me because I am not a fan of ML. The only reason I start watching just because this is my first time seeing FL without full bang in her drama. When I see the trailer I wanna try l, that's what I though. After I watch, the story is quite interesting. People who say the FL keep play the same role is dummy. In this role what I find of her character is flirty but I can feel actually she is not into ML (at least for the 9 episode I watch) , she keep hovering around him because she need something from him not because she like him (at least not yet). The one who actually interest to the other is him.
She portray the character cat demon is quite well, her body language example like to sleep while basking in the sun. Her demeanor demand attention but she only pay attention when she want to give it, if you have a cat you will think the same. When FL and ML together ML can't help but pay attention on her but FL is not really. It's not because she snobbish but like I said Character of Cat.
I find the ML keep chosing the same cold and perfect male role, I don't know if it's his choice or agency. But in this drama it's a little different. He is not cold he just being indefferent. Make sense because he is a taoist who supposedly didn't desire any world thing. I like his character in this drama. Whoever shoot his solo scene when the frame focus in his face did a good job. Because I realize his eyes is beautiful. DEEP BROWN EYES. I watch some of his work, only in this drama he has lower status than FL. So seeing his act timid is kinda new. FL keep teasing him and even scold him but he doesn't even dare to get mad. Of course it's not entirely because she is a woman with higher status than him but because he is interest on her too.
And.... that's why I don't understand the rating. Just for acting alone I will at least give 8. The drama is still new on air but already 7.9
