Since you like Chinese historical dramas, you should start with some of the classic sageuks like Jumong, Queen…
Historical k-dramas with older looking or/and hotter male characters in my opinion: Jumong, Dae Jo Yeong (have only found some episodes on youtube till now but looks good), The Kingdom of the Winds, Chuno (hot shirtless guys!), Rebel (not the protagonist, but all the other guys), Six Flying Dragons (Ddang Sae is the hottest one imo, but there are others), Warrior Baek Dong Soo (the older guys/mentors are good, but the two boys are so beautiful that you'll forget you're not supposed to like boyish leads), Queen In Hyun's Man, Queen Seon Duk, Faith.
Thanks for this list. I'm still fairly new to Asian dramas. Started watching them sometime last year, and my first…
Since you like Chinese historical dramas, you should start with some of the classic sageuks like Jumong, Queen Seonduk, Empress Ki, etc., or the modern instant classic sageuk Six Flying Dragons (one of the best tv-shows of all time imho)!
Why don't you make this a feature of kisskh?? I think it would be a brilliant idea!! Just start by enabling voting for "moods" for each drama/movie listed (that would work similarly to rating). Then after enough opinions were gathered for database purposes, a "mood ring" would appear on everyone's profile, where we could get suggestions for what show to watch according to our current mood!! ...Or it could simply be another meter on each show, next to "Genres" and "Tags": "Moods" popularly associated with each drama/movie entry.
I like most of your points, but I totally disagree about the many-episodes dramas not binge-worthy!! In fact, I don't like binge-watching -20 ep dramas, cause they end way too soon (and usually they're not that engaging to me). I like watching around 10 episodes a day and most of the dramas take me 3-6 days to finish, less than that and I would feel the loss in my bones, lol! Especially if it's a drama I enjoyed thouroughly, when they finish I feel like nothing can replace them (do I need therapy? lol)!!
Ashes of Love is one of the best dramas this year - period! However, I wish that some of the other dramas also…
That's exactly my point!! I get it that people love Ashes of Love, and I feel it's a great romantic drama, but people should stop voting it first in ALL categories just for the sake of it winning, even though a category may be irrelevant for it!! (For example, Wuxia/Xianxia category. Ashes of Love is a good Romance, but definitely not a good Wuxia/XianXia, especially when there are dramas like Ever Night out there!! Heck, even Flame's Daughter was a very good Wuxia despite the kind of lousy writing & casting choices, but it never made it into the category, but AoL did?!)
typo: they put legend of yan xi instead of legend of yun xi
Yun Xi=Legend of Yun Xi (the one with the female doctor), whereas Yan Xi=Story of Yanxi Palace (the one with the harem), right? Because the called them with different names in different categories and it's confusing...
The fangirls of Ashes of Love should relax a bit. I mean, it's ok for it to win in e.g. Best Couple category, but for AoL to be ahead in Every Single Category (including best Chinese drama of 2018 (!?!)), I find it a bit ridiculous imho... ;)
This is the definition of "Slice of Life" genre drama. Usually not my cup of tea, but in this particular case, I love it (so far)! It's so well done, production-wise, acting-wise and writing-wise, that I just relax and enjoy its slow pace along with a cup of tea... If I were to descibe it, I'd say it's like a combination of a Jane Austen novel with Oliver Twist, but Song Chinese instead.
Is this more similar to Empress Ki or Six Flying Dragons? If it's the latter, that might explain why it's hard…
I'd say, imo, it's more similar to Empress Ki and Jumong. NOTHING is similar to the exquisiteness that is Six Flying Dragons, lol!! ...Though this is made by the same writers as Six Flying Dragons, and they reference QSD in 2-3 episodes of SFD.
Definitely worth mentioning: Liu Xiu & Yin Li Hua on Singing All Along!!! https://kisskh.at/8109-singing-all-along This chinese drama is often passed over by many because of its (silly?) title (including me until recently). Let me tell you, it's worth it, it's one of the best historical dramas with EVERYTHING in it & never boring for a second!! And one of my best female characters in a drama & also one of the strongest female characters ever!!

Thank you for this post! So in the novel there is at least a little bit more described where it comes from - interesting…
It remains to be seen, cause less than 2 of the 7 volumes of the book have been translated (I can't read Chinese!). It's probably still a McGuffin, too, but with an extra purpose to destroy any sexual tension between the leads (to delay the romance, maybe?)..
