If she were the daughter of an official, she'd marry another official and spend the rest of her life going to one event after the other flattering people and 'teaching her children' and trying her best to make her husband's family look good (if God forbid she doesn't give birth, she'd have to raise children by a concubine while hearing her in-laws lamenting her lack of offspring and if no hope can be found on the horizon, be forced to adopt them all). For a character like Mudan, it's the same prison, with different bars gilding them in. For the olden days women, there was rarely a win, there was just swallowing it and probably a lot of wet pillows at night.
