It's the writing, there's suspense, there's that appropriate tension, the unpredictable character arcs and the fact that it's not centered on some romance between the king and some concubine or even his queen.
From the very first episode, it was all about stakes, this I appreciate.

Kings have concubines, this is allowable by olden days laws to propagate the royal blood, which if one is considering how hard it was for children to survive childhood because of disease back then is absolutely a reasonable thing. Since as all men were allowed concubines, where does the cheating tag come from? it's an olden days thing, it isn't still in practice, why the strong feelings (this last part is for the original OP)

This actually gives more context to the stabbing scene and his desperate actions 🤔

Me three, he is desperate to maintain his authority and he thinks the queen is the only obstacle in his path so he'll eliminate anything that gives her leverage, but I gots an inkling that he is wrong but doesn't realize it yet.

There are some graphic scenes for sure, but they're nothing to raise hell about. It's action. It's not real, however if that makes you uncomfortable, then don't watch it please.

So far, this is the best historical I've seen from a lifetime of sageuk watching. This king is a terror fr.
