“- A wife needs to know how to cook..”- I feel so sorry for our master… His wife is good at running this business, but she can’t cook very well…- I get fed the same foods everyday. She’s terrible!”It’s an old drama set in the old days so this can’t be helped. This is how a father talked about his wife disrespectfully in front of his son and wife and another man, and they all laughed it off together. No wonder a lot of Asian men are patriarchal. They must have inherited it from their fathers. My father used to do the same thing with my mom in front of me and my brother.

This would be my last post about this asadora today. I’m scared about all the hardships that Oshin might be facing ahead, but I’m also happy for her at the same time. She’s always been a strong woman and she always knows what she’s doing. I’m sure she’ll be fine no matter what. Some of my favorite words from Oshin in this episode:- “One needs to make up one’s own mind. I chose this path myself… I’ll have no regrets!”- “She was prepared to forever protect her happiness.”

Now this feels a bit like When Life Gives You Tangerines but the guy is opposite to Yang Gwang Sik…“You’d look great in the kitchen!” - If any guy says something similar to you women, please run as fast as you can. He’s a huge red flag!! And that shameless father and older brother of hers… Ugh! I dislike every man in this drama so far, except for the deserter man and the old man who saved Oshin’s life at age 7.

Sorry I laughed so hard at this scene. Maybe it was the first start for the take-money-and-leave-my-son classic trope in modern K-Dramas later on. 🤣🤣🤣Bravo to Oshin in this scene! 🙌 Her reaction was perfect, and the old guy was in shock but he totally deserved it.That son from the wealthy family was a jerk anyway. I smell a strong ‘pampered son’ and ‘mama boy’ vibe from him. I have a feeling that Oshin’s life would be miserable if she married this guy. And he never brought up anything with her or asked her first, and suddenly just announced his controlling and manipulative mother that she would be his bride. I was like ‘wtf man’. Poor Oshin had absolutely no idea about this while being wrongfully accused of seducing her son into marriage by a stranger woman. 🤦♀️🫠Ep 73

There were some difficult conversations in both episode 67 and 68, and they made me think a lot about my mom. Her life has not been easy. Like Oshin, she worked hard to support her family at a young age, not as young as Oshin though. She was also badly treated and used by her eldest brother and just cut off with him recently after. I’m so relieved now that I don’t have to meet that uncle and his children anymore at all. I never liked them in the first place and it was so frustrating to watch my mom get involved with them when they were just taking advantage of her all the time. I had some difficult conversations with my mom, asking her to leave my father several times. And she also said some similar words as Oshin’s mother, as she was worried she would become an issue if I loved someone and she would be a burden, an embarrassment to my marriage. How silly. Also, the way Oshin’s mom said she didn’t need anything other than her daughter’s happiness reminds me a lot of When Life Gives You Tangerines. I think this is another drama with strong messages about life, womanhood and motherhood. But I feel that this one is much heavier. Obviously, it’s an old drama released in the 80s. My mother also said she sacrificed her happiness for my own good. Anyway, both Oshin and her mother are strong women. Actually, I think a lot of female characters in this drama are strong women. So far I love most of them, but I haven’t liked any male characters yet.

In this episode, Kayo stole and read Oshin’s letter and hid it from her, and went to the meeting place instead of her, after getting mad at Oshin and breaking off their ‘friendship’. At this point, I found Kayo so annoying.First, were they really equal ‘friends’ in their relationship, when she always acted like she was the boss? And indeed, Kayo is Oshin’s boss!Second, who gave her the right to read Oshin’s letter without her consent, if Kayo really saw Oshin as a friend, instead of her servant? Yeah, Kayo got mad because Oshin had been hiding her meeting with Kota, but why shouldn’t she tell anyone about her private meetings? She has the right to tell no one about her private life. Kayo has no right to meddle in Kota and Oshin’s relationship when he’s never hers in the first place. In fact, it was Oshin who met him first, and he only has eyes for Oshin. Also, this episode reminds me of an old story that my mom told me when she was young. Some guys sent a lot of letters to her, but her so-called ‘friends’ in her village back then hid everything, and she only found out the truth many years later. That’s when she stayed single for a long time.I guess these kinds of things happened a lot back in the days when mobile phones, the internet or social media didn’t exist yet. People would easily lose in touch with each other over a misunderstanding.

“She never thought of herself, and she lived for her family. That's how a woman lives...For her family. The Old Madame words rang true to Oshin now.Oshin wanted more out of life...More than her mother or her grandmother.Oshin didn't want to find comfort in death.Oshin felt both pity and anger at what had happened to her grandmother.- I'll work hard, and I'll make a lot of money.- I don't want to be like Grandma... I don't want to have nothing when I die... I'll never be a sharecropper!Oshin was headed back to Sakata...But Oshin was no longer the same girl...She was growing up...”These words were like speaking to me. I was basically having the same thought when my grandma (my mom’s mother) passed away a few years ago. Although she didn’t die out of poverty, her family also used to be poor and she worked so hard her whole life to support her family, her late husband and children. She’d sacrificed a lot when she was alive. Everyone praised her life for her great sacrifices while I pitied her and got mad inside. This asadora was made in the 80s, but I’m sad that these words are still a fact in a lot of places today, including mine. A lot of people here still think a woman’s life depends on her husband, and after she gets married, her life will be completely different, and she will be the one who sacrifices a lot and still get criticized for not being a good wife material enough.Oshin was growing up so early, with this mindset, but I think that’s the spirit that she should have! And I’m glad that a lot of women in today’s world also have a better mindset. I was thinking of When Life Gives You Tangerines when I watched this episode today.

“I deserve to die.” - these words came from the mouth of a 7-year-old girl who constantly abused and thought she deserved it. Anyway, I guess Oshin and Kayo will become best friends from now on. 🥹 If that’s the case, I think their big fight would be the best way to start a close friendship. 😅I love Kayo’s grandma a lot. She’s such a strong, smart, wise, righteous and kind-hearted old lady. I respect her. I’m glad that Oshin can stay and work for her. I think Oshin will learn a lot from her in the future.

Beautiful episode.Little stories of different characters touch my heart. I have my new favorite characters. Everyone in this drama now has become my favorite. ❤️ Aunt Feng, Xia Qiang, 4 adorable little kids, Na Na, Xie Xia, Xiao Chun, Hu You Yu, Bai Manjun… Anyone is so special with their own stories.I literally cried at the touching moments between Aunt Feng and her son. Xiao Chun has always been a badass female character and she is also so cool in this episode. I was so worried that her ending would be different, like a lot of female characters in similar situations, but it was a relief that she didn’t disappoint me. I love her so much!

“Since you’re not the one going this, you don’t have to care. The amount of stress everyone can handle is different. Don’t use your own imagination to easily evaluate the life that others experienced.”This episode has other heart-to-heart conversations with great messages. It focuses on my two most favorite characters in the drama, besides Zhi Yao’s grandma. :)

“What’s good and what’s bad, who can define it? Who can promise the path you choose is good? So just live… Go with the flow.”I love heart-to-heart conversations between siblings and family members. They say family is the foundation for your inner strength and confidence. I totally agree. Hong Dou has such a loving and supportive family. I really her. :)

Do Asian parents like Hong Dou’s really exist? They are so sweet and gentle towards their daughters. They keep all of their daughter’s childhood stuff, not throw them away. They are so supportive, and they even apologize!

“When we talk about someone, she exists. When we don’t talk about her, she disappears.”This episode is very emotional. I love every minute of it, especially the conversation between Hong Dou and Nan Nan’s mom about Nan Nan. It reminds me of a conversation I had in this March with my best friend’s mom about someone who passed away about 9 years ago. He’s my best friend’s closest cousin and also lived in my neighborhood. After 9 years, it was the first time I heard about him again. I never dared to ask or talk about him all these years.

OMG why are there so many things I relate to in this drama? I also love tea so much and my secret little dream is to open a tea shop too! Actually I just tell some people about it but as a joke only, but it’s really my dream. 🥹 I’m so sad that there are not aa many tea shops as coffee shops out there, like Mr. Ma. But the type of my dream tea shop is both similar and opposite to Mr. Ma’s. I also have a lot of fear so it’s been only in my head and I haven’t dared to do it. Can I really come out of my comfort zone and make my little startup dream come true in the future? I wrote some little notes here as a reminder. I will come back if I can really do it. 😊Also, that the kids stay with their grandparents in the countryside when their parents go to big cities to work is also very relatable. A lot of my friends were like that. And I miss my grandma even more in this episode. How come Zhi Yao’s grandma so similar to mine? I wish I could stay with her and have fun with her more.
