For me, the series ends with both of them having shed their old baggage, admitting their feelings and thus laying the foundation for their future path as lovers.
JT: He stays open, doesn't run up his protective walls and doesn't "pack his suitcase", gives SW time and waits for him. SW place belongs to him= SW belongs to him. Broken bond tied together= they belong together. The poem recited by the teacher in the background is fitting.
SW: admits to himself that he is no longer alone with JT and that he is the only one he has really confided in. He admits his own feelings and his fear of them and is ready to overcome his fear and follow his feelings. "No need to hesitate nor to calculate. I am invincible and capable of anything!" Then he is ready to return. The foundation for their path together as lovers has been laid.
For me, it's quite a good open ending and it becomes more fitting once you get over the initial "shock" of the ending.
