Shen Li was not jealous, she could not care less about the beautiful fairies who vie for the god's attention, knowing that he is as cold as an iceberg, despite he has shown from the start some partiality to her as an exception. Even the really alluring Golden Lady Snake does not move Xing Zhi from his final choice. She felt awkward about the star gazing following drunk episode with Mo Fang, but never considered Mo Fang as more than a military brother-in-arms, or subordinate. She did taunt the god rather mischievously, but he was her first and last choice despite she believed she was over reaching and should accept the marriage deal prepared, instead. Shen Li also had a fun moment cross dressing and interacting with the Lady in front of XZ (cross dressed as SL) to make fun of males' jealousy. Lin Gengxin was perfect in his role, throughout. A real full and layered presence (not like the too thin youngster the god had, at first, randomly assigned as husband for the immortal he did not know yet). Shen Li could not have chosen better: love, reliability, manly handsomeness, unpredictable moments of fun and decisiveness, and power! Li Jiaqi acted beyond her usual comic relief role, when You Lan showed her real non romantic deep care for the god and for her wayward brother, even offering herself as a shield in battle.
This is a chaotic story, less comedy than caricature of the survival into modern days of outdated customs and the clash of greed and family.
An awful looking fortune teller, who of course had a hidden backer, instructed a gullible middle aged woman (Chen Guihua) to get her son (Gu Jiahui) and daughter in law (Yu Jing) to "make a descendant", less for her own desire than for getting back a dowry she was cheated out of when she agreed to divorce her son's dad (Gu Dequan). She suddenly arrived at her son's apartment, in company of her "step daughter" (Yu Chun).
The daughter in law was busy setting up a company with a best friend (Xiao Shan), so making babies was not her primary goal ; Xiao Shan, feeling the threat if Yu Jing changed her mind, with all the baby care products she sells online, took a drastic step to force a divorce between her friend and her wimpy husband.
The old man was quite the fiend, aided and abetted by his second wife cum free caretaker (Li Xiao), who was not even pitiable. The couple found out about the conspiracies and tried to confront the ones who were behind them. Even those who seemed close to Chen Guihua and Yu Jing were double faced.
Fights, abduction, slanders, embezzlement, wife beating, mistreatment.... That family is the couple is saddled with, is as dysfunctional as can be. Will the old fiend, at the brink of death, get a redemption and escape punishment for his decades of wrongdoings ? He does get a slap in the face when he is confronted with the truth about his younger son. If tradition requires descendants, he has in fact no choice. He is afraid to die alone and get to afterlife with no proper mourning in his luxurious mansion in cherry growing countryside, despite his ill gotten wealth.
The drama is fast paced, sometimes jumpily so, and there is a happy end of sorts. Can be watched on a rainy day, amused by the wives epic hair pulling, like hens flying into each other's feathers ; a fat rabbit once steals the show.
The full cast was not disclosed on Baidu, despite there are only 7 who drive that mini drama. It is airing now, and I'm doing a speed watch, for an aside from other dramas that were "heavier" (Angels Fall Sometime , War of Faith and The Legend of Shen Li, the latter being a deceptively "simple" xianxia that has actually deeper roots than they first appear). Just started, so will include it in my list later (or not if I end up finding it as unsatisfactory as those 33 users who rate it to a median 6.8).

it's a lotus, reminding of the connection to Xiao He who was reincarnated as Jing Xi (both were demons, contrary to Ye Shi reincarnated as Shi Luo). Qing Ye, the fallen god who had been condemned by the Natural Law (higher power with no face which decided on creation, gods included) to forever miss his love in the lives in mortal realm where he roamed as Gu Chengjin and later as Jing Yan, had conflicting feelings of guilt for the demon he had used to try revive Ye Shi.
The fate thing is a form of "karma" : what people, gods and immortals or demons included, do, will reap rewards or retribution. Those who strayed from the "path" (dao) they should have followed, shirking responsibility or selfishly using powers for themselves, would be punished: the gods who "fell in love", singling out one person among the all they should care for, were stripped of their godly powers, ejected from the Extranatural heaven, and condemned to roam as humans, going through rebirth as reincarnations like ordinary human, although very few could transiently keep some memories (Qing Ye needed to be "awakened" by Xing Zhi).
So, would this forever spinning wheel stop ? Watch till last episode, and see what became of Qing Ye and the new incarnations of his love and guilt, once they let go of their obsessions...
We already got a hint of their parenting style, in the episode with the small carp spirits ganging up to pester and splash the phoenix ! And XZ getting the rod out of thin air, to "punish" them, because "spare the rod and spoil the child" core belief!
Episode 39 and the "surprised expression" of Xing Zhi in the end was so entertaining. Lady Jin was missed, and we did get to see her, tying in with a very nice finale !
I enjoyed this xianxia very much, thrilled to see that it got over 100 million views lately, to share in the excitement. The core was important, but not so much that it couldn't be lived without. Finally, the time of the gods ended but not our favorites', to enjoy peace and love, and mischief, that added spice, after all the pain they'd gone through.
I have finished the Characters illustrated gallery, with short bio notes on the 63 we heard the name of during the 39 episodes. Added some Gif as well so it will not be too static. Now that it's over, you can have a look to remember, and do the challenge of naming the 37 in the group picture, or, for newcomers who start now, this is meant also as a companion piece, with characters listed by order of appearance, explaining who they are (big spoilers are hid, so those who prefer to discover the key elements can decide whether or not they want to click on those revelations to know more.) But I did not key in all the endings (final or not), so as to leave suspense intact and only build anticipation in the descriptions.
The final episodes (but not #39) were a bit protracted, but most of the time, things went fast and smooth, even when, like in the first episodes, it looked like it was slow in developing, but the contrast between LGX's "old god" slow enunciation, with pauses to reflect, and ZLY's straightforward diction was totally in character, bringing sometimes outrageous quips to add to the comedic glints in the eyes of the "old god" who had seen it all and was tired of shouldering responsibility single handedly for the worlds he had partly created.
Sometimes, deep reflections and thoughts were proffered : are gods still needed in our new age ? Do they need to be violently killed or cremated, or can they just retire and live for themselves ? Can those who have been put into power and accepted the duties, always be up to their tasks ?
I liked that the drama was a soft romance too, satisfying if not of the steamy sort, and that the marriage question was shown as not that necessary, as a political or society requirement, but just as a cherry on top of the cake, sealing the union in less flamboyant way as sealing an Abyss, but leaving room for sparks and continued slow burn but long lasting fire. This viral message to those who still see marriage as needed at a certain age, with desirable or not age gap, and body appearance in terms of height, roundness of face or filling the clothes as well as the shoes. Walking bare feet on the shards was one striking moment to show how despair and depression can hit even those that are relied on, taking them for granted, watching their moves and judging behaviors from below.
This drama actually went further than only pure entertainment. So it will now sit among my top dramas.
