"Arguably, if Yong San's brother had a proper mentor, he would not have taken this path."
Truth. If he had HJP as a mentor, the problem would have been solved and maybe the brother would have gone with another idea. But ofc HJP' haters won't accept facts.

I'm not even sure what to respond to this at this point. The way the suicide plot was treated was irresponsible from the writer part (glad she fixed in the end but still lot of immature people were blaming HJP).
You can't just blame on some words and ignore everything else about mental health. That's toxic and irresponsible. Mental health problems are more than this.
I have the same issue with "13 reasons why" because they ignore the fact that we are still in control of our lives and we can change ourselves/our life even if nothing/no one else does.
The victim mentality is not helpful and teaching people it's ok to blame someone else for your ultimate decision and ignore the fact that you're the person in charge of your life is wrong. We shouldn't trivialize this.
From a viewer that watch Vagabond then Start-up. I would say that what a huge waste of talent the writer did for…
Still the lack of knowledge doesn't justify her lack of personality in the end. She stoped being curious and became an even worse professional. She became an object in the end.
The success is plot armor. They made her successful but it's not believable. I am working a lot in the business world and I know for a fact there's no such thing as Startup's success. You need to be good, have lot of discipline and fail a lot which we don't see here. If it's not because the script said otherwise, they would have failed terribly with all the bad decisions they made. HJP is the only character that was grounded in reality, but feel free to believe what you want. I'm talking from experience and lot of studying, not to ship/fangirl over someone.
And come on, making their selfdriving car startup into an unicorn in one year or so, that's not even close to realistic. Most unicorns will take 7 years at least to become one.
It's nice for a fiction drama but is way far from reality.
Am surprised that people hate Suzy or NJH and say that HJP is all that mattered bcos lets face it HJP could not…

For most people HJP/gramma carried the drama (I, myself, would have dropped it if not for him ngl) and it might be because those people are more mature and wouldn't watch a teenager romance like the one NDS/SMD was portraying.
The carrying is because most people only watched it in hopes to see a good ending for their fav character and they wouldn't have watched if this character wasn't there.
It comes down to preference. You liked it and consider all of them carried the drama? Good for you. I do although believe HJP shined but it's because I'm not the target audience for a teen drama. To sum up none of this justify hating, I would like people to agree to disagree in a nice way.
(The whole HJP situation reminds me of Rachelle from Barbie serie: kids hate her, adults love her)

I liked Suzy a lot at first. She wanted to be like Steve Jobs and I totally supported her. Her wanting to get successful because of her sister was her character flaw which made her more human.
Until she wasn't. Until she became an object. PHR did her really dirty and didn't even give audience a chance to understand what she was feeling and why.

I'd go for the plot change too. PHR is well experienced and not a bad writer. Can't imagine her going all "It's such a great idea to make my ML toxic and violent! And what about making him an imposter for life? Susanah, write that down! We're making legend here"

Subversion would have been Christian ending up with Roxanne, which is not that hard to do right? I mean, even I can make a better story on why Christian is a better option and how the past should stay in the past.
There's 2 story in 1: the fist story is till the 9th episode and should have ended with Jidal together and the second story from 10-16 should have started differently, highlighting more NDS's good traits and SDM saying to her granma that she likes the Dosan from the present better. I see 2 parts of 2 different stories together, that's why I'm disappointed with Startup.

"Subversion of reader expectation to challenge long-held beliefs is one of the most difficult — and the most important — things storytellers can do.
Subversion involves foiling the expectation of your audience. Subversion aims to challenge pre-existing views. This is hard to achieve because the writer must intuit what the audience will expect, as well as what they already believe to be true about the world. The writer must have a solid understanding of psychology and of cultural tropes."
I don't think that's it. What long-held beliefs is PHR challenging? All I saw is chichés everywhere. Subversion would have been HJP/SDM together, right (FL/SML) or Christian ending up with Roxanne? I'm not sure if I'm getting it, might come back after some more reading/learning.
DM’s mom in the end feels strange for me. We have three versions of her in three stages. Another strange thing…
HJP: I want to be the first pers... SDM: Sorry, my YT notification. Cheolsan just posted a new vlog and I gotta go watch Dosanah. We'll continue this conversation... never. I don't really care about what you're about to say and it won't even matter in a few days. So... we cool bruh?
I feel like their split was unnecessary, it didn't feel like them. First glinch in their relationship and they…
I think it was quite necessary. It confronted them and made them think. We've seen more of Mijoo's issues and we can finally see the KSG being stubborn for the first time in his life. I actually loved the split. We've seen their nuances as individuals, how they overcame this and how is their relationship dynamic.
WIJ, was suppose to be one of the leads. Someone actually added up all her screen times throughout the show, and…
Yep, that was so so weird from DM's part. The changing plot theory is not that stupid. Maybe the SF thing was supposed to be handled differently, maybe back then the mother was already with them. Who knows
I completely agree with this post. And it's not just HJP, you can count on WIJ as well.Because HJP and WIJ existed…
Without HJP, trust me, I wouldn't stick around. I've seen many dramas with similar stories as NDS/SDM's and all of them boring, predictable and full of chiches. I've been in the kdrama world for 8 years now so I'm a lil bit tired of the damsel in distress who can't think or act without a man. Even with the changing plot, PHR should have known better. We want women to be seen as people not objects.
I would have never finish Startup if not for the parallels and theories. I like good stories that's why I give dramas a try and not waste my time when the story gets as bad as this one.
Luckly we have gems as "Run on", I was about to lose my faith in kdramas after Startup ended
Oh, man, the "break up" scene. You can see him low key panicking when he realized she wanted to break up. I love the ISW acting there. He portrayed the perfect amount of emotion coming from a not that openly emotional character. You can see the subtle desperation in his voice/face. That's really good acting over there (if you've seen the film scenes from Mijoo imagination, you can see that ISW can express a lot also)
*Crying in lost potential* Thank you so much for putting so much effort in this. It's so informative and I agree…
Keep doing it :) we need to reach our 30k mark. And also I'm sad I lost most Jidal threads and I wanted to reread the theories. Startup drama might be PHR lowest point. Not sure why she did what she did, I'm sorry we'll never have the chance to watch the original story.

hehe If they stalk you don't go to the police, go buy your wedding dress #lessonlearnt
