I've seen a few movies now about small chinese villages and they have all been terrifying in that the communities are often small-minded and suffocating. This is a lovely tale of how love can bloom in the most unlikely of places. It was excellently told, with wonderful acting and an unpredictable storyline.
Hakamada has been released since this movie came out, I believe. Wikipedia says;
'On March 27, 2014, Hakamada was released from prison and granted a retrial by the Shizuoka District Court.....In June 2018, the Tokyo High Court overturned the ruling that had Hakamada released. He was allowed to retain his freedom due to his age until the case returns to the Supreme Court.'
I don't know where the case stands now, but one can only hope for the best. Apparently he lost his mind because of the 40+ years of solitary confinement. This world is a monstrous place. I hope he gets justice, even if it feels like it's too late. This was a wonderful movie, btw. I had no idea about this case until I stumbled upon it.
Pros: excellent acting/writing, humorous, endearing Cons: tone shift towards end
Ayano Go is perfect in all his movies, so it's no surprise that he gave a great performance here as well. The last quarter of the film felt a tad bit rushed, but I didn't mind it as the rest of the movie was just awesome.
I loved all the different characters in the mental hospital. All their different quirks added a bit of light humour.
YES! That was my thoughts, as well! Also, some clues I noticed to tell me they are together in Korea are the red…
lol I was stressed for so long after the movie about whether or not they were in Korea. They definitely ended up together. There's no question about it!
Okay so this was a total surprise for me. I wasn't expecting anything from it, I don't even know if I read the synopsis before watching it. I cried, I laughed, I yearned, I yelled at the screen... This was just incredible. I've seen, heard, and read every love story on the planet and besides Romeo and Juliet, this one has to be my favourite. I've rewatched this probably one hundred times and I plan on rewatching it one hundred more.
Correct me if I am wrongThe ending is he calls her and then they go to Korea.. remember the painting on his wall…
YES! That was my thoughts, as well! Also, some clues I noticed to tell me they are together in Korea are the red thing she is knitting [he always wore red] and the ring on her finger seems to be the same one he picked out at the jewellers. I think I read somewhere that the director wanted people to make up their own minds about the ending, but left those clues for us. I wanted to see him sitting beside her on the beach so badly though T_T
Omg this was so sad?? and yet endearing?? The ML did SUCH a good job with his character. I can't even phathom the fact that this kind of stuff really happens to people with intellectual disabilities.
Enjoy! =)

Negative(s) - lack of plot.
I'm not sure what the point of this film was but I enjoyed it anyways. I was engaged in the characters from start to finish, so that's good.
