If it's makes you feel any better I watched a drama rated 7.9 (later went up to an 8) and it was excellent. It was a really chipper, silly drama though so I imagined it enraged certain types of people.
I usually ignore the ratings and tend to watch dramas based on random YouTube things that pop up on my feed.
YD and YY were cropping up in clips everyday being epic so I gave it a go😅
Fair enough I watched 3 full on palace dramas before this (love them but they are the dearth of romance with all those scheming wives).
I definitely enjoy this drama for the epic romance (soooooo epic, hopefully it'll stay epic) so I'll bow out and let the others advise you because I'm only analysing the relationship in this 😍
I'm not really a fan of anyone, first time I've watched these actors.
The reality is it takes a certain kind of personality to like/dislike a drama and based on AvenueX's reviews and recommendations I would say that if you enjoy the same dramas as her, you WILL NOT like this drama. Just saving you time here. There are plenty of things you'll find enjoyable, this is probably not going to be it!
If you cannot suspend disbelief, if you like to pick at things, if many many things bother you, you will not like this drama. It all washes over my head and I don't notice these things but I've seen people gripe loooooots at what I deem is insignificant. So of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if one has a propensity to gripe about things, one is not going to enjoy this!
I love that YY didn't take in YD because she was cursed, had uncontrollable powers, he needed to keep an eye on her, owed her parents, she needed a sifu etc etc
He took her in so they could fight with each other and he could spice up his life🤣
Love that scene on the roof where he was miffed that she wanted to go work for ZiYi one day and basically told her (to paraphrase) "But you goof around and eat my food all day at my palace, why don't you want to stay?"
I like that there's not a power imbalance with them. Yan Dan does whatever the hell she wants anyway including telling dramatic tales to the Heavenly Emperor.
Speaking of Heavenly Emperor, that scene where Yan Dan tells the sob story about how Ying Yuan plotted against her and bullied her was superb. I really like the HE actor in that scene. His eyes were shifting between YY and YD and he looked like he was thinking "Is this for real??? YY is my good boy did he really do all this stuff???"
YD was off on her tangent, getting more dramatic by the minute and YY was like "You're overdoing it, tone it down"
Great emoting by all three actors. It was so hilarious 🤣

So yes this drama hits me on a very personal level.

I'm used to watching palace dramas where I knew exactly who died and went in basically knowing certain things were doomed.
