Xu Kai’s latest project is a historical costume drama — one whose script he also finds especially interesting. Over the past year, he’s taken on a range of diverse roles: from the supernatural period Moonlit Reunion, to the modern crime thriller Fire Investigator, and the suspenseful Within 800 Meters. “Right now, I happen to feel like returning to historical costume dramas again.” And so, this timely collaboration came to life — just when the moment felt right.
After joining the new filming team, Xu Kai first had a face-to-face conversation with the director, where they exchanged their perceptions of the script “We try to find a balance,” he says. “Once we’re on the same page, we start fleshing out the details and adding a few elements that might give the character extra edge.” Before shooting begins, Xu Kai always prepares detailed notes, filling in what the script leaves unsaid. “For example, I’ll think about the character’s background or past. In my mind, I need to build a structure, so that when it comes time to shoot, I have enough material to communicate, and to improvise with flexibility”.
After completing the preparations, Xu Kai will discuss again with the director and screenwriters to confirm whether his own ideas will affect the direction of the character's design. "It is likely no matter, as long as you don’t push it too far," Xu Kai shared with us. For example, in his new drama, he plays a high-ranking official in the court who is thoughtful, calculating, and handles situations calmly and rationally. Xu Kai will reflect on: "What has he gone through? What shaped his current personality?" Once having imagined these elements, he could preliminarily grasp the overall spirit of the script. (From Xu Kai's interview on Men's Uno 5/2025)
"In the upcoming fantasy drama Moonlit Reunion, Xu Kai describes his character, Mei Zhuyu, as a “refined young gentleman with a cold exterior but a warm heart.” He is a demon-slaying priest of the Changxi Palace—quick-witted yet composed, righteous yet secretly cunning (Note: the original term fù hēi refers to someone who appears kind but harbors hidden motives). Mei Zhuyu shoulders both a mission and a profound sense of duty: to eliminate all demons across the world and maintain peace in the realm, while also searching for the truth about his own identity. He and Wu Zhen walk two divergent paths, seemingly destined to oppose each other, but as they draw closer, they find themselves drawn in by one another. Their relationship is one of “loving while having to fight each other”—like a supernatural, historical version of 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith.'
Mei Zhuyu and Xu Kai himself differ greatly in terms of personality. “Mei Zhuyu appears rather cold on the outside, as if there’s no warmth in him at all, but deep down, he’s burning with passion,” Xu Kai remarked. Portraying a character so far removed from his own personality is by no means easy. “It’s very easy to end up with a stiff, expressionless performance, so I have to pay extra attention to what emanates from within the character—things like his gaze, emotions, and subtle details—in order to convey what he’s feeling.”

In his original plan, he would not have romantic relationship with Houchi. He was just a friend, a guardian. However, fate dictated differently. Qing Mu was the accident and he could not control what went between Qing Mu and Houchi.
Rewatching (again) and it's still timeless. I'm really— really!— glad that they started the entire story during…
The first draft of the script was written following the timeline in the novel meaning starting with Qing Mu - Houchi 's life. However, when reviewing the script, production team found that such order was not viewer-friendly. Thus they changed the order and added introduction about the Three Realms and characters etc. It took about 2 years writing the script. It's lucky that the author's original novel - Ting Ling was a member of script-writing team
What is the ending for Bai Jue and Shanggu in the novel?
Same as in the drama (except that he had to search for her in the Peach blossom forest since she was afraid of that the new True God was not him). Ah BTW in the novel she just kneeled for 10 years then was blew by the Ancestral God, waiting for another 90 years and he came back
