Finally got to finish this as well. I was watching multi-C-dramas at once and then got super busy with life and I am just completing each one now.
Even with all the flaws this drama had, it was such an interesting story and a pleasant watch for me.
Unlike when I suddenly get busy and unable to keep watching an airing drama, I often won't return to it. This one was very different. This shows how interesting it is.
He was silently rebuking him form usurping Guo Rong's throne. The three of them were good friends. While he understood…
Yep! A message of peaceful reunification and how it is better to be whole. Even I who is not Chinese felt that message. The message was definitely well sent 🤣
WOW! This show was worth all the time I spent on it. Took a while, but finally got to finish it. I laughed, cried and felt deeply moved by the story. Truly admired: Zhu Ya Wen, Bai Yu, Zhou Yu Tong, and all the other younger and older cast delivery of their roles.
The drama also reminded me of the C-drama era of long episodes. I know this is only 48, but still longer than the usual 38 episodes and smaller that has been the standard for a while.

I was just about to say didn't Guo Rong pass the throne to him when he handed him the yellow banner. Even his wife knew, because he was telling her before he died "who will she and their son rely on". The wife then forged an edict to say the throne was passed to her son. Even the ministers knew it was forged from their facial expressions. They knew something was wrong with the edict. As they know that Guo Rong knows, that the throne in chaotic times have never been passed to a child. But, I am glad they could resolve the misunderstanding.
I am so behind, my gosh! I haven't followed up in days now (i still don't even know when i can follow again).Life is so busy! `Just came to rant because I miss watching ðŸ˜
Loved this drama. But, it seems to have no real purpose other than make viewers feel emotional. I The drama purposely throws in scenarios that will tug at emotions for the heck of it or even show people working extra hard or overcoming. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with passing the message, it’s just done in an unnatural well. You could tell that’s what they are aiming at.
Also, I thought the development would go from 80s to present day. But, we don’t see it actually. I feel I watched a drama with no real aim. This is the producers issue and not the cast.
I'm not too familiar with the history, but the show did briefly mention that he did not want to submit to the…
Aha! I thought Shi Chongui was the one named since he was asked to immediately ascend. I initially thought it was because the dying emperor wanted to save his son from a forceful takeover once he dies.
The drama cut out a lot of material. So the "son emperor" was Shi Jingtang, not Shi Chonggui; Shi Chonggui…
Finally! An absolutely wonderful answer! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 😊
I mean, someone was excusing the producers and making it the duty of the viewer to research the history while watching a show that is still an entertainment product after all.
A simple narration like you’ve succinctly described would have been more than enough to carry the viewers along.
Thanks again. It felt like I was not watching it properly for a moment there ðŸ¤.
There is a discussion on Reddit that is quite helpful and filled the gaps for me as my knowledge of the history…
Just a little disappointed as this is touted as a big budget and well done drama. Anyway, guess no matter the status of a C-drama, it can still come out choppy.

That’s what I’m saying, even though it’s not intended for foreign viewers, I’m sure not all Chinese as well are familiar with this particular history/period. I mean you have to be interested in that period or taken a course about it to know. So, makes no sense producers chopped it up. A simple narration for events they don’t want to show/cut off would have sufficed.

For such a complicated historical drama cutting scenes out is a terrible decision. It makes viewers confused. Viewers are supposed to understand the story (I’m sure not all Chinese know this history, especially younger generations).

I will miss it how entertaining it was. ðŸ˜

Not a bad drama overall though.
I do have to revisit that scene.
Yes, it was mentioned he lost and betrayed, never said why he was acting out and had a total personality change.
