I’m struggling to watch Bai Lu in this after Northward. She really needs to pivot to better acting dramas/movies and leave idol work alone. I know this drives traffic for the young ones/fandom, but my gosh, I can’t even get through episode 1. It doesn’t feel like an actual real drama, so full of cliche, terrible storytelling and CGI.
I actually think they focused too much on the marquis out of 3 villains and the other 2 should get a proper story…
It’s why I mentioned that it seems all effort was given to the first one. Which was why it was more interesting. Maybe if the gave the others a proper story (like with Marquis) all the villains’ stories would have been equally interesting and engaging.
I felt differently, although I was worried that his “early” death would slow down the drama’s interest.…
I know he orchestrated everything. It’s why they never fought him or exposed him even when they were being drowned by the fight with Zang Hai. The Duke only wrote to warn the Eunuch and not him.

That was confusing too. But it seems they didn’t know he was the 3rd person. After all the Eunuch believed he was allied with Dongxia’s queen. But then again, before the Eunuch’s death he showed up, so it seems his identity was known to him? It’s not clear.
Zhuang Lu Yin / Duke Ping Jin should have been made the last villain to go, his part was the most interesting in this drama. It's like all the effort was put into the first act, and the drama lost steam afterwards. Still an ok watch and wrapped up nicely. The older actors carried the drama (I enjoyed the Duke and Cao's (Eunuch) performances).
This was such a good show to watch. The leads and co-leads were superb! The crew did a wonderful job with the production (stunning cinematography). I will miss it.
I can't believe I just got into this show. I saw how highly rated it was and saw @PeachBlossomGoddess's review, and I said I should try it. Halfway through, not bad. There are so many moving parts, so many mysteries, and, of course, a touch of humour. Let's see how it ends.
How did they write Zang Hai so horrible. I mean he spent 10 years training to be a strategist to infiltrate and avenge his parents. Yet, everyone has seen through and out bested him. The 2nd master, the lady of the tavern, even the Duke himself. I can’t even hide his real identity. I’m confused. It’s too early to be failing so badly.
