It's been fascinating to watch what feels like a massive drop in quality of Thai BLs over the last year while Japanese and Korean BLs have remained consistent or improved.
But here we are another series focusing on all the wrong things and giving viewers an urge to fast forward or turn it off within the first 15 minutes. First episodes used to be about attracting viewers snd making them eager to watch future episodes. But that's rare in Thai BL these days.
I could deal with all the focus on Punn's family and his HORRIBLE brother Pai, if we weren't also subjected to everything happening on the set of Achi's show. I have no clue if the writer was also involved in War of Y, but the endless catfighting between the managers gave me WOY vibes in the worst way possible. I can't recall a BL with so many awful characters over 40. Or a BL where I had to hear "bitch" so many times. Idk if any BL fans watch BL to see immature mean spirited older people and constant bickering, but I didn't enjoy any of that.
I know this show has a built in audience of JaFirst fans. But there wasn't enough of either of them to make up for all of the awful side characters and overacting. I'll stick around for one more week. But that was a miserable start and I fast forwarded a lot!
This has quickly become one of my most anticipated series. GMMTV alums Nammon and Frank have both been trying to find BL success since leaving that company. I hope the script and director create something really good.
*sigh* why does it seem like a lot of Thai companies making BLs these days hate BL fans and actors? I really want Frank and Lee Long to be in something good. But that trailer was mostly awful. And the dubbing was unforgivable. Wait a few weeks and fix the trailer BEFORE releasing it if there's issues with the sound editing.
Please don't let this be as bad as Love Syndrome 🙏
For me this is easily the most disappointing series of the year. I've seen worse written series and series with much worse acting. But this show had all the ingredients to be good or at least ok and it COMPLETELY failed.
We got about 30 minutes of the leads in a relationship with zero romance in 12 looooonnnngggg infuriating episodes. I almost never care about a lack of skinship in a series, but this was a bromance at best. No one could convince me that these two characters will ever share a passionate kiss or anything more.
All the time wasted with misunderstandings and Shimizu playing the stereotypical awful woman in a BL could have been spent developing the romantic relationship between Mahiro and Sota. But at this point I'm not even mad that didn't happen because any affection between these two would have felt forced and been unpleasant to watch.
I rarely hate watch series these days, but this was the ultimate hate watch for me. I enjoyed the early episodes, but it stopped being good half way through and by the end I hated everyone except the Taiwanese grocer. This was the worst JBL I've ever seen!!!
Yechan is the best green flag ever in 2D and live action. The last 2 episodes were basically flawless. At first 8 episodes seemed short, but in the end, the first season felt complete.
If any series in 2023 deserves a second season, it's this one. I'm praying that the BL gods bless us with the conclusion of this precious story.
If you liked this series and haven't read the webtoon, do yourself a favor and read it. It's this plus chibis!!!! 🥰🥰
I feel like because Thailand has the budget... now a lot of companies are just pushing out BL's to release them…
The thing is Thailand doesn't have the budget. Thailand is not a rich country and for every company like GMMTV there are dozens with little to no money. Some companies are able to get funding through sponsors, but many of the smaller companies are making tiktok quality series with the equivalent of iphone cameras.
These companies know that the market for BL is huge in Thailand so they take chance that their series will be the next Love Mechanics or ITSAY. But most companies don't take the time to find good new actors or don't have money to afford actors as strong as YinWar or PPBK. And they also don't invest in strong writers or directors. They take lazy short cuts with the assumption that BL audiences will watch anything as long as two guys say they love each other and the story has a happy ending. Sadly, that used to be true. Fans were willing to watch pretty much anything for years. But that's not as true today as it once was and these companies haven't realized it yet. So in 2023 we're stuck with an oversaturation of crappy series and very few really good ones.
But like you said this is destroying the Thai BL industry because as fans start to tune out, even the great series suffer lower and lower views. Going for quantity over quality and ignoring that sometimes less is more, is making Thai BL worse as time goes by. Which REALLY sucks.
I know I grade Filipino BLs on a curve, mostly because there haven't been many in recent years and their budgets tend to be small. But so far this isn't awful. I like the leads and can fast forward through the parts with Louise. Also, Jericho is reason enough for me to stick with it for 6 more short episodes.
With each new bad Thai BL series it feels like the bar gets lower for what is watchable. I start every new series hoping that it won't be added to my dropped list. Unfortunately for me as soon as I saw the character I thought was a discount version of Sammy, I knew I wouldn't like this one. Once I realized it was actually Sammy I was even more checked out. She deserves sooooooo much better.
The slow line delivery, extremely amateur acting, poor directing, bland script, childish hijinks, silly sound queues and annoying side characters were enough to make me want to fast forward after less than 15 minutes. I might have tolerated this in 2017, but not today. For anyone who sticks around, I hope it gets better.
The trailer was as frustrating as the end of the first season. Minato is still behaving like an uptight nun and that's not what I want to see. Katsuki is so amazing and I really want him to be happy, so I'll to suffer through Minato's childish behavior.
The trailer gave me slight vibes of Chains of Heart and Big Dragon (two bad series) or a lesser version of Manner of Death. I hope it's better than the trailer makes it seem. I'm not watching a non con story, so I may end up dropping this quickly. But I'll watch the first episode.
I really don't understand why no one at GMMTV is focused on making Dunk a better actor. Why has no manager, producer, director or even Dunk said GIVE THIS MAN SOME ACTING CLASSES!!!???? I like Dunk and I really enjoy Joong and Dunk together, but that lack of improvement is glaring.
For me, lots of kisses doesn't make a show good. I need a plot and interesting characters. And the trailer shows me zero improvement from their Our Skyy 2 episodes and most people agree that they were the worst episodes of OS2. It's a shame because the generic plot with Dunk's subpar acting is preparing me for yet another below average Thai BL, which is becoming the standard of 2023 😮💨
This must exist because someone got a tax write off to make it. This show did not need special episodes. But surprisingly the "plot" was more coherent in these 2 episodes than it was for the series. They replaced the random kids with random sex scenes and I wish they hadn't. Much like the series, it has zero rewatch value. But I didn't hate it.
I used to get confused when shows had lower ratings on here, but most of the comments were extremely postive. But as BLs has evolved, I think audiences have too. People are pretty good at quickly figuring out if they like a series or not. And by the time series ends many people have stopped watching and only die hard fans remain to fill the message board with glowing reviews.
My advice for anyone unsure about watching this is to give it try. If you don't like it after the first few episodes, move on to something else. For better or worse it doesn't change as the story progresses.
I get that some people enjoyed the fluff, but it took me months to finish, because I found Wonyoung to be extremely irritating, he was the source of most of the problems and when the truth came out, he spent the rest of the series having a pity party for himself. Everything felt dragged out to meet the long runtime and both couples had the same conversation over and over again.
Most BLs are guaranteed to have happy endings, but when everything feels so contrived and forced to fit in perfect fairy-tale like box, that's when I check out. I'm going skip the sequel for all those reasons.
Right? I mean, he really is a coward! And we don't even know if he would have changed for Pun if Pun had stayed.…
It's only been 5 months since I watched this, but I literally don't remember what happened or the characters. All I remember is there were 2 estranged brothers and a coffee shop, lol.
