So he true love is always the wife. The last life he was torn and caused all that harm to lotus demon and then wife left him to be a nun over it all. So this life with the powers he was able to make his decision in time, before any pain.

I think his true love is the soul that was not lotus demon in the last life.The face is different this time (swapped), but he should've recognized the true love's soul from XZ awakening some powers in him. It's my interpretation; the ending for them is ambiguous in the novel, too.

Its the most romantic scene I've seen in a long time, and purely from gazing at each other, not being able to look away, sensing each other from behind. I swear he held on to her wrist and knew how fast her heart was pounding when she got shy about him in front.
