Rather than misunderstanding, I think its timing. He had a first love, married and FL fell in love with him, then FL found out he loves someone else this whole marriage, and got hurt so she emotionally broke up with him, then eventually he realize he love her, but she moved on to Su Rongqing.

He had a ex fiancee who he loved prior to marriage with FL. But he fell in love with FL during their marriage, however she left him due to him not telling her the truth before marriage, as she had fallen trustfully and got hurt. Then the timing was never right for him to fix it.

It's implied they did consummate, but the relationship may have ended super early in the marriage, within the first year.

Good chemistry, I like their bickering, they act like old couple. The pacing is good. Comedy is much much much better than The Double
