I agree with you about the pacing; I loved it from beginning to end! Although the flashbacks I admit are a bit too much, but as I enjoyed their every moment, it was good watch to me.

What I loved about the drama is that the CP is unmovable throughout the whole thing lol. She likes him, then he starts liking her, they get together and bam, its forever.

In the book, she places first in all the exams. But in the book, she takes exam alone, in this they did a team up thing, so iono what twists.

Yea he did it for moving up, and the Princess is kinda jealous and crazy and has a hold over him and would force him to remove wife eventually. His mom and sister are also goading him to rid of his wife, since they never liked her, and are both thirsty to move up in society. They'd much rather be related to royalty than a no-name small town talented lady.

I edited the previous comment to add more about the emperor having few followers, so it might explain why he wants to gain royal favor as there isnt much obstruction.

He was a humble nobody in a small town, married FL for love. He scored #1 on the Imperial Exams and got a somewhat low governmental title (Scholar), but has no money/prestigious family backing, thus unable to move up in society. He caught crazy Princess's eyes, and they started an affair behind FL's back, and he's doing it with his eye on power & title of Prince Consort (princess husband). The value here is, she's the Emperor's sister, not his daughter, so it makes him akin to a "brother" to the Emperor almost. The emperor is young and has no long-time followers, except trust in Xiao Heng, the courts divided and people are power hungry and corrupted.

So Shen Yurong had to get rid of his wife without ruining his own reputation (if he divorced, it would look bad on him); in fact got a VERY good reputation as a grieving and forgiving husband.


At the part we are at, he and Princess are underground lovers as he needs to wait the appropriate period of time to "mourn".

It follows the major plot points, with some changes. I think theyre good changes, because it adds thrill, drama, and moves the plot along faster.
