Yea he did it for moving up, and the Princess is kinda jealous and crazy and has a hold over him and would force him to remove wife eventually. His mom and sister are also goading him to rid of his wife, since they never liked her, and are both thirsty to move up in society. They'd much rather be related to royalty than a no-name small town talented lady.

I edited the previous comment to add more about the emperor having few followers, so it might explain why he wants to gain royal favor as there isnt much obstruction.

He was a humble nobody in a small town, married FL for love. He scored #1 on the Imperial Exams and got a somewhat low governmental title (Scholar), but has no money/prestigious family backing, thus unable to move up in society. He caught crazy Princess's eyes, and they started an affair behind FL's back, and he's doing it with his eye on power & title of Prince Consort (princess husband). The value here is, she's the Emperor's sister, not his daughter, so it makes him akin to a "brother" to the Emperor almost. The emperor is young and has no long-time followers, except trust in Xiao Heng, the courts divided and people are power hungry and corrupted.
