Introduce the ML → introduce the other key characters → small missions and subplots build chemistry, tension,…
Ending will be a setup for season 2 that will never happen. 🙃

I have high hopes since it’s the same writer as for The Devil Judge. I know it’s not the same genre but I’m hoping the skill will be the same! 👏

Some things here are a stretch, I know. The obvious truth is that this was a setup for a possible season 2. But I did my best to patch this up to give myself closure for the show I otherwise really loved for its mix of gothic atmosphere, amateur spy vibes and secret organizations subplots. It felt unrealistic, but I loved how that made it feel like escapism and a different genre from the usual mystery/thriller dramas.

I rechecked the last two episodes to track chronology of parallel events and this is what I read into it. So,…
Hye Seo first wanted to take Haesong from Hunjo as revenge, but along the way realized it would fill the void in her life so just went for it fully. So we have her betray SIH to team leader Lee. (And also because she doesn’t trust Woo Shin that SIH can beat Lee.) Lee then learns from the mole about SIH hideout and sends A team to ambush them first instead. He also informs Hye Seo off screen. She is at the funeral hall waiting to hear the news how team A killed off SIH and hopefully stole Adamas (it would help her win over the shareholders. Remember Kwon said the symbolism of it helped him too.) But alas, she sees on the news how Team A got busted instead. So she loses her enforcers and also has to deal with Hunjo’s threats and getting Sun to kill Hunjo and not herself.

The first logical move after that would be to call team leader Lee and see what’s the status now that they lost team A, at which point he tells her Soo Hyeon showed up and he‘s about to get rid of him, but she tells him they need him as insurance/plan B (after all, Lee would value his own survival over revenge.) Hye Seo instructs him to take Soo Hyeon to the ship and also arranges for that crooked doctor to go there (the one who works for team A and treated the reporter when she was captured). She needs to buy time until she deals with Hunjo.

Which might be why we learn the letter to Woo Shin’s arrived later when Hunjo is near killed by Sun and Hye Seo effectively takes over the company. *Hye Seo also knows about Woo Shin’s GPS and could remember to tell Lee to check Soo Hyeon’s left hand too, just in case. Notice we saw Lee return from the ship late at night. There is a time gap in which he might have escorted the doctor to Soo Hyeon’s location at sea. Lee is also not a psychotic type, so when’s he’s hella amused and laughing while taunting Woo Shin about his brother’s death, his precise amusement is what tells me he’s lying.

Team leader Lee who’s now been caught patiently waits for further instructions. Lee is to be transferred to prosecution and supposedly allowed to escape (but really killed). However after Woo Shin brings Adamas, he asks to let Lee stand trial. Which is why we get that scene with the van and Sun - it’s Hye Seo sneakily and simultaneously honoring her deal with both of them.

When Woo Shin meets Hye Seo, the first thing she tells him is she’s “sorry for what happened to his brother”. The vague wording made me wonder if she’s apologizing for the kidnapping without risking getting herself implicated. He later tells her they will meet again because he doesn’t intend to let her go unpunished. I do feel this is a stretch but they’re both coolheaded calculating types and he‘d be aware she’d be careful not to implicate herself - after all he already tricked her and recorded her words once. So perhaps their talk has a few double meanings. From this scene onward Woo Shin’s demeanor is more relaxed and determined so that made me think he already read the letter.

When Woo Shin asks if he can trust her, he could also be asking about his brother. He brought her the fake Adamas since it was safest to keep the real one just in case.

Presumably now he has to wait to get his brother back. He gets the idea to write the book, talks to the reporter, and when he returns perhaps he gets the location and time and rushes off to pick up Soo Hyeon.

Some things I Noticed Watching:-Almost every rule-breaker smokes: Ara, Dongho’s dad, Siwon… even Mansu picks…
That’s interesting about the snakes! What do you make of it? Is it synbolism that Beom-mo was surrounded by snakes?

I found unnerving the detail with the AI at the end. We recall how there was a PR clip on how so much of the paper is recycled and doesn’t cause deforestation.

Then it ends with the clips of him all alone and dodging the machines, and machines cutting down forests and it’s like man = plant here, both being cut down by the merciless chase after profit.

I watched this but MDL doesn’t let me add it as completed 😆

Anyway I found it very entertaining, I can’t say why without spoiling but safe to say that this movie has stellar cast and it shows. The idea was also fresh and the direction and soundtrack made it all the more fun.

Mature writing, realistically flawed characters, some good life lessons to be found in this one…

One of the things that bothered me (and many others from what I've seen) the most is the fact that he didn't seem…
His parents run their eatery in Daejeon, which seems to be quite far from Seoul on the map (lol I was curious now), so I guess that’s why they’re out of the picture. I ‘d also enjoy a scene with them to contrast the Hye Won marriage.

Oh wow, this was much better than I expected! A little naughty, a little realistic, fresh, well-paced, and funny. Characters were flawed but likable, and overall I found it charming.
