its been quite a while since there was a good wuxia, recent condor heroes from tsui hark was a let down, last…
Relax mate. It's Wu Jing. This movie is already guaranteed +500 million USD at the China Box Office before we even get a trailer! Wu Jing is such a BIG box office puller unlike Xiao Zhan... Which means the movie has to actually be good to make full use of casting Wu Jing (or rather I don't think Wu Jing would have signed up if he thought the script or screenplay sucked)!
TBH I would have skipped this film if not for Wu Jing. I'm not a Jet Li fan. I don't care for his movies. And Woo Ping, I already seen his best work in The Matrix.
IMO Wu Jing is better than Jackie Chan and way better than Jet Li. He encompasses both Jackie's aloof nature and the ability to get serious and kick some REAL arse like Jet.
Poor Jet Li though, this might be his first (and last) movie that makes a HUGE splash at the box office solely relying on Wu Jing's star power. And also poor Jackie, this movie alone might dethrone him as the highest Kung Fu/Wuxia grossing movie shown in China.
My experience watching Douluo Continent... The drama only made sense after I've watched the donghua. I have all 30 eps of this drama in 4K on my HDD. BUT I'll go source the "anime" and watch that first!
A question from an amateur (please don't stone me 😁): Why does an immortal master die? Isn't it a bit contradictory?
I guess you don't watch a lot of Chinese fantasy dramas. There are usually three types of beings: 1. Mortal, 2. Immortal, 3. God. An Immortal dies because they're only slightly better than mortal and haven't yet obtained God-hood!
Personally, I wouldn't want to repeat the Joy of Life experience. When the S2 was released, I had almost forgotten what happened in the S1. I didn't know/remember the cyborg had killed the FL's brother. That was how bad it got!
I think I'll just hoard the "S1" of Immortal Ascension on my HDD (as a 4K/60fps version), then go all out and binge watch when all the seasons have concluded. JoL 1/2/3 proved it was no fun to watch the sequel many years later!
Season 2 (episode 43+) of the donghua was just released.
Seems to be a low quality rush job to ride the momentum of the live action drama.
They used the same OP/ED songs (too cheap to hire singers to compose new songs) and the CGI models don't look quite as nice as the S1. End credit also leaves much to be desired -- it's just a single hand-painted scene with photoshop cape flapping, whereas the S1 ED was a complete 3D CGI sequence!
Will there be a S2? I highly doubt they can "do it all" in 30 eps. I hate to start watching this drama and get to ep 30, then find out there is no closure until the S2...
I just finished and I want to know what happens next. Does anyone know if this second season's plot and storyline…
It follows the donghua down to a tee. Tangsan just stepped foot onto Sea God Island. You should be able to follow the rest of the story by watching the donghua. Sea God Island arc begins after episode 100, I forgot which one, but they did travel in a submarine before getting to the island like in the live action drama...
Alas, movie seems to be suffering the same Jin Yong-litis fate as the Xiao Zhan LoCH movie... low douban score! Too bad (or too good for us viewers) it's too late for investors to back out as the subsequent parts have already been filmed!
I have the LoCH movie in 4K on my hard drive. I'm never gonna watch it. I'm not a LoCH guy. On the other hand I eagerly await part 2 of RoCH. I'm glad Hark Tsui abandoned his version of RoCH movie half way to make room for LoCH. I'm not a Hark Tsui fan, and it wouldn't have been as enjoyable as this RoCH movie we got instead!
(PS: The LoCH movie is really 4.7 instead of 5.2. The tally is based on many fake AI generated rosy reviews by crazed fan-boiz that give it a perfect 10/10, so in the end it's real score around the same as RoCH).
The actress that plays Li Mo Chou is famous for her nice smile. There are only two actresses with nice smiles in C-ent, her and Zhao Lusi. Whenever they cast this actress, her role always brings a pleasant atmosphere to the work!
His hairstyle changed. I agree he looked like a different actor, but no only his hair style changed when he went…
Could also be he wanted to show respect to Sea God Island by looking more formal and scholarly, like someone about to undertake a difficult college exam. This might explain why he only changed his appearance on setting foot on the island and not before.
I like the actress that played Huang Rong. She must have been an exceptional beauty when she was younger. She seems to be involved in every type of projects: As a villain in Jin Yong's Fox Volant the 1 part movie version. As a teacher in Douluo Continent: Land of Warriors... She seems so natural as Huang Rong becoz this not the first time she appeared in an acclaimed JIn Yong movie!
Do you know I only found out about this movie months after it was released? It was only my luck someone was still sharing the 4K version. You know how it goes, in China things get stale really really fast, so ppl stop sharing stuff a few weeks after the air date. Unlike West where you can find seeders of an anime series years after the last episode had aired. It's notoriously difficult to source anything from China after the first few weeks.
I want to immediately grab the 4k version on release this time. So spill when is the part II coming out?
Out of all the adaptations of The Condor Heroes that I have watched, this portrayal of Long Nu is my favorite.…
This movie made all the previous ones made by ZJZ and Yu Zheng look like turd in comparison.
Did you know the original author actually wished the Mainland China would make a good adaptation of his works (he probably thought the Hong Kong adaptations could have been much better).
Maybe he watching from Heaven this movie adaptation from Mainland China (the kind of quality that he always wanted) now got made!
The TVB one in 1983 had good casting but cheesy effects though. The first girl I had a crush on looked exactly like the 1983 Dragon Lady. But she was Italian not Chinese. We were classmates at 13 -14y/o in grades 7+8. The ML met the FL when he was only 13 yo as per the original story. Coincidence?
When the Dragon Lady rested her head on Yang Guo's chest and smiled in the title sequence of each episode in the 1983 TVB series, God cloned her into an Italian and made her my classmate in grades 7+8. The ressemblance between her and my classmate was just too striking even down to the way they smiled... What's even weirder is do you know the emblem of my school in grade 7+8? It was an American bald eagle not much different than the Giant Condor!
I thought this was an okay iteration but was the RAPE necessary for the story? I don't get it, showing a loser…
They're only adapting a work written in 1960's where the rape is an essential part of the story. The rape serves 2 purposes:
1. Sex is not love. You can buy sex with money (hookers), but love cannot be bought. Remember this is China's Romeo & Juliet. The author wants to make poetic distinction between sex & love.
2. The girl would never have followed / clung to the ML if it weren't for the oxytocin in her body released by blindfolded sex with the rapist. Oxytocin is an attachment hormone. The FL became more attached / clingy to the ML after the mistaken rape.
I'VE BEEN DUPED. Becoz of the low rating, we're NEVER gonna get another season. On the other hand I think it was a clever marketing ploy.
Despite Soul Land being the MOST popular ever the MOST watched anime series in all of Mainland China...
There are some youths in China who just grew up and never seen Soul Land the anime before. I think this drama was made especially for these ppl as a sort of intro series into this IP, leave them wanting for more with a cliffhanger ending so they'd go and watch the anime series to finish the story...
