Excited since it’s about to end and I can finally binge one of my fav novel adaptions but skeptical since I…
I see high ratings on chinese sites, for example on douban it's a 7.2 which is very high for that site (for costume drama), whereas an 8.4 is actually relatively average rating here.
This drama is my guilty pleasure: melodrama, angst, romance, tragedy, revenge and with the right cliches, e.g. memory loss. I suppose expected from this author, but sometimes great stories don't need to step outside the box, they can be conventional and even cheesy, yet still very good. I have to admit I don't like lies/betrayal, especially between male and female lead in a romance, so it's hard to support the 2 leads, but for those looking for an emotional rollercoaster, this might not be a bad thing.
This drama had a lot going for it, complex themes and characters but it became too repetitive and wasn't able to bring everything together in the end.
The best part about the drama was the relationship between the female lead and the empress. The friendship between the female lead and the empress is possibly the only drama friendship I'd call as deep and genuine as the bromance found in "Nirvana In Fire", which is no easy feat. Too bad this relationship didn't last. I won't explain why or it would become a spoiler.
I couldn't get into the Reply dramas but really enjoyed this one, I can't tell if the lack of comedy tag did the trick or I preferred this cast. It was cute while remaining serious. Characters felt realistic with all their dilemmas and imperfections. The plot wasn't anything too special but it had good intentions, especially the story surrounding the second leads. Some people criticize Jung Hee but I think it was part of character development, the whole point was for her to be immature/hypocritical but grow out of it, which she did.
Sorry, revenge is just a very small part of this grand story, it is like an introduction. I would suggest you…
Nirvana in Fire (the drama) still seems much better than Ever Night, whether it be the cinematography, story coherence - maybe the novel is different. Another main differentiator might be the main character, Ning Que simply isn't as convincing as Mei Changsu. Maybe it's the actors and not the characters, whatever the case it feels like there's something lacking in Ever Night. So far it feels very wholesome, but almost to a fault.
This is both epic and subtle at the same time, and that's hard to pull off. It also has something for everybody to enjoy.
However, in latest episodes it seems to be making Ning Que to be deeper than he actually is, both the story and the characters interacting with him. Or rather, the depth of his character came quite abruptly because it seemed like he was just a boy out for revenge before. Character development is fine but it needs to occur more gradually and make more sense.
I feel the same, I tried other dramas but I don't feel anything, everything it's so plain compared to them.
Phew, I thought I was the only one. I think they are both very skilled at acting but I'm just not sold on it. There is something missing, like there is a lack of authenticity/heart in their acting. Either that or we are just biased haha.
Define "epic"? Based on the comments here people who are watching love and addict to it.
Does the story depict an grand/epic adventure? Is the plot straightforward, or feel telegraphed? Is it action-oriented. It's not something I particularly dislike but becomes a problem when it is the only characteristic of a story.
As an example, the MDL trailer makes this look very epic.
Yang mi has such a huge amount of anti-fans there that they just give out 1/5 rating to no matter what drama she…
Yes, might be worth waiting till it finishes airing to get a more reliable rating, cuz right now this is worse than other Yang Mi dramas. Am I the only that thinks the MDL trailer looks really bad? Mindless action, and makes the characters seem one-dimensional.
You mean Douban who filled with water army that hate on YM as chinese reviews? The drama reaction and online views…
I'm aware of that, but this still pales in comparison is to Eternal Love. Of course, this is still airing so maybe rating will go up a lot once it's finished.
