Great review. I agree on so many things and that's why I dropped it. It was just poor script, nonsensical writing, poor direction and YYS was the only one acting and even he felt stiff. The spiciness was not enough for me for this trash cause I can just watch the hot scenes on YT without wasting my time. Upvoted
So, I am finally done with Fangs of Fortune and all I can say is, if trust the process was a drama this would be it.
It started shaky and ended up being one of the best epic fantasy C dramas ever.
Ugh so many tears, so much heartache and the TRAGIC beauty coupled with BROMANCE galore - I am literally fanning myself.
Anyway, this was great. I wanna rate it less because Wen Xiao remained useless till the last episode but how can you rate something like this less than a 9? I mean, any drama that has the power to have me sobbing like a writhing worm on a wet leaf deserves my respect.
I know I am too late for this one but if someone is still interested in my detailed analysis of the show and the characters, here’s the review for you:
If all of you are right and this is supposed to be a BL drama and those few female characters were added just…
The other female lead, Pei Si Jing, absolutely SLAPS. She is great. The reason why people are saying it might as well be a BL is because of the intense bromance. But it isn't a BL. Officially, it's only brotherhood and friendship because one of the MLs is already paired with the FL. I am not romantically shipping the MLs and I am still absolutely invested in their bond.
If all of you are right and this is supposed to be a BL drama and those few female characters were added just…
It is not a BL, was not marketed as a BL drama nor was it originally supposed to be a BL (not that I know of), it's only after you analyze the FL's character, does it feel like there may be some calculated and deliberate creative choices at play. Yes, it's a logical analysis, given GJM's past work, but the existence of this analysis itself is an effect of the poor character development of the FL and not the cause.
I understand your concern and opinion however if we look at each character that way, we would be holding a protest…
I agree that this is an ensemble drama with shared screentime, only that the other characters are being done justice with dedicated episodes outlining their motivations, backstories, flaws and complications while WX simply isn't. She stands out pointedly because of how much she isn't standing out. But I understand your reasoning and that you like her as a character. You're entitled to your opinion and tastes, as am I. <3
It’s interesting that you feel that way. Perhaps it’s because you’ve recently seen mostly positive comments,…
First of all, thanks for stating your POV in a mature and respectful manner. I can always appreciate people who don't take a critique on their favorite character as a personal attack on themselves.
Unfortunately, there definitely has been antagonism shown towards people who hold a different viewpoint towards this character. If you haven't seen it, it does not mean it doesn't exist. I have obviously made this post after experiencing it myself.
That said, I understand your POV. I also understand what on paper, her character is supposed to stand for. That she is supposed to be the one person who looks at others with unrestrained empathy, a bridge between two sides, if you will. My only gripe is, it's poorly executed and there's just not much focus on developing and writing her as an individual like it is on the rest of the squad.
Still, do I want her to have more of a presence? Yes. Am I hoping, there is more impact from her in the following episodes? Also Yes. So, there's that.
I don't know what I should comment about episode 26, but the love story between Zhao Yuan Zhou and Zhuo Yi Chen…
Beautiful comment. I felt the same and picked on all the same things. Both of their eyes spoke volumes. The sheer desperate will to save one another was just *chefs kiss* These two feel like soul mates and I say that as someone who doesn't ship them romantically at all.
I just know I am getting cancelled for this but since that has never scared me and every one is free to share their personal opinions, I’ll share mine.
The fact that you can’t say anything about Wen Xiao as a character because it automatically makes you a “hater, or you must be a BL shipper or you must hate women” is just absolutely ridiculous.
Since there is already so much love for her in this section, I’ll give my unpopular opinion and that is that: Wen Xiao is an underdeveloped character whose main job is to wax out poetic and flowery dialogues and cry atleast 49473993 times per episode.
There’s nothing wrong with being physically weak and having subtle strength, nor is there anything wrong with being all heart but honestly, Wen Xiao feels like a Mary sue character that’s definitely used as a shield to get through censorship by GJM who has been frequently ostracised for his BL undertones in dramas. It is what it is.
So, Wen Xiao’s character feels purposefully diluted as a creative choice by the writer. She’s not given any of the impactful scenes, her romance arc is little more than a subplot and she’s supposed to take a backseat to the bromance which is obviously more thoughtfully written.
While all the other members of the squad have their own flavouring, back stories and growth, Wen Xiao is stuck in the box labelled as “pretty pure lady who can do no wrong” and is responsible solely for the visuals in the story.
While all the characters have seen significant growth as the episodes go by, she is still exactly the same as she was in episode 1.
I understand that she is very loved and defended by people here and it’s fine. Boos should do their yous but my take on her character is my own personal opinion.
She had an excellent start but since then, she has just been simmering in a pool of mediocrity and wasted potential. 🤷♀️
GJM is guilty of doing that to his FLs as he highlights the other members of the ensemble and that’s just the play of the day.
i too love the bromance between zyc and zy as much as every other person in the comments here but i notice that…
Nope, I don’t care for gay ships and have barely watched any BLs. Their bromance and friendship is just better written than Wen Xiao as a character but nice try. 🤷♀️

P.S The hot Gege trifecta alone is enough for me to rate this a 9/10 cause GOD WTF 🥵🥵
Meanwhile, I am trying to dodge spoilers like my boi Li Lun dodges emotional maturity. 🫡💃💃💃
