Yeah, it set up the characters quickly, and the plot is already moving along. I was sure it would be 6 episodes before she saw his face but nope here we are.

NAHHH this is ridiculous Hwang Min Hyun gets criticised for stiff acting by Korean netizens 😭
It seems important to you that he is thought of as a bad actor

It's amazing cause when that happens you wonder how the huge hole will be filled. But by the end you come to know and love all the others so much

The acting, the comedy, the sexual tension, the script--those are the things people, like me, liked about it.
Yes. :)

Sooo.. IDK anything about Hwan Min Hyun but he specifically stood out to me in AoS because even though it was a reserved and emotionally controlled character, he was able to clearly portray even complex and conflicting feelings and thoughts with little dialogue or overt expressions, which is not easy to do. So I noted him as someone to watch in the future. I had no idea everyone thought he sucked lol.

He reminds me of Seo Kang Joon in the way he's able to portray a gentle vulnerability that is difficult to capture for a lot of actors. Meaning that he can be intense while also being subdued. That is not something a wooden actor can remotely portray even in a reserved character. Also he has great voice control (reminds me of Jang Ki Yong) and strong screen presence.

So I really don't understand why people are saying he's bad. He's an inexperienced actor, sure, but he is not a bad actor at all, and is in fact quite promising to me.

I think he's done great in the first two episodes and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with this role.

Title Mr. Queen
For me Mr. Queen (2020) is far from being in my top 5 dramas – I don't even know if I think it's better or the…
No way. Kim Jung Hyun has some of the best comedic timing in the industry and can deliver just as well on the emotional scenes. I am hard pressed to think of another actor who could have played that part as well as he did.

I quite like KYD, the male lead, but think he was out of his element in the more challenging scenes. He just did not deliver the emotional gravitas needed for the King's trauma, his performance there felt very shallow, and it really took me out of the show in those parts. But he is very good at the smoldering romance-y stuff, and has fantastic comedic timing, and natural charisma and strong chemistry with the FL. He also has the ability to portray this sort of gentle-souled vulnerability that I don't see in ML's--he's been able to bring it to many roles and I appreciate him for that.

I loved the FL, her acting was perfect, and I loved that she was so much more than just the ML's love interest. She lived life for herself and by her own values, and that is shockingly rare in K drama.

The side characters were a hoot. And the plot was interesting enough to keep my attention over the course of the drama.

Overall it's a fun and funny drama that has some depth, too.

The only reason to watch this is for the first 6 eps, which were great (the show unravels slowly and painfully after that) and to watch the role that made LJW a household name in k drama. He was essentially unknown when this came out, and even though we hated the character he was just so damn captivating-- this rookie actor managed to turn one of the most one note characters into the most engaging in the show. I will always think fondly of this show for that alone

I binged the show quickly so it seemed more cohesive to me . But it was still so confusing to think they're enemies, to finding out they're kinda friends, to finding out he has a crush, to him having been her first love, to them having both liked each other since they first met. I do'nt see the point of revealing that so slowly and in such a jarring way. It was like we watched 6 different versions of the same couple over the course of the first half of the drama. Once they got together they were suddenly different people and super cutesy and in love when they'd both shown very strong avoidant tendencies which was also weird. The nonlinear narrative was too ambitious.

Also, the storylines that resonated most were his mother and the friend, so I dont' know why they needed all those weird stalker/revenge plotlines either.

I also agree that the writing at times seemed quite good within scenes, but struggles with the overall development and flow of the drama.

I did think both the lead's comedic timing was fantasitc, and the best part of show for me (along with the comedic timing of the other actors in support roles). I disagree with you that they didn't have romantic chemistry. I thought they were cute as a couple and at least it was consistently immature from the beginning lol.

Despite agreeing with a lot of what you said, I definitely liked the drama overall better than you, I was able to enjoy the comedy and romance and just kinda enjoy the ride, found it a really funny and fun light watch.

Good review, you hit a lot of the major points well. I haven't watched a drama like this in a while and it hit all those sweet spots for your typical guilty pleasure drama.

I agree on KYD. He's an odd one, cause he has charm and great screen presence and does the swoony and other intense scenes well, and his comedic timing is gold, but he seems to really struggle when more subtle emotions are required and overacts in a silly way. I felt the same with him in Forbidden Marriage, he was lacking the emotional gravitas needed to pull off some of the more challenging scenes in that show (It was a difficult role playing a traumatized king, and it was way above his capabilities). I quite like him even so, and do think he has that IT factor, so I hope to see him improve in those areas.

I felt the opposite about the 2nd couple! I wanted to FF through their scenes cause they were boring to me and I didn't feel much chemistry apart from colleagues, it kinda felt like brother and sister dating, and I found the girl kinda annoying by the end--she didn't have much depth as a character. I found the main couple 10X more interesting and their chemistry was FIRE.

Thanks for the detailed review!

I loved this from start to finish! This is not a perfect drama by any means and the plot was all over the place, but it was funny, sometimes laugh out loud funny, and fun and romantic. The leads have great chemistry but also fantastic comedic timing. They play off eachother amazingly well and they both have this quirky, charming way about them that is delightful. I binged it in 3 days and quite enjoyed myself

I was intrigued when I saw the description but then seeing Namkoong Min as the lead I am so excited--he will KILL in this role. No one does playful but intense like him.

Gong Hyo Jin is a goddess and I would watch her read the newspaper, she absolutely oozes charisma and appeal and her acting is superb. I have seen her paired with men older and younger and she has amazing chemistry every time. LMH is hit or miss for me, but when he hits, he HITS and can have fantastic screen presence. I can see him having excellent chemistry with GHJ. I feel like this is gonna be the -IT- drama of the year.

I've never been able to connect with Ahn Hyo Seop, I've tried watching so many of his dramas but I just do not feel his characters, something always falls flat for me and I end up dropping the drama. So I'mma give this one ep and if he's still lacking I will go watch the OG lol.
