I respectfully disagree with the person below me about Chinese dramas. The Chinese do way better job with strong…
I find the exact same thing in Korean historical/fantasy dramas as you say you do in C dramas. Some that are popular have weak FLs but a TON of them have amazing FLs. You mentioned like 3 k dramas and that's supposed to somehow be a full picture?
Also, what are you counting as a strong FL? It's way easier to show overt strength when it's a fantasy setting (as a lot of C dramas are) but that doesn't mean that a woman who worked to find power within the confines of an actual historical patriarchal society is any way less strong or independent.
I hate the idea that a woman has to be a fighter or physically strong to be "strong" and "independent". In Alchemy of Souls, the FL lost her magical powers but she was fiercely independent, fought for herself at every turn, had a brilliant mind and was a loyal and amazing mentor and friend. So how is she weak?
Here's some historical dramas with strong FLs
The Crowned Clown The Red Sleeve Empress Ki King's Affection Queen for 7 Days Saimdang Six flying dragons Shine or go crazy Tree with Deep Roots Princess's man Dong Yi Chuno Arthdal Chronicles Bridal Mask Mr. Queen My Sassy Girl Queen Seondok Goddess of Fire Splish SPlash love Jewel in the palace
I don't have time to list more but that's just off the top of my head.
I really don't get this weird C drama vs K drama competition. Let's judge a show by its own merits rather than needing to posture in this weird way.
I’m 4 eps in and I like it a lot! I really like the main actor. He does so well portraying the pain and intensity just below his frivolous facade. Idk there’s just something about him? I’m already a fan and wondering what else he’s in. So excited to keep watching!
I got so into C dramas a while back but got burned out and haven't watched one in years. And I've been waiting for a really good one to get back into them again -- so I'm hoping this is as good as everyone is saying! Starting it now....
I love the sound of KYD's voice, it's gentle but strong. I find PYJ just so lovely, she's breathtaking to me, something about her! I think they'll have great chemistry.
For those accusing the male lead of cheating? Are we all watching the same drama? He broke up with that chick…
YES THANK YOU. I don't get why everyone is clutching onto their pearls like a life raft. He was put in the weirdest situation ever-- he drank a magical love potion for god's sake (I know they think it didn't work , but it def worked in some way--even to just super enhance the affection he already was starting to feel). He didn't go out and try and purposely cheat, his relationship with NY wasn't making either of them very happy anyway, and he tried many times to break up with her and she didn't even care that much herself when she found out. If you look moment to moment, I can understand why he made the choices he did when faced with such an overwhelmingly odd situation, not only with the FL, but his relationship with his GF was very odd, too. His heart and mind were literally at war.
People need to allow characters to be human beings and look at their actions with a bit of nuance.
Well, Roowon was good in "She Would Never Know" but in Destined with You - not too good. You are right - choose…
Yes, Matchmakers is what I'm worried about! I'm not worried about him in the role, more worried that the show won't be good so he won't get any attention from it. I haven't seen She Would Never Know--I'll check it out. I've only seen him in King's Affection and thought he did very well there, but he's doing even better in Destined. (It's a shame you don't watch historical cause King's Affection was fantastic).
I respect that he said that--people talk about pretty privilege, but I'm sure it must be hard to feel like you are constantly having to prove you're more than just a pretty face (even to himself). He is one of those actors I would never have guessed was an idol, and I put him in the company of Junho and Kyungsoo (Rowoon isn't as experienced as them but def has just as much talent)
This director is fantastic, the writer is good and sometimes great. And so far the acting lineup is aces. Love the unique premise, also. Def keeping an eye on this one.
I hate to say it, cause I was one of the ones who defended him, but I've come to realize MinHyun isn't subtle he's just wooden in his acting. I do still think he has a special charm to him and enjoyed the gentleness of his character, but while watching the BTS especially MH emoted and showed all these different sides and it made DH seem even more cardboard. I really like KSH but she plays the same type of character in every drama--the no-nonsense, pragmatic, somewhat aloof, caring but not quite warm character.
This show was sweet and inoffensive. I appreciated a lot about it, and will still keep an eye on MH in the future, cause damn, I still feel like he's got some sort of charisma about him and I wanna give him a chance to grow a little. I won't remember this drama in a few months but enjoyed watching it.
When I saw the thumbnail with these two actors my first thought was "OH SPICY." I think they'll have great chemistry. They can both be very breezy and charming in one breath and very intense in the next. And they both have strong comedic timing. This looks like a great pairing to me.
Hong sister dramas are always a mess but also always hilarious and kooky and memorable, so I'm in.

Also he has so many shades and sides of his acting. He can play any role. He needs a huge hit to really cement himself as a star.
