I started my journey into dramaland with doramas. One of my first (if not the first because I can't remember exactly) was 1 Litre no Namida and it captured me because it's quite sad and based on a real story.
Hana Yori Dango and Itazura na Kiss are based on manga that have been released in the 90s which has been a prosperous time for manga and anime. Many of the titles that were released in the 80s and 90s are considered classics today (for example Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Pokemon) and have been given lots of adaptions since then. Studio Ghibli famous for movies like Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro was even nominated for an Oscar 1997 (Princess Mononoke).
I'm not too familiar with Japanese history and can't say how accurate JIN is in displaying it, but the drama does include a historical real person "Sakamoto Ryoma" and also addresses historical events as the main protagonist who is transported back into Edo period is worried of changing the future with his actions. Just thought I should mention this. ^^
Thank you Cho Na for this lovely article. It made me feel nostalgic and reminded me why I love doramas. They definitely deserve more love and watchers.
For me, the first decision on whether to watch the drama or not is made by reading the synopsis and the trailer.…
Fully agree to your comment. We can't see how good or bad a drama is from the outside so it's good to always give it a try and see for ourselves. If you have actors/actresses that make every drama worthwhile they are into, that's great though. A true benefit I can say from own experience. :) At the end of the day we all have our ways to find good dramas to watch and deciding whether to watch or not. I'm really happy, that you liked my compilation of criteria and methods. ^.^
After two episodes my drama slump striked again but today I finished the drama. Thank you for recommending it to me. It was indeed a good drama. Dark-themed and addressing serious things but nonetheless funny at the right times, not to mention that it managed to have depth despite being only 8 episodes long. That's something some 24-episode long dramas don't achieve. xD I loved the cartoon edits. When they showed an empty cage and a cartoon bird with a question mark to indicate it was lost I laughed so hard. Those elements were perfectly embedded. I'll definitely look out for more of Vivienne Tien and Leon Leong. Be Yourself was already in my watchlist. ^^
I sort of lost interest in Lovers in the Red Sky after it started airing and I've seen the first couple videos about it. Rookie Historian has low priority so I postponed it to sometime later but Qing Luo does look nice and worth trying out. I'll watch Be My Cat next which has been on my watchlist already, a rom-com C-drama with historical setting. ^^
"I'm actually glad that the protagonists are not flying in the air" hahaha... That's quite an opposite view as…
I like historical dramas more for their settings and costumes. I agree though that "flying" is acceptable when it's done right. What I don't buy though is when the protagonists stay in the air on one spot like a helicopter. That's just ridiculous. xD
Indeed, it took me almost 20 episodes but then I was hooked to TLB. Word of Honor was also a drama I binge watched. I think I'll watch The Rebel somewhere in November or December. Right now I'm in need of something more lighthearted. ^^
Your conclusion speaks from my heart. I disliked Eternal Love so much after completing it. Despite it's high rating and huge amount of people who love it, I only found it disappointing. The exact opposite was The Untamed. I decided to watch it with caution because my experience is usually that mainstream dramas, books and such just don't work for me. The Untamed became a favorite of mine immediately though. ^^ I also enjoy Republican Era dramas since I like the vintage setting and I'm actually glad that the protagonists are not flying in the air. xD From the top 10's I only have a few I liked (for example The Long Ballad) and a couple I plan to watch. The rest is not interesting for me but that's okay, there are so many great dramas out there that are more to my liking. xD
You put so much work in this list....It's awesome and very useful :)) Tnx ♥️
Those links were previously on my profile but since I lack space there I made this list. ^^' I was a bit worried if the list is easy to navigate so your comment helped me a lot in feeling assured. Thanks, dear. *hugs*
Happy you where happy☺. While researching this article it looked less and less plausible but oh what a shame,…
Yeah sadly it's unlikely, recently I've been saying goodbye for good to some dramas I had hoped would be released one day. After 3 years I'm tired of waiting and now they are collected on a list, so when the miracle happens, I'll notice it. xD
I was so happy to see this article on the front page. :D My first drama with Park Min Young was Time Slip Dr. Jin but personally I think the original Japanese adaption is better, even though it's true that she looks beautiful in hanbok and more of that would be greatly appreciated. :) In Healer she truly enchanted me and since then she's been on my favorites list. Still have a lot of her dramas on my watchlist and hope that Braveness of the Ming will get released. It would be such a waste if it's kept in the shelf.
They replaced PMY? I was only going to watch it because she was the FL. What a shame.
After the scandal about Zhang Zhe Han and him being banned it doesn't really matter. This will not air anyway. But yeah, they would've made a nice couple on screen I think.
Hey it's been a while not seeing you. Yeah, I think that is the hope for practically every Cdramas that they don't…
No problem. Thank you for the recommendation and notice to your recap article! I'll go and watch it tomorrow and will also read your article then. First need to check why my internet got so slow suddenly, this morning it was fine and now even the drama covers won't load properly. ^^'

- A Long Way Down (English Movie)
