The Princess's Gambit Episode 20

Here the princess is in a delicate spot. She is in the crucible of two nation’s plotting and her survival skills are kicked in maxed level. In this scenario she thinks she is sacrificing her place with chancellor, but I think she will find that is not the case. Her bodyguard is in the most dangerous spot for a servant. She is far more subtle than sis, but her mouth is often on a par when angered. I don’t see things going well with her in this environment. She and chancellor know the prince has the antidote. Her meal to the chancellor😂 that was the one light spot in this episode. The third Prince, there is such an insidious essence about his character. He uses the ex wife’s name and the wife to taunt the chancellor. His contempt that the chancellor has feelings for her. Funny how either third prince’s love or hero worship of the visiting empress leaves a surprisingly similar look on his face. Even snakes can be devoted. I liked him so much in another drama, so for him to be so vile here is rather unnerving. I deducted a star for the time warped brother. So I went back and checked, there was only supposed to be a 3 yr gap between siblings. However, the actor of him older was 10 years older and looked it. So the first child was too young and why most of us thought a greater age gap between them. The one grown was actually correct, but I didn’t think so based on the first episode. We did not learn the actual age gap til 20 episodes later. Many are dropping this because of the inconsistencies and poor judgment calls of the writer. That is fair. But in spite of the flaws, I find myself wanting to see how our princess and chancellor fare for the duration. The one thing the author did accomplish, was to create characters I really like and really loathe. For better or worse I want to know what happens to them.

Once again psycho prince refuses to restrain himself. He also arrogantly wants to present his good deed to Meng so he chooses to not inform him prior but to celebrate after the fact. The chancellor has baited him by letting him know the rescued miners are close and quite confident the prince will retaliate. As expected, soldiers come planning to do a quick slaughter and leave. They find, however, that the chancellor has other plans for them. As they round up the prince’s guards they signal the camp that something important is amiss and the emperor is forced to respond. He and Meng patriarch had a meeting at beginning of episode. They expect to continue forward with their plans and grow as a united family. Tonight’s events altered that course, but apparently did not keep it from moving forward. The chancellor goes in with his report and the emperor has all the rote responses of deposing the crown prince. What he did not completely anticipate was being directly questioned in court as to the punishment of the Meng family. It was clear he considered the matter closed and just as clear that the chancellor did not. Here is where we see where psycho prince got some of his mannerisms. They were much more restrained, but the hate and contempt on his face towards chancellor and his question was very plain. As he thinks about it the Meng patriarch takes things into his own hands. His son knew when the crown prince wanted the celebratory toast that his life was over. For the first time he allowed his contempt for the prince’s actions to be much clearer. Even then the prince had it barely dawn on him that he had lost his way to the thrown. He failed to see that he had successfully brought about the death of the one person willing to put up with him and even like him. The thoughtfulness of his last letter to sister and his final request to his father. He was a very good son to the end. I was actually surprised that the father allowed some sentiment in the visit. But, like all power seeking politicians, he did not hesitate to sacrifice his own son for family position. The daughter has to be even more unsure of her place now. The father assigned both of his children horrid tasks. But for all his hate of the chancellor, he treated the daughter better. His son was stuck covering for a feckless coward that cost him his life. I would like it to haunt both fathers for awhile but they are already deciding their next course of action. Both of these fathers despise the chancellor and would be a lot more active if they knew who he really was. The chancellor is angry his plan was thwarted in booting Meng family from court. But, as he said to his aide, he is only as sharp a blade as the emperor allows. He now knows the degree the Mengs and emperor are aligned so that is at least more intel. He too is devising his next course of action as are both princesses in his household. It will be interesting to see the next moves by our players.

Sass did indeed try to assassinate the princess and crown prince at the show. Thanks to the clue left by the architect, they knew how to protect the 18th floor. Lu asked the elder to make a trap for him that would activate if anybody tried to move the mechanism on the 18th floor that would collapse the building. The screens Lu had made for the royals was pretty impressive. Since there was a second attack I am not sure why they didn’t just leave them closed. The guards provided shields for them and thanks to the trap Lu had made for the 18th floor, Sass the magician/assassin fell at their feet, this time, truly dead. He called Lu a nobody. Well that nobody kicked his ass. 😝Su revealed the slips Sass had made impersonating the official. This referral cost Pei his job. He was demoted to sheriff of Ju. Chicken Fei will be there to assist.😂 The princess was going to declare herself Lu’s mother, but opted to not. She and Lu had a lovely morning with one of the last sky views that would be. Because of the threat of collapse, the Emperor called for the demolition of the building. This would prevent the literal fall of the Tang. Lu was promoted to Supreme Court and Su was demoted to minister of mausoleums. He and Yingtao are deciding how many children.😁 XiJun is still painting. She is making mass copies of Lu paintings to scare away ghosts.😂 They did not give an update of XueHuan. I want to hear more about him and hope he shows up in season 2. Lu is finally made a disciple of Di. It was a touching moment and he received the first three books to accompany the last three. It was a very proud moment for both of them. First day at court Lu discovers he has over 98k cases to solve. He is last seen calling for Su to come save him.😂 This is a very entertaining drama. The music gives it just the right amount of eerie atmosphere. The actors do a wonderful job of engaging you no matter how odd the circumstances. They bring you in to the stories and command your attention. The production staff did an excellent job with all the effects and fight choreography. If you like the strange, eerie, and adventure with investigating, this is a drama for you.

The administrator is poised in the Resentment Tower with his men to catch Sass. So is Lu and crown Prince. He Lan Xue plays for them. She received a gift of rouge and saw the proclamation declaring Sass dead. She breaks out into tears and offers to play. She starts the song and when she tears up goes to touch up makeup with the promise of returning. What actually happened was she borrowed the appearance of the beggar boy and she went out one way while her lover escaped from balcony. All hell has broken loose downstairs as all three factions of soldiers start fighting. It is utter chaos. The administrator sees Sass and Lu fighting. He shoots an arrow and kills HeLan Xue. I am grieved with this because there is a pretense that the one in the boat could have been Sass. BS. What he has done is angered the magician in the most horrible way right before show. Everybody is on edge because they don’t know where Sass is or what he has planned. They find the architect of the sky tower dead and in odd position. This literally points them to the clue about the building. There is a weak point in the 18th floor of the structure. Pei deliberately hurts his foot to miss the tethering at sky tower. He has also forbidden his daughter to go and give the guys a heads up. He is going to use his injury to tie XiJun down. He seems to be a well meaning man but I am not sure he is guiltless with this building construction. He knows more than he says and seems very invested in dealing with Sass. There is a story there. The magic show has started. The crown prince was not happy the emperor ate the cherry before having it tast tested. The father sends the fruit to Princess and crown prince. She wants to try it but seeing how serious her nephew is, she tosses it down and doesn’t eat. The next trick has one that changes to a bird in a box. There is an interesting scene here. Lu is guarding the grand Princess. She comments on it. He responds. It is a stiff but sweet encounter. I do not know if it will be a good idea for these two to interact. Lu is making such great strides becoming a warmer person. His mother has no true concern for the lower class. They exist for her use and disposal. He was once pretty close to that sentiment and I really don’t want to see him go there again. I like him best when he is looking out for all the people and fighting for justice. Su for all of his prevarications, is a much better influence for him.

Lu and Su have split up to find more clues about Sass. They both agree that the man that was killed was not him. They are not among the few that know about the wooden bird. They have a good drawing of the woman they are looking for thanks to XiJun. The officials are not helping. Lu is seen as the new kid on the block and not deserving of assist since they were collecting info for twelve years. They won’t work with Su either because we still don’t know who exactly was behind Di’s death at beginning of drama. It is coming full circle and they do have the makings of a net for Sass…so against all odds progress is being made. Su would have been better in Resentment Tower, he is much better on his feet. Lu studied well and is even complimented on it, but it was fiction not fact with some of the details. She laughs and tosses the book on the table. His three friends are not having the good time they expected.🤣🫣 They are asked to go again and settle for an escort each for the upcoming magic show. They return but not happy with the options. The young beggar is hired to deliver treats to the lady in question. She graciously lets the child in and appreciates the treats of cherry dumplings. The second time he brought roast camel, but a bird of prey intercepts him. He wakes up a lot later with his money and purchase still with him, so he heads for the hall and gifts her a second time. This time she asks him if he wants a drink with her and he says no and quickly runs away. Yingtao accompanies Su’s to the author’s home and she is far from impressed. She sees an indulged old man surrounding himself with wine and women. Su brought up their mutual acquaintance investigator Di. The author is cordial, but offers no further information about Sass. We do know Sass is monitoring his lover. It also seems the administrator is correct with his assessment of when he will come get his girl. They have two more episodes to wrap all this up.

Fenghua follows the directions of the princess and meets with Sass. What he doesn’t know is that the princess met with Lu on sky overlook floor and told Lu to monitor him. She said not to go easy on him just because Fenghua is her servant. The guards intercept Fenghua and Sass at a meeting and a fight breaks out resulting in the death of both of them. Lu is unconvinced this is Sass but the crown prince puts out a statement that Sass is dead and Lu was the court official that brought him to justice. Lu is upset with the proclamation and goes to official demanding to know why issued when there was no positive proof Sass was the deceased. His boss thinks Lu is a position climber since both royals appointed him. He has no confidence in Lu’s work or why he is there. In a second meeting with Lu the Princess thanks him for killing Fenghua. She even admits that he was a good officer and loyal subject. However, his grudge against crown prince and his determination to enact revenge was his downfall. The princess was tired of his machinations to cause problems between the royals. She then reveals to Lu that she is his mother and that her son would understand and forgive past wrongs. I am not sure how Lu is processing the information. She did not directly call him son, but gave very non subtle clues of his past that would strongly imply what their relationship is. I wonder what Su would think of this revelation? XiJun has completed the drawing of Sass based on the boys memories. It show Sass looking at sky terrified and back of ministry of justice flying at him through the air to complete a killing blow. They still do not know about the wooden bird. This is a Tang version of drone. The prince wants the magic show to take place without public disturbance. He thinks Sass is likely to show up since the majority thinks he is dead. Our two couples find themselves at dumpling place for cherry dumplings. They meet up and head back to Lu’s officer quarters. He can have Su and “wife” hide there as they all read the banned book. They are hoping there is enough information for XiJun to be able to draw Sass’ lover. It was cute watching the women eat dumplings while the men poured over the books. Di’s last case was about Sass and he died under mysterious circumstances. For this reason, Su is much more determined than usual to solve the case. At the end of the episode Lu is pretty convinced he knows the name of who they are looking for.

At the beginning of episode royals from different land are invited for a completion celebration of a 36 floor tower. The very top is a scenic view of the entire city. It is by invitation only to be seen. The blueprints have already been destroyed and all who had part of making the tower or knowing its secrets are invited to a special dedication. He seems like a royal who kills the architects to prevent anything copying or surpassing their structures. The minister so happy to be invited may find it not to his liking. For the first time in ages, a magic show will take place. They see the wooden bird in the sky and figure it’s part of the act. It has already dropped ads of Sass, a known murderer as well as magician. After all the kindness shown by her nephew, the princess plots to use Sass to kill the crown prince. She annoys me with her unnecessary ruthless behavior. Her official is pressing for Prince’s death. She commented that he’d been raised by his uncle and did he have something personal involved since he was so invested. XiJun is bored being home. Her father loves her but dislikes her commitment to Lu. He is the typical politician trying to figure out how to stay on the fence between the royals. Lu is given the talisman of the lead general to control the troops however he wants. However, this is an undercover assignment rather than an imperial position. He is told to find copies of a banned book that had opinions against Princess in it. They find Sass but in the chase the wood bird shows up and kills the minister of justice. Before there is even a memorial for him both royals offer candidates. As luck would have it Lu is recommended for the job and the princess approves. She also like XiJun . Sass escaped but a young beggar saw what happened and gives XiJun info about Sass’ portrait. Lu and XiChun worked out so the boy would stay with XiJun and be a replacement for XueHuan. No news of Yingtao or Fei yet. Seems our group really is separated while in Chang’an.

Lu escapes the regent’s home and gets help. Li Yue is not Tang. He reveals his true colors and plans on killing all of them. She Lu shows up with reinforcements he calls out the bear. I hate that a noble creature was trained to be a killer. The crown prince is wounded and the princess finds out that she did indeed use the poisonous face flower and has two hours to live. After a very well choreographed battle amongst the guards and with the bear,Lu is fusing with Princess to Fei for the antidote. As typical with this group, she is healed just in time. I don’t like the Princess. She is a product of her environment but has no heart for the people. Even Su has told her that her nephew would be the better ruler. It is discovered that the Princess is actually Lu’s mother. That he was born out of wedlock and that his father was an enemy of the royals. He even planned on assassinating the princess’ mother but rather than be captured killed himself. I think all this time Su has be working out the mother’s traits in Lu. All his major faults are byproducts of his mother. That explains his arrogance and lack of concern for lower class. Su opts to talk the princess out of recognizing her son and she can’t get him to accept a job except putting XueHuan through school. She does not know that Lu was told his family was murdered by the princess and that his father had changed his age by two years to hide him. Because of the dynamics of royalty, Su pegged it right that he should never know. He needed the heritage he was told as his foundation. He did not think Lu would accept the truth and let himself live. I would like to think this would cause the princess to be more humane about the people she is responsible for. But she is horribly selfish and vain. It may not be possible. It seems our crew might be getting ready to part ways. I really don’t like this notion, so waiting to see what the writer has in store. However, Fei’s words of each going their separate ways so who should XueHuan follow rang too true, tho not what any wanted to hear.

Lu and Su find themselves at the med shop looking to buy the illegal boahuang. They find the seller but he won’t have another batch available until the following day. Knowing this is too late for the Princess they head to the source…Li Yue’s quarters. They meet up with some guards on the way and have a couple thieves along with them to help hunt for the plants. They are digging up various flowers when the meteorite bear shows up. Our two heroes play dead and find themself bound and presented to the regent magistrate. He does not deny his distributing of the poisonous face flower and throws both of them in a secret arsenal room that grows both the poison face flower and the antidote plant. Another visitor shows up…the princess. It is now evident that she feigned her poisoning to test the loyalty of those around her. She is very pleased with Su seeking out the cure but is not as enthused that Lu was also with him. She requests Su to be brought out with the other officials already in the hall. These are the cowardly politicians that were trying to align with the prince when they thought Princess was dying. Su is annoyed that the regent is involved with all this and said so, but he is not surprised to see a healthy princess. His chat with the horse groomer revealed that the princess had plans to go home and have some ripe cherries since newly in season and her favorite. She is annoyed he already knows. She is a very odd diva. She wants things to revolve around her, but she had some real compassion for the children. However, she is also the same one not the least bit concerned about the women being disfigured by the face flower. He is a bit surprised at the officials there being found guilty of disloyalty. He is also noting who reports to the princess. I find myself sorry that the reporting of her death was exaggerated.😝

The third prince arrives before YeTan and is determined to kill the prince shard while vulnerable. He now knows what YeTan is doing and why she is being secret about it. Right when he is going to finish the job Qingkui interferes. She is just as determined to stop him. He truly loves her her but he has not intentions of giving up his chance to be crown prince. As a last resort she throws contents of vial in their eyes. She has the antidote in the void and says she will give it to them after shards have been recovered and in heavenly realm. The third prince does not understand how she considers sister and humans equal in value to her position as consort in the void. He does not understand that she and empyrean prince see the big picture for all the realms and understand service and sacrifice for the greater good. This is who they are at core and even when loving someone, they will still choose to sacrifice themselves. YeTan is delayed and the fire is everywhere. The young prince does an excellent job of bringing the rain. He has bought enough time for YeTan to get to fiery. Eventually the fire is put out and he is ready to leave the village. He chooses not to say goodbye because he knows he is not the important one even with what he did. Their well being was the important thing. I liked the dandelion shared between him and the boy. It was a sweet gesture to bring that precious part of his prior friendship full circle and leave on a good note. Beast King and Queen have their son and Empyrean princess confined to quarters where they hope a relationship will establish. The prince graciously drinks a very horrible tasting soup lovingly prepared by the princess.🤣 These two are very cute. She knows he is the puppy and he really doe not want his friends to know.😂 When they suggest fiery shard stays there he is a big vote no. This changes when Princess offers to tell everyone a story he doesn’t want them to hear. He reluctantly agrees . QingKui makes medicine for YeTan and they have a very lovely night sharing their stories of being in the unexpected realm. Their swap gave them both unexpected adventures and someone they care about very much. 🥰This is probably the first time they really had a chance to have a good long sister chat with no interruptions. The next morning YeTan explains she must keep going and he needs to heal so he will wait for her. Fiery and Princess have the best hugs🥰These two are very sweet together and she learns like third Prince how he selflessly sacrifices himself for the greater good with no regret or second thoughts. It is simply who he is. I think she will get a better understanding of her sister too. This is where the prince and sis are very similar. So now YeTan and friend find themselves traveling alone together to search for shard two. They have had a long day and ready to give it up when they accidentally find him. YeTan is attracted to his bad boy self but disgusted with what he did next.🤣He has a great love of money and willing to get it from anywhere, even the bottom of a sewage channel.😂 The girls follow him and find themselves at the residence of an assassins group. He has no problem extorting money and she is now seeing the truly heartless version of Empyrean Prince. She decides to gift him an abacus with her friend disguised as one of the counters. Her friend lets her in and shows the princess their treasure vault. Unfortunately she yanked a string of leaves that set off a trap. With a lot of luck and ingenuity they survived the experience. It’s gonna be impossible to cover this up tho so waiting to see what happens next.

I have no words for that shit of an uncle. He is so beyond despicable. He is not even a smart villain. He is a complete idiot as well. He hurts his own brother and then wants to repent it. That advisor needs to be strung up. The governor holds his daughter and grandchild hostage to force BiZhi to fight for Liangya. That man’s ego is so disgustingly big for such a mite of a person. I hope that he is killed and left for the crows. Even his own wife despises him. She at least got Ci out to warn everybody. The general was so damn brave. And even with everything against him his top priority was that damn orchid. He wanted her to know where his heart was even at the end. I am annoyed at the generals turning on Ci and I am grieved that he couldn’t just spit out what was happening before sleeping the entire day away. The writers were very cruel with this😝😭 BiZhi will forever feel guilty because that ass of a leader forced his sword into the general. He is another one of those creeps that wants to share the wealth of blood on their hands with the innocent. He knows he has trapped BiZhi now with that single thrust along with the threat of his wife and child. He has forced BiZhi to break his vow and he doesn’t think he will survive the Wei’s even if he escapes the Qiaos. The treachery of that uncle and advisor is so sickening it makes you physically nauseous to see it. And after their worst acts they act like two of three stooges with a slapstick idiot routine. They are excellent actors or I would not hate them all so much.😝Panyi is in a troubled state and now the real colors will show from the surrounding areas. Yan wants to support his cousin but just like the other ass governor he puts Yan under house arrest. Ci can definitely sympathize.😝 The mayor of Panyi mourns his lost brother and there is heartache all around. And YuLou😝 She has illusions of grandeur even greater than the ass of Liangya. I can’t wait til her vision turns to dust before her eyes. Gma alone could kick her sorry ass out of the house. I have no clue why Shao didn’t just kill her when he should have. Lots of people are dying for that bit of mercy. I am sick, angry, and broken over this episode. This shows the juxtaposition of all that is right and wrong with Qiao clan. The governor would be easier to take if he wasn’t such a feckless coward. He should have had a shouting match with Shao from the beginning about feeling shunned rather than sneak behind his back whining about getting ignored. He is a complete waste of space and doesn’t deserve to steal air to breathe.😝I want to see his own clan get rid of him. Give the wife a dagger. I bet right now she would be happy to be first in line.😝

This is first time Shao had perfect response at right time. They both show such love and respect for each other.🥰 I like how he quietly watches ManMan’s father and sees how she honors his teaching. He sees how much care they have for the people. It’s not about showing off position or bullying. They want the general populace content and peaceful because it is the right thing to do. It will probably come back to bite him that he did not acknowledge the governor as family. But at the same time his overtures were so fake. Even to his daughter and son in law. He wants to look good, not ‘be’ good. The governor thinks he can bully his daughter by demeaning her husband. I was happy to see her spine and challenge her dad to FAFO😝 it is sad that she and ManMan have lost their closeness, but she does have to accept that as consequence that she did not offer support in any fashion. I loved that ManMan asked hubby directly if she made a bad call asking him to support two different fronts. She put it all on the line and quite candidly. His loving remark of being honored to be her sword and shield🥰 it is a shame BiZhi did not get this opportunity. That could have made a huge difference at the table. When ManMan’s dad greeted the refugees and was asked by Shao why, he responded quite candidly that is was simply the right thing to do….just like ManMan in Panyi. It is obvious with the refugees that were turned away who was at fault.😝 Guess they had no pretty women for him to auction off.😝The humility of ManMan’s father bowing in apology to Wei. That was such a profound statement. Nobody from Wei coul not be moved by such a gesture of remorse. His gratitude for the grain Lord Wei shared. These two working together can only result in great things. I loved how Ci looked at his dad in pride as these respects were paid between his father and Shao. He is now truly brothers with his brother in law. The heat of Shao’s request for a child….now🔥🥰 These two finally having a true wedding night. She may end up with twins first.😂 When she still does not choose to invite herself to the Wei family memorial service. As much as she loves him she still does not assume a true place in Wei family. The fact that ceremonial robes were sent post haste to be sure she could be ready. And the loving looks from gma and ma in law. For all the differences between their clans, I am sure both were told how ManMan singlehandedly made the plan that saved Lord Wei from defeat. She is a worthy wife for him. I like that Shao saw pleased smiles from his fallen family for her. I think he has finally combined past and present to head for a bright future and legacy. I think these two are the best representatives of their clans and will take the joined union to great heights. I shudder to think where the Wei’s would have headed with YuLou in the group. She is too ambitious to settle for anything but conquest. This is why she is the best fit for scorched earth partner from Liangya. These two are not done yet, but I truly hope they soon will be.

I have been confused as to whether Fan and ManMan were cousins or siblings but glad this episode clarified it. Fan was so not the one to be wife to a Wei. BiZhi is a very strong but simple man. That is truly where she should be. She represents what is wrong with the Qiaos. It is not that they are bad, but that they are willing to be selfish at the expense of many. This is what happened now 15 years ago.😝It is not necessarily a crime to put oneself first, but where will her child be if Liangya decides to head for Boya? If she does not give support she can’t expect support either. She has deliberately burned her bridge with ManMan. It is good they have the Qiao flag. They are not worthy of the Wei one. Let’s see if any of the Qiaos that use women as currency will show up for her. 😝 I am annoyed with Lord Wei and his attitude. I want his heart to feel fear as his men tell exactly what she did and that Boya support had nothing to do with it. I want the cousin to feel forever ashamed of her actions and to stay away from ManMan from this day on. Her cousin is now a Wei and no part of her.😝 Ci did a damn good job. I like how he candidly sticks up for ManMan and boldly treats Shao like a brother. I want to see these two grow closer. ManMan did a damn fine job directing waterways. She used all her gpa’s knowledge to literally change the tides. She is kinda awesome. She even managed to message her husband with the boat lanterns. He is still too busy acting like an ass but he will see the right of things soon. Production did an excellent job with battle scenes. Your heart is racing with them as they face off with Liangya’s warriors. They know when to slink off in retreat. Yan’s dad claimed him way too late and he proved that his gma told the truth about what really happened with his mother. Him being sent to the border will let him assist Wei and keep him away from a vile dad. It is a win/win. I did not expect him to look so strong and commanding in uniform. He is going to be a nice asset for the Wei family and hopefully find his own version of ManMan. I still cannot believe she dared to stand alone to entice the enemy army to try to kidnap her. She is as wreckless as her husband in putting it all on the line. She and Ci are the best of Qiao clan….may they both live under Wei flag. Together they will do great things.

This rendition of the day was fun to see BanXia kick ass.😂 It was a significant change of pace for XuanHe 😝 While admiring her new expertise he is annoyed at finding himself a much weaker rendition of his usual self. His three brothers can tote him around like a sack of potatoes and BanXia can pack a wallop better than he can😂 Rabbit would be enjoying this immensely if he was along. They now have the constable tied up but not convinced and they have found others. They are surmising they must find a person per marvel. They still don’t know how to escape but progress is being made. I am hoping this winds up soon or they can at least escape to a different painting.

The maid is more obsessed than Yan. I could not believe she boldly went to the lord dressed as his wife to tattle on Yan. The b empress convinced her and provided the wardrobe. But what could she have promised to make the woman do something so stupid? What I liked this time was the veiled threat Lord Wei gave her promising punishment for the rumor instigators. I really want to see some revenge on empress and lackey. She really has it coming. I would like to think Lord Wei felt a bit of conscience when he learned the box held Lady Wei’s treasured items. Especially after his obsession with his own box. He should have noticed the second bracelet, but I don’t think he saw past the incense warmer. The fight Yan and Shao had over ManMan is what empress most likely wanted between the brothers. She just likes to be the wedge period. Lady Wei acted rightly in all of this. I laughed when she’s getting yelled at and she says Gao is the only man I know 😝 she never expected Yan to like her in that manner. I think she was happy that after their first interactions that they finally found family ground and could be in each other’s presence peacefully and even friendly. All this talk of dismissed concubines when they were not seen in house I found a bit unnecessary. There was enough controversy in the house with the three and their maids much less other ‘wives’ of sorts to deal with. Since Shao didn’t have any, these others had no pertinence to storyline. This is more Yan’s territory. Shao would not have wasted time camping out at advisor’s house or with generals in office if he had other beds to visit so this village gossip mill was a weird aside. The other gossip however, about Lady Wei has caused some serious issue. Yan has to admit that his admiration for the Lady of the house has grown to an inappropriate infatuation. He has decided to take the rumor mongers home personally and stay there. This saddens his family but he needs to grow up and feel like a man in his own right. He summed it up pretty accurately that he was the well treated family pet. Yu Lou has made a new enemy and one that will soon have some power behind it. Yan has been dismissed his whole life but he will fight tooth and nail to protect Lady Wei. It will be interesting to watch these two spar. Yan is far more worldly and uses similar techniques. They will have a hard time out sneaking the other. Ci has accidentally got himself in trouble with sister. He came home talking about the hunt and showing off his new horse but it was a very lame excuse about lack of invite. ManMan should have sent a more thorough letter explaining. And when the canal building causes Wei to side with their troublesome neighbor. Boya is going to feel left out on another front. She is upset they do not have Wei backing and here ManMan’s Qiao flag planting may work against her with family. This is going to be a stickier wicket to work out. But one thing is clear…the Lord and Lady are making efforts to be a solid united front in spite of their families. I hope gma’s fall did not cause her too much damage and that she recovers mentally and physically from the fall and loss of grandson. She always looked after Wei house well, but, she may have to accept the fact that she didn’t necessarily provide the best option for Yan. He is not a power seeker by nature…but he should be allowed to live as a man and not a treasured pet. Waiting to see the fallout with this and Boya situation. This episode is starting a lot of family growing pains.
