Mr 8 is a miss…that was interesting. And that she is best friend of tower owner who turns out to be the spoiled princess that marked Zang Hai’s back. It should have been obvious but I really didn’t go there. But the Marquis planted her in the perfect gilded cage. Zang Hai has made a tentative peace with her and she pointed out a Dongxia merchant to him. The second surprise was the second son figuring out exactly who he is. Zang Hai was showing him ledgers to show how his step mother was molding him to be a spendthrift and failure thinking that would gain him assist from close quarters. What he did not expect was to be recognized as the bully seeking info about father. We are finally getting filled in on some of the happenings of that day from a different perspective. The son knows what the Marquis did and hated it. But at the same time it is his father. So he has given Zang Hai one day to remove himself from Marquis and the city or be exposed. This is a big unexpected curve ball to be tossed. This is the first time Zang Hai has to decide if he can kill an innocent to continue his plans. The tower owner has purchased a theater for her friend. She is planning to use the proceeds to help the people of Dongxia. I wonder what she will think when she learns she and Zang Hai are from same place? The second son has gone to his mother’s grave. He is speaking aloud and telling her what is going on in his life. He has just started to talk of Zang Hai not knowing Zang Hai is behind with his father’s device preparing to kill him…..as much as this needs to be done, once killing in cold blood is a point of no return. The prince is an innocent tho his family most guilty.

The three search in the tomb and find it has been raided by three different groups. They see the remains of those who were killed in traps or killed each other. Zang Hai tries the turtle again and we are all disappointed that nothing is there. He follows the teachings of his father to pay respect to the dead and instructs his friends to help repair the tombs and contents. While he is positioning the body he sees that the pattern is different on two squares. When he fixes the pattern a new puzzle is revealed. One square is missing and there are several words to choose from. The quote he recognizes being from the mentor not the tomb couple. After figuring out the puzzle a device his father created is discovered. It is like the device his mentor was going to use against Marquis and changed mind about fuse. Zang Hai carefully adds gold filament to incense. This will cause a distraction so he can escape tomb at dowager’s memorial service. His mentor shows up and fingers the incense but I did not see him remove anything. At the lighting of incense Zang Hai tries to stall because prince isn’t there and device didn’t go off. He figures the device got moved and another set of incense sticks would fix it. The Marquis refuses to wait and gets suspicious of Zang Hai. Zang Hai wants revenge but he has never killed someone in cold blood. He is sweating bullets and it’s obvious something is amiss. A servant adds to it by bringing his improvised incense sticks up where gold thread is evident. There is a thorough search of the incense container but nothing is there. He has to concoct a story that isn’t as seamless as he usually is when speaking. When he leaves he is looking around and the masked man shows him the device he took. They have a candid chat and Zang Hai is enlightened that this three day threat may have originated from the Marquis. He also reminds him that there were two others that were enemies of his family and that if he impatiently kills the Marquis, he may never discover who third person is. I was mistaken on the fish keys last episode. There are three not two. The Marquis and eunuch have two of them but the third party is unknown. So Zang Hai changes his game plan. He confesses to Marquis that he received a threat to kill him. He shows the Marquis the items he received and played up that two days were wasted because he couldn’t find sender. He begs for mercy and tells the Marquis he wants him to have time to make himself safe. The Marquis isn’t really bothered by the threat which indicates he did most likely authorize the death threat to test Zang Hai’s loyalties. He is told to not hesitate to report such things in future. Since he passed that test I think the Marquis is getting ready to pull the son card to see how Zang Hai will do with next level test when paired with son as advisor. It is also a mystery why second son did not go to dowager’s memorial service. This is the first time Zang Hai showed a true chink in his armor. He failed the test but has been given a chance for future redo thanks to his mentors. Hopefully his disciple bro won’t do anything reckless in the interim.

I am glad they explained how the stone worked. I have to admit it was funny seeing him try to get the dam opened again. That was a very clever plan, it is just sad none of the other men could benefit from it. I was surprised to see him in a carriage with the Marquis. I guess I shouldn’t have been because how else can he be dealt with? That was a very candid conversation with a viper poised to strike. He did make valid strategic points about how the Marquis’ chosen ones weakened as much or even more as assisted him. Zang Hai played his hand well but there is no telling how a cornered person will act. He lucked out and his life is at least temporarily spared. The back up plan with arrow launcher, probably to indicate new enemies, was also clever and here I did laugh when first he wants the fuse to hurry up and then it’s like no no stop burning 😂His mentor is a good guard for him. I like that he checked in on him personally to check in Zang Hai’s wounds. I am also relieved none of them thought to poison the darts. Zang Hai is now in an official position with a set raise and given lodging right next to the Marquis. He is even invited to dinner. He gets to sit next to the girl that scarred his back, the brother that tried to literally bury him, and the Marquis who slaughtered his family before his eyes. How he even managed to stay in the room is a feat in itself. I do not know how he is going to react being the son’s advisor. He will shift it to his advantage but I am still curious how this pairing will play out. Is the Marquis trying to limit Zang Hai? Or have his son improve his choices? That remains to be seen. Seeing his mentor at the book store was fun. These meetings lighten up a whole lot of intense storytelling. The meal at the tower was funny. When the gal finally says he knows….😂 he is helping the second son and himself getting the treasury items back but I bet he doesn’t find out about that special jewel anytime soon.😝 These two could really help each other out and he has already proven himself to be far more honorable than any of the royals….so now to see where this new partnership leads.

After making it through he is then accused of knowing building secrets.😝 This guy is determined to give Zang Hai grief but Zang Hai stays humble and then tells them the dowager will show a sign when it rains. He also told them that he was 100% sure they would have rain that day. He is laughed at but when the eunuch is called in he comments on the freak storm that showed up after a beautiful day. This has the Marquis’ attention. Zang Hai asks to kneel before dowager to ask for blessing while he places a stone under coffin so it will move on the wet surface. The Marquis calls him out for that and is deciding if he is going to kill Zang Hai or not. He escapes this first round and ends up with the scholars to learn building techniques. He was given an audience with the Marquis that was blocked by his supervisor. He is forced into taking a job of sealing the ceiling so that rains won’t destroy the ancestral hall documents. That night Zang Hai tells his old mentor how he missed a prime opportunity but that since it really did storm he couldn’t take blame for damages. Zang Hai recognizes that the supervisor keeps the underlings worthless and steals from the inventory. He is tested a second time when he is left alone with the inventory while everybody else leaves. The supervisor is leaving directions for him to be arrested immediately if anything is amiss. So now to see if he makes Zang Hai the fall guy or if Zang Hai proves him a thief.

The boy finds himself on a boat with a masked man. He is encouraged to cry and then talk. After a good cry he chats with his new benefactor. He finds out his father had made plans to get them out of the city but was interrupted by the Marquis of Pingjin. He is asked how he would like to live with or without vengeance. The young boy chooses vengeance and is taken to a new location where he can be trained for the next ten years. He is immediately changed with cosmetic surgery and his fingerprints were altered or removed. He is told the changes are slight but that it will completely alter his appearance so that no resemblance to his parents remains. He finds himself in a barricaded room where he is challenged to use the poem his father taught him to escape the wooden puzzle locking him in. It takes him three days but he masters the hexagon that will grant him freedom. His lessons continue so that he is knowledgeable in construction and geomancy like his father was. When he hits twenty he is given further instructions in how not to be seduced. He learns to bottle the hate in his heart where it cannot be seen and to let his outer expressions present what people expect, but not necessarily his real emotions. After passing half of that test his benefactor comes back with a puzzle. He is asked questions while unlocking it. He told exactly how many tiles were in two different locations and gave exact recall of what happened to his friend and family even after all these years. He is shown the drawing of the Marquis and recall in detail the vengeance he still has. He is told with the dowager ill that there is a rare opportunity to get close to the household even tho he has not completed his training. He is given a new identity and what his training specializes in. He is shown drawings of those closest to Marquis and recalls what each did the night of the massacre. I am thinking the second son is the one he and friends captured to find out information. I find myself annoyed that a jealous coworker helped cause this for his ‘friend’s’ job. He accepts the challenge and believes the kinder mentor is going to accompany him. He finds out again not to be deceived by kindness. He is called by his name and his response is who is that? My name is Zang Hai. Another eventful episode.

The wife comes to the celebratory dinner and makes her stance clear. The Marquis plans to banish children and wife so that Zhifu’s condition can be hid. Again kudos to the actor playing eldest son. He really does this well. All the supporting cast make their characters shine. There is no bad acting anywhere. Production makes all the scenes believable. Petition drum interrupts the Emperor welcoming ZhiXing to court. The Marquis’ wife shows up in ceremonial robes and petitions the emperor to charge her husband for bribing Martial arts test officials to make ZhiXing first in exam. This is being investigated and the Marquis is tossed in prison. I am not sure what is going to happen to ZhiXing. He is shaping up nicely and this is a major slam. The eunuch was all smiles as the wife brought out a ledger that incriminated the Marquis and personally presented it to the emperor. She just did all his work for him. The Marquis is not worried. He has his own backup plan for the eunuch. What he did not expect was to encounter Zhinu. I am not sure Zang Hai timed this well. I almost agree with Marquis he was too impatient and played his hand too early. His laughter at his son delivering the evidence to Zang Hai makes me wonder what else there is to the story. Is he acting for Zang Hai’s benefit or has Zang Hai been fooled to believing something is true that isn’t? His eyes popped that Zong Hai knew about the queen, but it still seems that something is missing. His real attitude about insignificant people puts him back where he belongs as evil as eunuch. He does have a sense of honor but it is only for a specific class. Anything lower gets a different moral code with no thought about the justice of it. We find out that Chu had been his informant for quite awhile and probably was instrumental in causing the alter collapse where they expected the astronomer to die. That plan had a wrench tossed in when not only did he live, but he left with Gui seal. Now was the astronomer following orders from somebody or was this his own plan? Too many are dead that could answer these questions. AnTu does not believe that her mother is the third person. I think deep down she realizes this has to be the case but she is not ready to think her mother could deal with Cao and Marquis not only for the seal but to knowingly slaughter a group of innocent people to blur the truth. She will have to ponder on this awhile. She sees where Zang Hai is on the matter but she is not ready to think he is right just yet. ZhiXing wanted to nix Zang Hai killing his dad after telling him the story of the fish. They both know that this isn’t going to happen and I think both have regret with this. The Marquis laughing…did Zang Hai get duped about something or was he laughing at the other two coming to similar fates? Only he knows the answer. None of them have the entire story or one of the three would know where the seal is and the other two would check them in using it. Who was behind the astronomer taking the seal and who hid it? Was this done by Dongxia or another party we still need to meet? There are still as many questions as answers. The one thing we do know is that the Marquis’ wife is willing to burn down the entire house along with her son’s disgrace. ZhiXing is the innocent here. I would really like to see him get a decent ending. I really don’t want to see him serving Cao and I hope the emperor can hold him guiltless of his parents’ corrupt natures. The military is a good spot for him. He has cleaned up his act and the only thing he was ever guilty of was being lazy and gambling too much. I hope the emperor still lets him serve even if a different position out of court. Working up the ranks will be a better fit than amongst all these corrupt politicians. At the end of the day we have to wonder if Zang Hai will become as bad or worse than those he wants to destroy? This is the real question. He has no family to ballast him. He only has mentors that guide him on this chosen path. Even his friends only want blood. So when and if he completes his objective……what will he become?

XiaoCen had a surprise for XuXiao. She was staying. He had a surprise for her. He was commissioned to take the professor’s place on a project in Malaysia. The loudmouthed friend made the assumption he was considering schooling abroad. Xu Xiao’s constant mention of how much he liked the area and superior schools and equipment didn’t assuage her fears. I was getting frustrated with XiaoCen for not just asking Xu Xiao if he was going to study abroad. That would not have impacted his decision and save her anxiety. Her aunt got a shock when she said she wanted to go to Malaysia. I was all for the trip til she arrived in a different city and XuXiao wasn’t there nor sure when he would be. Loudmouthed friend was again getting on my nerves fighting with phone to keep her from calling, but fortunately YueXin got her way and told XuXiao. I liked his guided tour for her and the no words but immediate kiss when she saw him.🥰 His employer even agreed to accommodate her so not sure how long she is staying there. It was nice to see them strolling down the streets enjoying the scenery and the museums. These two say a lot without saying anything at all.🥰

Very proud of the assistant for doing so well on first firing attempt. Laugh out loud moment when he is by mentor’s bed and mentor tells him to stop crying like he’s in a soap opera😂🤣 Very satisfied that mentor publicly had apprentice take chair and credit for good work. Xu Xiao is an excellent person and bf. He matter of factly told XiaoCen that he would respect and support her choice no matter what it turned out to be. He just encouraged her to take care of herself first and to follow her heart. Her professor backed that up by telling her how proficient she was in art and porcelain relic restoration. He made her think about ‘her’ choice not just what her family wanted. Like we all do at the cusp of adulthood, she had to decide what course she wanted to take and have the resolve to go forward. I wanted to applaud when she told her mom she wasn’t going, had already talked with her dad, and waited for aunt in the car. I kept hollering for the mom to just go and not show up. 😝 I was glad they hugged it out at the airport and mom finally saw a young woman before her. That was a beautiful moment. The other beautiful family moment was when little sis said she had no regrets and loved her life in Jingdezhan. There was a beautiful moment for me when her mom headed for the plane. Sis and daughter need a break from her along with me.😝😂

The kiln master is still in hospital and Xiao Cen’s phone died. While she and Xu Xiao watched over him, her mom tried to call several times. Here Xiao Cen should have called from a different phone to explain. She of all people knows how her mother is. The apprentice is minding the kiln and running through the checklist of what his master told him to watch for. He has the students help with the wood and Xiao Cen collapsed. Xu Xiao got her mom to the hospital tho she told her daughter differently. Now we finally know what’s wrong with Xiao Cen. She has hyper sensitivity with allergies and must monitor almost everything. This explains the hovering mom. However, she should keep in mind her daughter is becoming an adult and it will be her responsibility to take care of her health. When she finally got home I was annoyed her mom kicked her sister out of the room when it’s her sister’s house.😝 She should have gone to her daughter’s room for a private conversation. She continues to forget she is not her sister’s parent nor head of her house. I am struggling to like her character because she is so intense and unreasonable when convinced her side of the argument is always the right side. She chats with Xu Xiao and because he is local as well as his family, he confirmed that he intended to stay in Jingdezhen. She told him plainly she had no intention of keeping her daughter in the area. Her latest move was to call her husband and for them to unilaterally decide to change her major. Her sis tried to reason with her but since she is a single mom, big sis was not going to give in about her daughter dating. She sees this as two birds with one stone by changing Xiao Cen’s major. The episode ends on a positive note with the kiln master showing hand movement. I am trying to empathize with Xiao Cen’s mom but I find her insufferable. The one thing that is starting to show is that Xiao Cen is becoming more independent. I am hoping for a peaceful compromise about schooling.

Qi Yi and YueXin are a lovely couple. He tells her what’s on his heart and she understands he is not a smooth talker to other girls. He is so smitten and his care for her is obvious. He is willing to step back and be friends, her response, ask me again. 😁First kiss in a beautiful setting. Xu Xiao has been let into the inner circle of the claw machine.😂 These two are equally sweet as they enjoy together the one fun thing she allows for herself. Her mom hovers over her too much. But we don’t know XiaoCen’s history and how severe it might have been healthwise. Old habits do die hard. I just really wish she had a better means of delivery for her care than her incessant nagging and micromanaging. Her love is appreciated but also very stifling. There is a reason every time Xiao Cen is asked a question about preferences they all lead back to mom. She oversees everything. 😝 Maybe her little sister can mellow her out a bit. The kiln master grudgingly admits the workmanship was good on the porcelain his assistant made. He is annoyed that it was fired in a modern kiln and doesn’t forgive him for that. Xiao Cen quietly shows him some books and reminds him that there was a day when this kiln was considered new and innovative. The kiln master stubbornly agrees to an order and his assistant is worried that his mentor is in poor health and it is a lot of work for a small order. They load up what looks like a forest full of wood and monitor the kiln and kiln master carefully. Sometime right before breakfast the kiln master collapsed and it was not caught immediately. He is rushed to the hospital where they learn he had cancer and was pushing through its final stages. His apprentice is monitoring the heat at the kiln because it cannot be left unattended. This may be what his master had in mind. His apprentice will now have to make all judgments for himself in a trial by fire. This episode has a lot of beautiful scenery and sweet couples. But for as much as the mom gets on my nerves, it’s like her spidey sense of danger is up and Xiao Cen is getting weaker as she gets more stubborn about participating. I am glad Xu Xiao is monitoring her closely and hope things stay on a smooth course for Xiao Cen’s health.

When they get to the kiln they discuss the difficulties in firing and the placement of bricks in reconstruction. Since it is an ancient skill and modern kilns are much easier to regulate, there is debate on the wisdom of the expense of firing it up and keeping repaired. Do the benefits outweigh the cost.?This skill is unique and the biggest argument in its favor is that the pottery from this kiln will be unique. Nothing else compare with it. The master of the kiln has only one apprentice and he doesn’t want him using the kiln. He is utilized most as the master’s caregiver and while he thinks he has been giving his apprentice wisdom, the apprentice is not in agreement. They are at odds because a porcelain piece the apprentice created, was not only rejected but thrown to the ground to shatter. Xu Xiao goes to talk to the apprentice and XiaoCen stays and chats with the master. Both have a good conversation but find they have inadvertently taken sides. XiaoCen understands the master because he is very like her mother and this is where Xu Xiao gets in trouble with his return comment. What was interesting this episode was Xiao Cen making their relationship public and YueXin not sure if she wants an older bf at all. He very sweetly confessed but he headed immediately to first kiss which she was not ready for. She tries to hide from him the next day but he goes to her directly and tells her to be clear if she doesn’t like him so she won’t feel pressured. She fears that him being older means more experience with girls and she doesn’t know how she feels about that. She hasn’t rejected him but she is not sure how to accept him either. Their teacher noted the various couples and just grinned at them all. Xu Xiao and XiaoCen overcome their awkwardness after disagreement and talk it out. He apologizes and she agrees he was right. He has the apprentice’s porcelain shards in his bag and I am hoping these two can work their magic repairing it for him. What sets this apart from other college dramas is the cinematography of the area and beautiful porcelain shots. The class is a fun group of students who learn and have fun together. There are small cliques of special friends but they do not exclude others and this group is refreshing in that they get along collectively without jealousy or bias. They individually and collectively work to learn new skills and to become capable young adults. This is simply pleasant and wholesome viewing.

YueXin and Xiao Cen are sweet. The girls point of view was to ask him again til he hears. 😂 Xu Xiao and prankster was funny. 😂 He saw it as game over if no immediate response. I was afraid Xu Xiao might have received bad advice, but prankster did good. They both show up early and lie about location. 😂 I like how he explained himself and acknowledged he heard her. And then he delivered a heartfelt confession. 🥰 The inching of hands and letting little fingers touch🤣 These two are just freakin cute. That was the perfect ambiance for a romantic evening. I don’t think they even realized that their interactions actually haven’t changed that much. The big difference is hearts are involved now. XiaoCen drops him flat to escape down the escalator to hide from her friends. Xu Xiao held his own, even in front of women’s clothing. 😂Yue Xin understood and teased him a bit with her comment to friend. I was annoyed with her mom for not letting her eat auntie’s breakfast, but saw her with better understanding when Xiao Cen’s stomach is upset with Xu Xiao’s choice. The class trip is covering kilns and they are getting ready for a picnic. I am really enjoying the porcelain info as well as the cute friends and couples. It’s interesting and filmed nicely.

The current family dynamics are frustrating me some. Xiao Cen’s mother is acting like she is the head of the house rather than a guest. Her nephew needs guidance and discipline, but she is demanding and relentless in how she goes about it. She plays the same harsh tune nonstop and it’s annoying. It was an interesting change of pace for her banning of studio to be accepted by Xiao Cen without complaint. It took the wind out of her lecturing sails. 😝I really wish the younger sister would be more assertive with her sister and set boundaries. The biggest one being to be her sister not parent.😝 Xiao Cen is misreading things at the studio, but she is not wrong that she is left idle too long when there. Xu Xiao doesn’t help when he says how rude she is for not being there after promising. He is right in one sense because this is out of character for her, but he never bothered to ask why. I really appreciated the artist’s chat with her and clearing up XiaoCen’s misunderstandings. That was nicely done and like a big sis chat. The exhibit was set up well, but there was very little marketing to publicize it and the studio manager put all her eggs in one basket. When the local artist did not want to invest, that was a big slam. It was interesting that this was the time Xiao Cen spoke up. She talked about the piece she liked and that their efforts were worthwhile. Her encouragement roused the disheartened spirit of the group for them to look forward with optimism. I like the friendship of YueXin and Xiao Cen. They are not besties yet but getting closer. Yue Xin encourages her about Xu Xiao and reminds her that girls don’t have to wait for boys to make the first move. Sharing earbuds on the bus is a very small step but a sweet one. They are at least being more comfortable with each other again.

The wife and brother of the poor man that died are joining forces to make a funeral outside the courthouse demanding their brother be returned. Their hypocrisy is grating. They just see that 5 million lawsuit from the court rather than the pittance from the deceased’s estate. Shen was rushed out and hidden when he went to pick up his assistant at the courthouse. To avoid a further scene he went to visit an old friend in criminal law who is filing for divorce. This resulted in a boys night out and a drunk Shen threw up all over Jin’s outfit she was going to wear to court. She was supposed to see a wealthy woman about a copyright law case but ended up losing the client because she lies first rather than just admitting her real circumstances. This habit of her bugs the hell outa me because it doesn’t serve her well and she won’t quit doing it. She is as determined to lie as Mr Zhou is to make a deal. The pretentious brother told Qin about her rental tag and offered her a case but she was too busy trying to flag down the woman that left. She is not wanting to withdraw the case for her other client and is heading to her house to help her clean. I think lawyer Qin is a good person, but her penchant for lying I find off putting. I was also annoyed with Shen not accepting a drink from a lawyer. She was most likely offering tea and after she helped him out, it was rudely handled. But as a judge he does have a public image to protect which is why he should not have drunk so much with his friend. I am wondering if the youngest son is the one that has something wrong with him he is hiding and that is why the father wants him to take donor test. Maybe it’s the son that needs the kidney rather than the father. I am not sure what other reason a healthy dad would want to know if his son’s kidney was compatible. The judge is right that there is something odd going on with this family. Qin’s roomie is interesting. She is both sweet and scary. This episode had a lot more questions and unresolved issues. I am hoping Shen gets cleared without that outrageous settlement to that undeserving family,

I am still not a fan of Mr Zhou, but I adore his mother. He is not meanspirited but he likes to hedge his bets with deals rather than sincerity. This puts everybody that works with him in a bad light. Their petty arguments led to him being carted around on his wife’s car hood. They are most concerned about scaring each other into compliance than what works for their family His mom has a facial injury due to an accident and her scars scared the boy. That started all this showboating. When Shen threatens to call the police and has Qin play along, the Gma overhears and comes in to plead for her daughter in law. I was crying with her and for her as she made her case to include never seeing her grandson again if they would not take the mom to jail. The actress playing the wife did a phenomenal job of changing her persona from the wealthy non caring ex to the bawling daughter embracing her mom in law for the first time in a long while. The scene was very moving. I also loved the scene with them eating the sesame snacks on the stairs with the dad looking on from a distance. This is who they really are when they stop being idiots to manipulate each other. The poor old man with the three vultures was dragged into court when it’s obvious he should have been in hospital. His family is a trio of argumentative self serving vampires sucking the very life out of him while grasping for his cash and estate. They are disgustingly reprehensible and should have been charged with public disturbance and elderly abuse. 🤬 I really think he did disconnect the tube to assist his breathing and chose to peacefully die while they argued out in the hall. Judge Shen is now being sued by this motley crew because they see a cash cow through the court. His mentor stuck up for him and did a damn good job, but now she is being chastised for it told this will put Shen in a worse light. I am not convinced of that. They were all set to settle and throw him under the bus. At the end of episode his dad is told about it thinks he should be held accountable. He tells his wife their son is busy. I don’t like the dad. It’s not that he’s really in the wrong, he just has to be a know it all ass when he admonishes his son. The mom should meet Shen out of the house instead of trying to get him to come home. She would get better results and actually be able to have a conversation. I don’t think it’s too late for the men in her life to make peace, but she is going to have to accept it will have to be on their terms rather than her machinations to force them together. The pretentious brother that sucked all the benevolence from his family he could and now says sorry I’m out when the family needs his help is a piece of work. He should have at least had the grace to look sheepish rather than entitled. Shen has been benched for now waiting for the outcome of the investigation. When all of them watched and heard from the sidelines. It is incredible they think they have the right to cast stones. This episode was touching and annoying. They definitely show the best and worst of family dynamics. The jobs dealing with them in their worst moments are definitely not for the faint of heart.
