I think they tried to follow real history. In history, as soon as ZZJ ascended to the throne, he deposed with Hu (amicably if I'm not mistaken) and made Sun as his Empress. Hu was sent to palace outside but ZZJ didn't prevent her to enter Forbidden City and sit at the empress place in events. Hu and Sun also have no problem with each other. Empress Dowager also frequently visited Hu at the outside palace and Hu also frequently visited Forbidden City. I think though it seems like cruel to depose Hu, in this case ZZJ just simply love Sun (YZJ) and want to make her his legal wife. Hu also accepted it because ZZJ and Sun were childhood lovers. ZZJ and Hu were married in the first place because of auspicious reading.

Not really actually. Yingluo is bold, Zijin is quite restraint (in positive way). Yingluo is ruthless while Zijin is soft-hearted. But both have strong justice. There's no such thing as it is decided based on popularity. Otherwise those senior actors like Zhou Xun, Liu Tao would have lost to the younger actors. It supposed to based on nationality and hit dramas the actors scores. And also, it depends on actor's agency to grab it for the artist. Supertalk and num of followers on weibo do not impact on casting.

You are maybe too young or haven't met a lot of people to have this kind of general impression. I have a friend who never dated or show any interest on romance and 1 day I received wedding invitation from him. He married a girl whom he just met at workplace for about 3 months and now they are happily married having 3 children together. I think Xu Kai's acting approach is a bit atypical. His role makes sense when you ponder back the story. His portrayal didn't scream protagonist in most dramas and that makes easier to watch the drama rather than focusing on actors. He got me puzzled with his Wang Lu's portrayal (in Lingjian Mountain) when first time watching it. Now, I got Lingjian Mountain on countless rotation because Wang Lu is so refreshing.

Somehow I get what you mean by he broods. Most of the time it happens when he faced conflicts and disagreement. ZZJ is a man with little words, he speaks when needed only and spent most of his time observing things. This kind of personality seems like brooding all the time because he lives in his mind, he laid out thoughts 2-3 steps ahead in his mind, so when things happen not the way he thought or planned, he get frustrated and while he attempts to fix it (in some cases, voice out disagreement), he backed out because for him it will cause more damage to re-arrange everything back. So he vented out his frustration silently while at the same time refuse to blame anyone. He put so much thought on how to make things right without causing harm, not disrespecting anyone and most importantly achieve the best solution. That's why all you can see is him brooding. That's what normally people will see with this kind of personality from the outside. And I get that most people will get frustrated because he seemed like not doing anything while in fact he tried in soft ways and little by little rather than going drastically. As for he broods when facing YZJ, he just couldn't figure out how he should deal with his feelings at the same time not knowing YZJ's real feeling. That's why ZZJ is at lost when it comes with YZJ. He's a very logical person while you can't define feeling logically.
