Ep01

That was such a cute episode ^^
Really loved it. These two are so obvious ^^
All that awkwardness is SO relatable...
And the end of the episode was like O_O
Really?

WHAT A RIDE!

Watched this because it was recommended to me. Absolutely loved it from start to finish. The ending was... completely WTF? I was like huh? And yet extremely satisfying.

I was bracing myself because I read some comments saying they didn't like the ending and... I have to say, it doesn't make a lot of sense but I don't care. I threw logic and common sense out the window, the premise was already ridiculous in the first place.

Removing 1 point, for some overly long scenes and Esther Yu overacting the cute with the Bamboo kid. I wasn't irritated enough to dislike the show because of them, but I though it turned the show overly childish at times which was a disservice to it.

I've seen many a shitty dramas lately and this one is soooooooooooooooo above the rest, that I still can't hold these little flaws against it.

A solid 9.

Ep 45: Can somebody care to explain what Xu Feng and Run Yu did at the beginning of this episode? Run Yu and Kuang…
I'm sure it's better explained in the novel, but I personally didn't get either. The only important thing to take into account is that after this 'sequence', Run Yu has made clear his intentions to Xu Feng. Given how much time they spent on this particular scene, you would expect the Emperor to sort of know as well but whatev'.

You know...I've been mostly bored and annoyed to death during the second half but I wasn't expecting to get PISSED…
Like seriously all these assholes are still living the good life after everything that's happened。 That b*** of an assembly woman in spite of inciting murderS, hiding proofs of her disgusting son's murder and all the corruption still avoids prison... She even joins hand with Ji Hoon's murderer who got no punishment in spite of having eye-witness who saw what he did ( that's another last ditch finger thrown to viewers through one last sickening annoying nonsensical plottwist).

I've seen many a shitty drama, but as long as you give viewers a satisfying ending, I still wouldn't rate you harshly... But this?
F*** this show. That's 4 for killing off the only character I cared about and letting his murderer and the one that instigated it living the good life.

What a waste of time seriously.

I've been mostly bored and annoyed to death during the second half but I wasn't expecting to get PISSED at the end as well!

Basically if you're expecting some proper pay-off at the end, let me tell you, you're gonna be thoroughly dissapointed.
Thank you show for giving me the finger.

Do I need YOU to remind me that the world sucks and life is unfair?
NO I DON'T! At least when I'm giving you MY FREE TIME, YOU should give me the ILLUSION that JUSTICE EXISTS AT LEAST IN THE REALM OF FICTION. Fudge it!

They're hinting at a second season that will probably never ever happen but even if they do make another one... I won't bother.

I wouldn't commit again if I were you...60 episodes is a huge commitment and the FL is a brainless frustrating…
To be fair now that I've finished it... I actually think that apart from the part where they go to the human realm ... which is too long and pretty unnecessary to the main plot ( this is what led me to rate the show 7 and not more), this is actually a pretty good show...
BUT ALSO...
an extremely frustrating one. I've personally ranted a lot on that particular subject over the past few weeks here so I'm not gonna repeat myself. But in short, I'm glad I watched it, but I'm probably never going to watch this twice.

There are C dramas that have far less interesting stories but are way less frustrating and much more enjoyable than this one which I'll gladly rewatch and rated higher ( I wish MDL added an "enjoyment bar" because this should be the main criteria).

I think lots of people tend to forget the draggy overly long half of the drama because it's in the middle of the show.

It's like when you write an essay. You have to start with a good introduction and finish with a strong conclusion... if the middle is mid, it's not that much of a problem because overall, people tend to remember only their first and last impression.

And this drama has that. The beginning is strong, the end is great ( well apart from the unexplained reunion but this is nitpicking) and hence, you keep that strong impression that this drama was amazing... forgetting the weeks you just wanted to punch your screen because you were frustrated at either Jin Mi, the Emperess or the Emperor.

So I binged the first 6 episodes but after that it's a slugfest to the finish line BUT the opening is a banger.Long…
I don't know what exactly this show is missing...
Probably a combination of several factors notably:

1. Becomes tropey and predictable.

2. Goes round and round without moving the plot forward. It's more of of the same all the time, bored out of my mind.

3. Characters, villains and heros both, being completely one-note. No complexity whatsoever.
I particularly don't like Mu Chan and Ju Hyeon... BUT Jo Dan, Ju Hyeon's cyber colleage is at the top of my irritating list. He's too hyper for no reason, really annoying.
Scratch that. ALL these characters are annoying except for team Gaetal's members... though they're still all one note.

4. Can't care for any of these characters apart maybe from Ji Hoon. Maybe instead of wasting all these minutes on a useless chase that always go back to its starting point, more time dedicated to these characters' personalities and personal struggles would have made me care more but ALAS!

5. Cinematography is B.A.S.I.C.

It's not bad... It's just bland.

Also 1h10 to 1h15mn per episode is too long. If it was 10 minutes shorter or more, this would have given a tighter script... This episode length is really hurting K dramas... Back in the early 2000s when I started to watch them, the average was 50 minutes and you'd get occasionally episodes that were 1h to 1h05 minutes at most...
NOW?
1h is the shortest, and you also get series which average length per episode is 1h30 minutes with some episodes flirting with the 2h line. WTF South Korea?
You're doing a disservice to your industry.

As a bookworm, I do have a long attention span but even I am complaining.

Anyway... Still 2 episodes left to watch... It's tough because at this point I'm just watching for the sake of completion and the boredom is KILLING ME. I won't rate this above 7. Jury's still out about how low the rating is gonna get. Above 5, sure but how much? Hmm....

Not terrible, but not good enough for me to recommend.

Lol that's great ^^ I'm planning on starting the show next week ^^

For the BL industry, I personally don't really care about all the extra stuffs that is done outside drama filming... If that's what makes them survive... it's honestly a bit sad.
With all the money that industry is bringing, it's about time they started to seriously invest in the production of good dramas with good scripts.

Anyway, actors should act and that's it. Eventually ad endorsement etc... but all the acting sweet in front of cameras? Honestly that's overkill, and I don't think companies should ask that of their actors. Even actors who are together in real life don't necessarily like to be filmed together. That's their private lives.

Ideally, actors are actors and should be able to act in straight and LGBTQ+ shows as they see fit. The worse for me is seeing some "fanservice" from two straight actors who obviously can't bear to touch each other. Honestly it's okay if you can't do it... BUT in that case, just don't accept the role.

Phat waking up in Thithat’s body and finding out Mind is marrying Thithat while the real him was in a long coma…
The coma idea would have been a really good idea as you explained.
I actually bought the book because I'm sure most of the draggy stuff isn't in it.... But I'm not Thai fluent nor have I started to read the novel... since it takes me MONTHS to finish a single book in Thai and I'm currently reading another one... So I can't tell you how the book fares comparatively and by the time I will be able to, we both will have forgot you ever asked that question.

I DID IT!
I swore to myself I would finish this show before the end of the month and I did.

As written below, this series would have been way better without that veryyyyyyyyyyyyy draggy middle which ruined the experience in my opinion.

The last 20 episodes were way better especially the last 10/15 episodes which were fast paced especially when you compare them to the rest of the series.

The end was pretty lackluster and as much as I though both the FL and ML depicted pain and longing well, I honestly though they had little chemistry together. But since they weren't together for most of drama except when the FL was a brainless idiot, that didn't bother me that much.

Anyway, final personal rating 7. I can't get past the draggy pace. If they had kept the quality of the first 10 episodes and the last 20... That would have been a 9 ( 1 point for the lack of chemistry of the main pair + blood pressure running high) but they had to drag down the story with too much episodes that served nothing and the emperor and empress that were just too hateful from start to finish.

Yeah I think I'm going to try watching that one once there's one or 2 left to air left.

I've tried to watch a couple of lakorns, but dropped most of them except for 2 and all, included those I finished, to use your words " were so draggy that it gets (...) frustrating to watch" ( I wouldn't say confusing because for me, it's a lot of additional subplots that serves absolutely no purpose to the main plot except lengthening these series for nothing).

I find it really sad because, because of that, I've mostly stuck to Thai BLs but most of them are just mediocre at best and don't make any efforts in the plot department and I'm getting sick of their poor directing, poor plots and their ridiculous over the top fanservice ( again I said "most" BLs I didn't say "all of them", don't attack me if you enjoy the genre).

Anyway, this one is short and both leads are eye candies. They've also put some money in and unlike most lakorn I've tried to watch, the sound quality is GREAT ( I need to highlight that point because my God why do most lakorns sound like they were filmed in the 80s is beyond me).

Now I've spoiled myself the end of episode 5 so I'm not really sure how they'll handle 4 additional episodes without it being draggy... But whatever happens, it's only 4 episodes. It should be okay.

Lol that picture.
I had to take a double take and check his face on other drama posters to be sure. Why this picture?
It's not ugly per say, but that guy is so cute, and he's basically got the "cute look" in most of his dramas, why choose a picture with a moustache and beard, that doesn't look like him and makes him look older than his age?
On Ashes of Love Jun 20, 2025
At Ep 40...

Probably my final opinion about this series.
It's extremely uneven.

It started very well and I got sucked into the story pretty quickly, but from episode 12 to 37, I really struggled to not drop the show... And that's over a third of the series (If you're watching the Viki version of 60 episodes).
There's a good chunk that from I've read is not included in the novel or maybe really short ( I don't remember) namely the part where they go in the human realm which basically does nothing to advance the plot. It just shows the Empress is a b** (though her ass*** of a husband is no better) but that point had already been driven enough times already by that point ( at the cost of my blood pressure might I add) so including that whole storyline is just overkill for no reason.
There's some very important back story included for Run Yu, but it takes very little time compared to all the extra useless fillers.

Finally by episode 39, the story picks up again... But from what I've seen so far, I'm sure I'm going to get at least 10 episodes of extra useless fillers and per classic Chinese wuxia traditions, some rushed ending.

Anyway...
This would have been way better at 40 episodes instead of 60.

The main plot is really good but bogged down by its length... I think it's something you see a lot for older shows which people watched on TV. Doesn't matter the country, they often put some filler scenes or extra side stories to make shows longer...

But people habits have changed... It may not be noticeable if you watch one or two episodes a week, but it's jarring when you watch them on streaming services and basically watch more than one episode a day.

Anyway... It's a classic... but definitely not as good as advertised... Not because the story is not worth it but because they chose to lengthen the show for whatever reason, at the cost of a well-rounded script.

Also, a show to avoid if you're allergic to brainless female leads. At episode 40, this girl has still no agency of her own. I fail to see why both ML are obsessed with this idiot except for her looks. Just crossing my fingers she gets some brain cells before the end of the show otherwise I'm gonna scream bloody murder.

Side note: Honestly I think the ML and FL are a good couple, their personalities match, and I can't for the life of me see Jun Mi with Run Yu. She's an innocent air head, and even before hell broke loose, I already thought they weren't a good match.

BUT. Run Yu should have been the main character with Jin Mi and Xu Feng as secondary ones. He's got the most interesting arc out of all characters.

Yeah... I'm not too familiar with these actors to be honest... I just checked and the only one I already saw is Choo Young Woo in the BL "You Make Me Dance" and that was a couple of years ago... so obviously my view is also not tinted by his more recent work ^^

You know... I don't have time to read your review right now ( having wasted time reviewing another show which was in my opinion way worse than this one though in a different genre)... BUT from the first lines... I think I'm in for a good laugh, so I'm marking this page for later🤣

I personally dropped this at episode 6, only to be attacked by a fan mob in the comment section... Heavens forbid people for having different opinions...

Didn't picked it up and have no intention to watch that one again...
But I always enjoy when I get a good funny rant, so thank you in advance for your time 🤣🤣🤣

Lol I get you... Personally I don't care for star power as long as actors act well... However when you get to my age, literally everybody looks young, so unless they look REALLY old, I'm honestly incapable of knowing if these actors are in their early or late 20s.
I think it really depends on how old viewers are. Younger audience, or older people who have kids the same age probably notice it more. But for me who's got no child and who's not working around any... they just look like teens.

Seo Kang Joon wasn't supposed to be the same age as his classmates in Undercover Highschool though. From what I remember he was supposed to be slightly older, and it overall worked for me except when he was smiling. He's already lost some of the "young adult fat" he had in his face, pretty classic when you enter your 30s, so his face wasn't as youthful when he was smiling but overall I thought it worked pretty well.

I'm must more disturbed when I see twenty somethings acting like they're supposed to be in their 30s or 40s. It looks ridiculous to me.

HELLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOO WHERE IS THE POLICE?

I've seen my fair share of nonsensical Thai BLs which scripts had as many plotholes as Swiss cheese...

But I've got to say, this one is a WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE other level. There's so many plotholes in that one that I wonder if there's still any cheese left... but never fear, with each passing episode the holes keep getting bigger.

I had initially started a long rant... But then I realized, this would be better in a review once I finished the show... So I erased most of what I wrote.

For those of you who don't know "Oppai" is slang in Japanese for "Boobs". Yes. This individual (maskerading as a woman) whose nickname is "Mr. Boobs" has an avatar featuring manga drawings straight out of a hentai.
