I'm currently in shambles after today's episodes. Truly no filler episode, I was glued to my seat today. One thing I love to see in dramas is sad scenes, that is just one way I can tell if we got great actors and great writing.
Definitely, I appreciate subtlety, nuanced facial expressions, expressive eyes, all tell-tales of a good actor. But my number one thing I look for is a sad scene: when someone dies, that we should supposedly care about, I want to see that the leads care too. Not just a single tear down their face (unless it suits the character).
Today... both actors hit the nail. Chang Yu, when she saw all those people, broke my heart. She got me screaming shaking sobbing crying throwing up... I could feel how helpless she felt at the graveyard scene. I could feel how worried she was for her sister. And it is believable that she is so heartbroken, we as an audience have built a relationship with all these people too. We know all of them.
Xie Zheng also did great. He is more of a stoic character, and even though there were only a few tears, I could see how scared he was of losing Chang Yu. The scenes fit him so well, and he delivered it well.
The Li Nan massacre was horrible. Most of the villagers were massacred by that Sui Mad Prince. Qi Min is also…
She must've thought it was that guy still chasing her. I don't judge her for running away. She knows that creepy Sui prince likes her so she doesn't doubt he'd call himself her husband. For why Marquis Wu An still hiding his identity from her, I'm not so sure.

Very well said! People were complaining about how nothing is happening but they didn't realize the importance of these scenes. It may have felt slice of life for the first 15 or so episodes but we were establishing relationships. The show gave us a reason to care for them. With this scene, a lot of their arc's came full circle, just a symbol of good writing. My heart ached so much when they killed off these people. Currently balling 😭😭😭 Btw maybe a spoiler tag?

The scene with her eating the food I was waiting for him to tell her stop! But when he did, it wasn't they way I was expecting. Just as you said, he was satisfied. That really cemented that there is nothing beautiful about this couple, and any hope for it in me died there.

It's 40 episodes long... We ain't going to get into the politics right away. They gotta establish the relationships between our characters so it justifies their actions once the real plot begins. Why they fell for each other? Why they go till the ends of the earth for each other? I can understand issues with pacing if you don't enjoy slice of life stuff, but I do. I'm thoroughly enjoying the calm before the storm. And let's be honest, it's not so calm.... there's important stuff happening but you don't know the full story. But when we do know, the reveal will be so much sweeter. So just enjoy the ride.

Yes honesty is important but you're not putting yourself in these peoples shoes. Being honest is difficult considering his circumstance and her lack of courage. It's easy to say be honest but isn't actually easy to do that. He could tell her his identity, but knowing might make her hate him or put her in even more danger. We aren't in his position, we are just watching from the outside. She could confess, but she's afraid of being rejected or heartbroken considering he's leaving soon. I think the show is doing pretty well so far, the FL is more forward than most I've seen, especially in a historical cdrama. And yes, it is contrived, it's a drama... lol It's all tropes.
