Thanks - I eventually figured that out, but I don't recall watching any scene that indicated that Gramps also beat up TH's father. I FF thru too much, I guess.

TM was being groomed to eventually take over from Kang Joon-beom (2nd son) if he had become Chairman as was planned. I don't think she would have supported that if she thought that he didn't have Kang "blood".

She's worried (rightfully) about Tae Ho. She has a plan for saving Taesan group financially - and it doesn't involve Tae Ho.

I like Grandmama, but she has a steel spine when it comes to the health of Taesan Group. If Tae Ho doesn't leave Korea because of HS, Grandmama will NOT be happy.

I totally agree with your comment that viewers should study up re: that period of Korean history before brining 2023 ethics/mores into the analysis.

I don’t recall where I read this, but Grandmama is 80+ years old; Let’s say she was born in 1940 (it’s a nice round #). Thus, she was a child during the Japanese occupation and young teen during the Korean War. After the Korean War, economic development/ industrialization was emphasized by autocratic governments.

Iirc, The Taesan Group began with a textile mill. Grandmama is an expert seamstress. 2+2 = 4. I’m pretty sure that Grandmama was the force behind Taesan’s rise during Korea’s great industrialization phase in the 1960’s. Furthermore, according to TM’s mother, Grandmama “controlled the great Taesan” before she disappeared. She was greatly admired and respected by the Board of Directors and employees.
You are correct about how Korean society was structured back then, but I don’t think Grandmama was sitting at home “Washing Ironing Feeding and Entertain[ing]”. She was the brains – and the strategic thinker - behind TaeSan Group meteoric rise. Her husband had a volatile temper and cheated on her – nevertheless, she was friends with his concubine.
We know that dear old Gramps beat Kang Jin Bun (eldest son) with a golf club but I don’t recall a similar story regarding TH’s dad who was clearly as autocratic as his father. If I missed that scene (and I missed plenty), I would like to watch if someone can point it out. Jin Bun says that his mother “never liked him, but he never knew why.” There’s more to the 1st and 2nd gen relationships than we know at this point.

By the way, the casting for Gramps, TH father (and mother?) was announced before the drama began. At some point, we are going to see a lot of flashbacks to the time when all three died. It’s one of the few plot reveals that I’m looking forward to watching.

Subs were late today, so I've only watched the early raw version but the Hyo Jun and Mi Ram scene is the only one I'm really looking forward to re-watching. At this point, Hyo Shim's mother is Villainess #1 - she's worse than the other one.

Observations:
Tae Hee is the only one trying to live her own life.
Interesting that Hwang No Sik (Fitness client Grandfather) is intersecting with so many characters in Hyo Shim's life - her eldest brother, child singer Ga-on. I don't think he's there just for comic relief.
There is more to Yeom Jin Soo (The Henchman) than we know.

A couple of days ago, actor Lee Kwang Gi (Evil Henchman Yeom Jin Soo) posted a photo with Uee on a outdoor location shoot.

The scenes usually appear four (4) weeks after Kwang-gi posts a photo from LYOL. Just because they took a photo together, doesn’t mean they filmed a dialogue scene together.

When I watched her in "love in Contract" I thought she was already incredibly SKINNY - and yes, I use the word "skinny" instead of "slender".

She dieted down to 87 lbs??? Eight-Seven Pounds! She's 5'3 inches.

Do you remember when that scene may have occurred? I was on vacation for several weeks and crashed through many episodes (heavy FF) and know that I missed a lot of small moments.

Tae Min sleeps nekkid. He oozes sex in those custom tailored suits (actor lost 20 pounds to be "suit-worthy").

at some point, if Namu Wiki is correct, Ga-on appears on TV and there is only ONE TV channel that matters on this drama, so possible connection to Sook Yung would be entertaining (and perhaps even heart-warming?).

Earlier chaebol generations didn't marry for love - they had a country to re-build after the Korean War and in true Confucian style (loyalty to family). marriages were based on convenience more than love. I'm pretty sure Grandmama was the original brains (perhaps even foundation) behind TaeSan Group's growth. Grandpapa appears to be one stinking f**kboi.

When all is said and done - I adored that scene between TM and Ga-on.

I've edited my original post thanks to @kalenahenden info re: TenPro. It is a high-class (top 10%) "brothel" system in Korea so not likely associated with older brother or Tae Min, for that matter. Thus, the mystery is probably more about her mother than her father. I guess I was reading too much into that truly lovely scene with TM and Ga-on - he was so sweet with her.

Thanks for the education! Since Tai Min could have just about any "elite" woman he wanted in Korea, he doesn't seem the type. However, it was 10 years ago so who knows.

Grandfather had his personal concubine (Madame Seo), so less likely.

I was so confused by the Namu Wiki notes that I reverted back to Hangul and then put the text through Bing translator. The note regarding "not related to blood" is - for some odd reason - connected to Park Woo Joo but it is clearly directed towards Grandmother Choi (on the rooftop). I'm going to edit my original post.

Perhaps Ga-on is Woo Joo's grand-daughter and perhaps Hannah Young (Yeong Han-ah?) is Woo Joo's daughter. Perhaps, lol.

I just now returned to this post (must have missed your earlier reply) because I was copying/pasting for a different forum where the discussion involved Ji Chang Wook's upcoming drama. Thanks for taking the time to respond - and is such a cordial manner. 😊

I had a completely different take - he was telling TM that his loyalty was to TM and TM's mother - to ensure that TM will eventually become the Chairman. Jin-so's future is dependent upon Tae Min (and TM's mother) and definitely NOT with Tae Ho. I didn't see fatherly love in that conversation - I saw scheming and clinging to power.

I hope this comes to a streaming platform w/in a couple of months of release. After a non-stop year of Yoo In Soo ("Alchemy of Souls, Part 2", "The Good/Bad Mother", Uncanny Counter 2 and "Daily Dose of Sunshine") I still love to watch this unique actor.

According to Namu Wiki (and I have ZERO idea if it is accurate), Park Woo Joo (golf instructor) is not actually related by blood to his young elementary school daughter, Ga-on. "Later, the mystery of birth will unfold." [I will note that the translation is confusing - perhaps he is her father; perhaps her grandfather; perhaps no relation at all, but the secret of her mother is clearly destined to be told]. EDIT: I located the original Hangul text and ran it through Bing translator. The part about "not related by blood" refers to Grandmother Choi - but for some reason, the note was under Park Woo Joo's character. Nevertheless, Ga-on's birth continues to be a "mystery"

"Hannah Young" is Gaon's biological mother. She used to be the most successful woman in Tenpro {I have no idea what "Tenpro" might be) but now she is in decline (?), and while working in a provincial town, she sees Gaon on television and comes to her." EDIT: thanks to poster @kalenahenden who knew about "Tenpro":“Ten Pro” are exclusive adult establishments that are infamous in Korea for catering to only the richest in Korean society. The name “Tenpro,” which literally means 10% in Korea, was given to these establishments because it is said only the most beautiful 10% of women can work there. "

So, eventually Ga-on will be on TV - not a surprise since the young actress (Kim Yu Ha) is quite the phenom. According to MDL, "In 2022, she appeared on "King of Mask Singer" and narrowly lost in the final round but managed to gain more fans." And, if Namu Wiki is correct, her mother will eventually appear on the scene.

Knowing all of this (that her parentage may be unknown), I was truly taken aback by Ga On's scene with Tae Min (Episode 16). Every character has a purpose for being in the drama and one way or another, Ga On's story will connect with one or more other characters because "cute child singer" isn't enough to include her in this drama. There was immediate connection and admiration between the two of them. And Tae Min's Grandmama adores her as well.

So that's my wild guess/theory - Ga On is Tae Min's unknown love child . EDIT: If Ga-on's mother was a high class prostitute, the universe of potential fathers increases dramatically. LOL

I guess at least one birth secret is almost required in a weekender.

However, that one scene in Ep. 17 isn't enough to counter the following: (i) Grandmother loves Tae Min and Tae Ho equally (according to Tae Ho); (ii) Kang Joon-beom (Tae Ho's father) was clearly grooming Tae Min to be the next generation successor while allowing his own son to pursue his frivolous (anthropology) degree in the US; and (iii) TM's mother seduced his father when he was sent to the textile mill (the foundation of TaeSan Group). Also, Yeom Jin Soo clearly hates both Mom and Pops.

So, possible? Yes - but unlikely. So, for now I say "red herring." (Lol, you asked what we thought!!)

I do have a candidate for birth secret however - I'll post separately.

lol, I'm watch on Kocowa and usually watch the raw version first thing in the morning and then if I have time, immediately watch the sub version, which appears about 30-45 minutes after the raw version appears. I could just wait that 1/2 hour for the sub version, but I really enjoy watching it raw and trying to understand some of it.

Unfortunately, once I begin to watch the sub version, the raw version disappears and I can't compare. I think perhaps next time I will try
to watch one on tv and the other on my laptop at the same time so I can stop/pause/learn.
